Icing on the Cake
Chapter Ninety-One

“Oh crap!” I exclaimed as I shot up in bed after looking at my phone.
“What?” Calum asked tiredly, as I woke him up.
“Jenny’s coming today!” I said. Jenny, our social worker. “She just sent me an email. She’ll be here sometime this afternoon to do a checkup visit.”
“Okay, what’s the big deal?” Calum asked. “I think we’re transitioning pretty well.”
“Look at our house!” I said. “It’s a mess!”
“Of course it’s in clutter.” Calum said. “We have two new kids, it’s going to be messy. And it’s not like we’ve had time to clean.”
“We can’t let her think we’re hoarders!” I said. “We need to get organizing now!”
We woke up Julia and the twins. After breakfast we asked Julia to take the twins and keep them occupied in the playroom, and also to try and organize it a little.
Calum and I went downstairs and tried to organize every room vigorously.
“What time is Jenny going to be here?” Calum asked.
“She didn’t say exactly when.” I answered. “She just said that she would be here sometime this afternoon. She said it would just be observing and a few questions for us. She said it shouldn’t disrupt the day too much.”
“Then why are you freaking out about this?” Calum said. He then came over, stopped me from sputter-cleaning, and put me in his arms for a hug.
“Everything’s going to be okay.” He said.
“You know I always believe you when you say it.” I said back, finally starting to calm down a little.
My heart, Oof.
