Icing on the Cake

Calum and I sat in our car outside the restaurant, waiting for my brothers to show up. They drove up and parked next to us. We all got out of our cars and exchanged greetings.

I hugged both my brothers, and they gave a disapproving glance at Calum, surprised that I would bring him with.

We sat down at the restaurant and had many awkward silences. We were at one of those sports restaurants that have TVs everywhere that play sports and have waitresses that wear sports jerseys.

“How’s Mom doing?” I asked.

“Well, if you came to visit her, you would know.” Jack said.

“You know that she doesn’t want me there.” I said. “All she wanted was my credit card. And she got it.”

“By the way, is that depleting you guys? Paying for it?” Jack asked.

“It’s fine. It’s not overwhelming for us.” I clarified.

“I know that you two don’t really have more income coming in.”

“We have an investments lawyer and we’re doing a lot of investments, so we’re getting investment income.”

There was a silence. Calum was looking up at a TV. “Dammit, the Sharks are loosing the game.”

“Seriously?” Ben snarled, looking back at the TVs. “Who are they playing?”

“The Roosters.” Calum said.

“God I hate them!” Ben said. “What did you think of last night’s game?”

“I was so pissed!” Calum said. “They could’ve made the score but he went to the left and that was so stupid!”

“We need more beer to talk about this.” Ben said.

“Pound it!” Calum said while putting up his fist.

Jack and I looked at them, shocked, and then looked at each other and awkwardly laughed. Were Calum and Ben…sports friends?
