Treacherous

Chapter 4

Niall's P.O.V

"You know it's all right, it's O.K. I'll live to see another day.
We can try to understand
The New York Times' effect on man.
Whether you're a brother
Or whether you're a mother,
You're stayin' alive, stayin' alive."

Olive sang at the top of her longs while I drove us home from the hospital. It took every ounce of my control not to turn the damn radio off. Don't get me wrong it was a great song, I have nothing against the Bee Gees. My problem was that this girl sitting next to me in the small confines of my car was completely and horrifically tone deaf. No joke, it sounded like they were torturing animals in the back seat.

No matter how many times I've told her in the past, she either choses to not believe me, or likes to burn my ear drums.

It was finally Friday, three weeks had passed since our first day volunteering at the hospital. We've been going once or twice a week since. Olive had taken a specific liking to the little girl Marley, she was freaking adorable so I don't blame her. What seemed to shock us all was how easily she was able to get Noah Allen to open up to her. I had been to the hospital a fair share of times before we started volunteering, and not once had I seen him talk. Not until the day I walked in on him and Olive in the art room. To say I was shocked was an understatement. Theres just something about that girl that seems to draw people in.

I would know. She's my best friends sister and I know it's wrong, and I know Liam would kick my ass if he knew, but I can't help it. I want her.

I haven't tried anything with her since that day in the foyer. Unless you count my teasing and suggestive flirting as trying something.
I knew that she felt horrible about 'cheating' on fucking Elliot.

God I hate that guy.

Finally I pulled on to their street, my poor ears were practically bleeding.

However the possibility of going deaf, was lost on my mind when I noticed the familiar red sports car parked in the driveway.

Olive must have noticed as well because she abruptly stopped her sad excuse for singing, and lowered the volume dial. She turned to me with the brightest smile on her face.

"Their home!" She practically cried in joy and hopped out of the car before I could even put it in park. I was quick to follow her, not sure how well this was going to play out. If last time was anything to go by this wouldn't go too great.

She fiddled with the front door, and threw it open before running towards the living room. Sure enough Mr. and Mrs. Payne were relaxing on the couch across from a more than pissed off Liam.
"Daddy!" Olive called and tackled the man in a hug. He chuckled and stood up, lifting her off the ground slightly.

"How are you pumpkin?"

"I'm good. I missed you so much."

"We missed you too." He placed her down and she was quick to hug her mother. I knew they didn't have the best relationship but nothing stopped Olive from trying to impress her. I could just tell from the way she tried to fix her hair and clothing, after they pulled apart, so her mom wouldn't eye her disapprovingly.

"Niall boy, how's soccer going?" Phillip, or Mr. Payne, held his hand out to me, and I gave him a firm shake. I may not particularly care for him and his wife, but they allow me to stay here and have done a lot for me. So for that I'm grateful.
"Good. Liam and I are kicking ass."

"Wouldn't expect any less. You two have to start looking into colleges soon."

"Already on it sir. A UCLA scout's coming to check us out in the next game." I told him and his eyebrows shot up looking to his son expectantly, wondering why he hadn't heard.

"You didn't tell me this Liam."

"You haven't called in a month." He snapped.

"Liam." Olive scolded him. I knew what she was thinking, she didn't want a repeat of last time when Liam and their dad got in a full blown yelling match. Where as Olive likes to make the most of the moments with her parents, constantly trying to impress them, Liam can't stand them. I know he loves them and is grateful for all that they give him, he's just resentful for the lack of parenting they've showed. Other than adding insane amounts to their bank accounts each month, the Payne parents aren't exactly around. Liam probably wouldn't care if it were just him. But the kid is insanely protective of his twin sister. He hates how much pain they put her through. I know how much it pisses him off to see her strive for the attention she'll never receive from them.

"What Livy?" Liam glared at her. "Your going to pretend that they weren't absent the last four months, calling in maybe three times at most. Or what about how you cried your eyes out the last time they abruptly left."

"Their here now. That's all that matters." Her eyes pleaded with him.

"You think they're here for long." He laughed. "Go ahead tell her." Liam looked at his father now.

"Tell her when your leaving."

"Tomorrow morning. I needed to grab some documents from my office so we're taking an early flight back to London." Phillip sighed looking at his daughter, I could see guilt in his face. They love their kids but to them work comes first, or in Mrs. Payne's case, her husband and traveling comes first.

"Oh." Olive muttered, her face falling as she looked down to the ground. I had the urge to wrap my arms around her. What the hell was she doing to me?

"Olivia sweet heart, don't be upset." Miranda Payne stood up from the couch and attempted to comfort her daughter, one that she hadn't seen in four months and was acting like they're together every day. "We'll be home for thanksgiving, just a month and a half away. Then we have our holiday! You kids are going to be so surprised when you see where your father picked for this year. "

"It's a beautiful country." Phillip had a proud smile. "Of course Niall and Ronnie are coming along."

