Icing on the Cake

“Where’s my husband?” Calum asked as I returned into the reception dance room.

It was getting to the point in the evening where some of the older people were starting to leave and the younger people were starting to really turn up. The DJ was getting more lit and the lights were getting lower.

This is where the wedding dances get really fun.

By this point, I had only nursed three drinks over the four and a half hours, so I was completely sober. I found Calum and he handed me an oversized shot of tequila. He had one himself, and we clinked them before letting the smooth alcohol slide down our throats.

Feeling a small tingle hit my brain immediately, I decided we should make sure that the twins get back to the hotel room and sleep before I drink any more. Julia had been dancing for a bit, but she hadn’t been drinking much and she volunteered to take the kids to bed around this time.

“Have you see Adam?” Julia asked Calum and I.

“My cousin’s daughter Emma is watching him.” I answered.

Emma, who is only about thirteen, ran in really scared. She looked like she was about to cry.

“I can’t find Adam!” Emma screeched.

A part of me wanted to freak out, but rationally, I stayed calm. I knew he had to be here somewhere.

“There he is!” Calum said, pointing to the door that lead outside.

We ran the hundred feet or so to the door to follow Adam, but he had managed to make it outside well before us. As we darted outside, I saw that Adam was standing in the street.

“ADAM!” Calum and I yelled as we both ran towards the street.

Before we could get to the street, we heard the aggressive screeches of tires on pavement. Headlights came out of nowhere, and before we could react, a small black sedan blasted down the street, running over Adam.
