Icing on the Cake
Chapter Eighty-Two
~82~
Everyone slowly filed out of the church. Calum told me that showing Brett’s ID was proof that he lied, so it made her believe what I had heard; he was a gold digger.
“I don’t know where Mali is.” Calum said to me. Most people had left the church by then, and we were still there around seven p.m. “It’s been three hours since she ran out. She’s not answering her phone.”
“She took her car.” I said. “She probably just went home and turned off her phone so nobody could call her or message her with questions.”
“You’re probably right.” Calum said. “But I’m still a little nervous.”
“We’re all dressed up. Let’s go out.” I suggested. “Let’s have an impromptu date night.”
“Not your worst idea.” Calum said with a smile.
Calum and I went to a nice restaurant and had dinner. It was very warm for September, and even though it was evening when we got home, it was warm enough for Calum and I to decide to go swimming.
“We should teach the twins to swim.” I said to Calum. “I mean, in a few months once it’s summer and it’s warmer.”
“Luke, you barely know how to swim.” Calum said. “And that’s still even after all the times I’ve tried to teach you.”
“You’re a good teacher.” I said. “But maybe I was distracted by the hot lifeguard.” I realized what I said made no sense. "That was you, just to clarify."
Calum laughed at my awkwardness.
After swimming, we kissed the twins goodnight, showered, and went to bed. We were exhausted, physically and emotioannly.
It had been a hell of a day.
The next morning, there was a knock on the door. I opened it to see Mali.
My heart, Oof.
