Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred Twelve

I scoffed at my phone.
“What’s wrong?” Calum asked.
“Ever notice that ever hiccup in our lives recently seem to always start with us looking at our phones?” I asked.
“Want to throw them away?” Calum asked sarcastically.
“Kind of.” I said, and then didn’t say anything.
“Luke, what’s up?”
“My brothers want to have lunch with me to, as they say, catch up.”
“And that’s bad?” Calum asked. “I thought you were on good terms with your brothers.”
“I am, sort of.” I said. “They say they don’t completely ‘get’ my lifestyle, as they worded it. They don’t get how a man could marry another man. They don’t get how you and I are raising children with Julia. They don’t get how a three person parenting team works.”
“Look at the kind of upbringing you guys had, though.” Calum pointed out.
“No, I know.” I clarified. “And I’m happy that they’re trying to understand and trying to be supportive, it’s just awkward sometimes.”
“Are you going to have lunch with them?”
“Yeah, of course I am.” I admitted. “They’re my brothers, I love them. And I love that they don’t think I’m some freak.”
“Well…” Calum said.
“You’re right.” I said. “They probably do. But they mostly keep it to themselves.”
“Want me to come with you?” Calum asked. “I haven’t really spent much time with them at all.”
“Yeah, that’d be great!” I said, even though I feared his presence would add to the awkwardness.
