Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred and Sixty-Three
~163~
Calum, Julia and I all looked at each other in befuddlement. We weren’t thinking they would ask that question this early.
But…we did just announce that they are about to have a new sibling.
We did what I fell like a lot of new parents do when their little kids ask that question: distract them so they forget their desire to know the answer.
It’s a hard question to answer. Neither Calum nor I wanted to open up the children’s picture book “Where Did I Come From?” that taught both of us as children.
Basically, we don't want to do that because we are a unique situation. We aren’t your stereotypical man and woman family. We have three parents and the way that we have babies, all three of us together, is not how it’s explained in that weird children’s book.
In the middle of trying to distract the twins from their question, the doorbell rang.
“Saved by the bell.” Calum said awkwardly as he got up to leave the situation.
A minute later, he called my name telling me to come downstairs. Once I got down, I saw a police officer at the doorway.
“Luke Hemmings?” One of them said, roughly.
“Yes?” I answered back nervously.
“You’ve been served.” The same one said while handing me an envelope. They then briskly walked away.
I opened the enveloped and looked at the paper inside.
“What is it?” Calum asked.
“The court is summonsing me to testify about the shooting.” I said. “Oh fuck!”
“What’s wrong?”
“They want me to come in and testify on the twins’ birthday.”
