Icing on the Cake

Chapter Thirty

~30~

The video Calum and I made had umpteen million views by the time we got to school the next day.

The principal called for an assembly right away in the morning. I found Calum once we got to the gym and we stood next to each other. We knew what this would be about. I was freaking out. Although he was staying calm on the outside, I knew he was nervous too.

The principal stood at the podium. When he started speaking in his yelling but not yelling voice, I thought that my heart was going to stop.

Calum whispered in my ear, “That’s how he wants you to feel, Luke.” He was right, so I tried to calm down.

“Due to recent events,” Mr. Strands started, “Surrounding the controversy of allowing to students of the same gender to be banned from prom, the school has, in light of the inappropriate and absurd reaction by the public, revised its plan for prom.”

I got excited and hopeful, but tried not to be too hopeful. I grabbed Calum’s hand and squeezed it tight.

“The school has decided to not allow any couples to go to prom, nor any couple’s tickets. Only single tickets, at a price of $7 per piece, will be issued. Those that already have couple tickets may turn it in for a refund or two tickets for four extra dollars. Grand march will still go on, and any two people who wish to walk together may. Prom will begin afterwards as usual.”

People started cheering. Calum and I shot up and hugged. People cheered harder when we did that. It felt weird to be in this kind of center of attention.

All day, walking down the halls felt like I was taking victory laps. We walked around school with his arm around me. I jumped on his back and he gave me a piggy-back. I won. We won. We were going to prom together. We were walking Grand March together.

After school, Calum and I decided to go tux rental shopping. I glanced at my phone while we were shopping.

“I’m surprised your parents are still paying your phone bill.” Calum said.

“Calum,” I said, ignoring the comment even though it was a valid statement. “Our channel, 5 Seconds of Summer, has over jumped from a hundred subscribers to over 10,000!”

Notes

Yeah remember when I said that after only four more chapters (from this one) we would flash five years forward?
You see where I'm going with this?
(Hint, hint, it's 2012 when this chapter takes place)
