Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred and Forty-Seven
~147~
We met a couple people, and they told us their stories. Some of them made me cry. Some of them brought joy to my heart.
One girl told us that she was born a boy, and that her whole life she wanted to play with girl’s toys, but her parents wouldn’t let her. She wanted to wear girl’s clothes, but her parents wouldn’t let her.
She then went on to tell us that her parents split when she was sixteen, and she moved in with her mom. Her mom was more accepting of her, and let her transition.
Even though she was happy that she could transition, not everything was easy after that. Her high school doesn’t let her use the girl’s bathrooms or locker rooms, and it’s very difficult, emotionally, spiritually, and physically, to go into a boy’s locker room.
Her father also completely disowned her. She was really close to a lot of her extended family on her dad’s side, a lot of her cousins, but they all disowned her after she started transitioning.
Things have been hard for her, but she told us that her mom has been very supportive. She told us she was about to graduate high school soon, so she wouldn’t have to deal with this high school crap much longer.
What was amazing…unbelievable, humbling, is that she told us that we…Calum and I…were brave for what we did and what we’re doing.
I told her that she was brave for what she’s doing. I wished her all the luck in the world. Her story was so inspiring and it made me feel like I was doing the right thing. It made me feel energized to show pride.
Not only is it important that we get Parliament to give us marriage equality, but it occurred to me that we need complete and fully inclusive discrimination protection for all LGBT Australians.
What I…she…all of us here have gone through isn’t okay.
And I’m ready to do something about it.
