Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred and Ninety-Eight
~198~
I was walking down the hall outside the reception area to go use the restroom when I ran into one of my younger cousins. His name is Ryan and he is probably around sixteen.
Whilst I didn’t know him that well and we have had a total of three conversations in our lifetimes, I still felt like I should talk to all my family that came to my wedding.
“Hey, how’s it going?” I asked.
“Pretty good,” He shyly answered back, not really knowing what to say. “Congratulations.”
“Thank you! I’m glad you could make it.” I responded.
Ryan sheepishly looked down one end of the hall and the other. There was no one around.
“I’m really glad I could make it too.” He said quietly. “I’m glad I could come to a…gay, wedding,” He said as if gay was a dirty word or something that was uncomfortable for him to say. “I think I’m gay.”
“Oh, that’s cool.” I said, not knowing what to say.
“Don’t tell anyone. No one knows.”
“Just between you and me.” I assured. “Promise.”
“Thank you.”
Ryan then quickly walked away.
I could see the confusion, pain, and struggle in his eyes that I knew all too well. And as bad as I felt for him, I couldn’t help but smile knowing that he trusted me enough to be the first person to ever tell.
And that my wedding gave him the confidence to do so.
