Icing on the Cake
Chapter Eighty
~80~
It was the day of Mali’s wedding. We had to prove to her that Brock, Brett, whatever, was a fraud. (And if you’re going to have a fake name, why start with a name with the same first two letters? I mean, come on.)
I had a plan to prove that he had ulterior motives.
The wedding started in an hour, and Calum and I were already at the church, all dressed up in nice outfits. I didn’t immediately tell Calum about my plan, because I didn’t want him to be worried, or, to be honest, try to stop me.
I walked in a Sunday School room behind the sanctuary. That’s where Brock was hanging out with his best man and groomsmen. Calum was in there.
With a water bottle in my hand, I came in congratulating Brock. He looked at me vindictively. I think he remembered what he did to me in high school.
“Gotta say, man,” I said, acting all straight and putting my hand on his shoulder, taking a sip of water, then fake chocking/swallowing wrong all over his shirt.
“Bro what the fuck!” He screamed.
“Oh my God I’m so sorry!” I said, sort of fake. “Don’t worry, Calum and I came prepared, we have another shirt in your size, same color in our car. Come out to change.
Brock huffed. “Fine.” He said, taking off his sport coat and walking out with the others.
This happened exactly how I wanted it to. I went into the pocket of his sport coat and found his wallet. I dove into it, and found his drivers license. Just as I suspected. His name isn’t Brock. It is Brett Williams.
I rushed to Calum and took him to a private area of the church. The wedding had just started, but I needed to talk to him.
“Calum.” I said. “Look at this driver’s license. I stole it form Brock’s wallet before placing his wallet back in his sport coat. What do you see?”
“New South Wales driver’s license.” Calum said. “Oh my God. His name is Brett Williams. Luke, you were right!”
"This at least proves he's a liar." I pointed out. "Think it will be enough proof for Mali?"
“We have to try.” Calum said.
Calum and I stormed in the sanctuary.
“STOP THE WEDDING!” Calum yelled. Everything went silent and everyone in the church and started at us. Luke and I looked at each other with panicked faces. Mali looked heartbroken, crushed and angry.
I could tell that Calum knew he just ruined what was supposed to be the best day of his sister's life for her.
My heart, Oof.