"Right, so Livy and I have people to entertain us and you and mom can go off on your own." Liam
rolled his eyes.

"Liam James Payne." His mother snapped. "You know that is not true. Apologize to your father."

"Sorry." Liam gumbled.

"Good. Now all of you go get ready. We're going to dinner." I internally groaned at the thought of dressing up, but knew better than to let it show. The least I could do was go to dinner with them for all they've done for me. "Olivia dear, wear the dress I left on your bed. I have a big surprise for you tonight."

"You didn't." Mr. Payne complained.

"Of course I did. Don't be a child Phillip." She glared at him. "Everyone shoo shoo. Get ready, reservations at 6:30."

We all dragged ourselves to our rooms. I threw on black slacks and a light blue button down. I looked presentable enough so I went to Liam's room, knowing he wouldn't be handling this well.

I wasn't surprised to find him sprawled on his bed in his boxers with a bottle of jack in his hands. There wasn't too much missing so he must have only taken a few swigs. I was thankful I wasn't going to have an angry drunk Liam to deal with around the two people who were the cause of it.
I took a seat next to him, resting my back on the headboard. I grabbed the bottle from him and took my own sip.

"I'm not fucking going." He muttered.

"Okay."

"I'm serious. I had plans. They can't just show up and expect us to drop everything for them. It's bullshit."

"Your right." I agreed. "I don't want to go." He sighed. "But.. I don't... I don't know when I'll see them again. They say they'll be home for thanksgiving but I'm not counting on anything. Not anymore." His voice cracked slightly. I've seen Liam vulnerable before, I'm pretty sure Olive and I are the only ones who have. It usually had to do with the topic of his parents. "Sorry man, I know it's wrong of me to complain to you with everything that's going on with your family." I'd take absentee parents over my fucked up ones any day, but I wasn't going to tell him that. He didn't need to feel bad about venting to me. That's what best friends are for. I've definitely ranted to him plenty of times.

"Don't worry about it." I took another swig and handed it back to him. He placed it on his night stand and walked to his closet. Five minutes later he came out in a similar outfit to mine.

"Can't let you and Livy deal on your own. Besides Im worried about what the fuck my mother could be surprising my sister with."

"Who fucking knows." I laughed. We went down to wait in the den. Phillip joined us and asked a few more questions about our team and UCLA. Liam was civil enough and answered each question. He wouldn't admit it but he enjoyed the hint of attention.

"Oh my Olivia!" Miranda gasped walking into the room. That made the three of us turn our heads to the stairs. "You look so beautiful!"

My jaw dropped, and I think my heart stopped. "Holyshit." I breathed low enough so no one heard.
My eyes raked down her body, devouring her. What was with her in the color red?

"Isn't it too much mom?" She asked nervously smoothing out the material.

"Yes!" Liam and Phillip said at the same time. They had identical faces on of bewilderment and anger.

"Of course not!" Miranda glared at her son and husband and approached Olive. She fixed fly aways in her hair and straightened out her cleavage. Which my eyes seemed to linger on. I had to adjust my pants if you know what I mean. "Alright let's get a move on. We'll need two cars so Liam you drive and your father and I will meet you there."

Liam grumbled something I couldn't make out and stomped out the door.

"She's not wearing this Miranda. Not in front of him." Phillip snarled. Who me? Fuck did he see my boner?

"She looks lovely. Now get in the car before I drag you there." She glared before clicking her heels out the door. Phillip sighed and followed his wife like a puppy dog. Whipped.

"You look beautiful." I told Olive. What I really wanted to say was sexy, hot, fucking smoking.. I just didn't feel like getting slapped.

"Shut up." She blushed and attempted to cover more of her cleavage that her mother exposed. "I can't believe she's making me wear this. What the hell is the point?"
I approached her and lightly ran my hand down the curve of her hips. The other went to the small of her back, pulling her against me. Her eyes were wide in surprise, but I recognized that look of lust that she tried so well to hide from me.

"I can name plenty." I whispered huskily. God, every guy in that damn restaurant was going to be looking at her. I was surprised at how jealous and angry that thought made me.

She rolled her eyes, trying to cover her blush. "Let's go before my brother leaves us."
I smirked and let her walk ahead of me, getting a nice view of her backside on the way out.

….

We arrived at the restaurant, where Miranda and Phillip were already waiting by the host.

"Oh kids your here!" Miranda gushed running over to re-fix Olives cleavage. I glared at her slightly, not that I wasn't enjoying the view, but I knew Olive was uncomfortable, plus I didn't like the hungry eyes of other men.

"Come on, the tables waiting for us." Phillip sighed, I couldn't understand his annoyed expression. Miranda on the other hand was grinning like the cheshire cat.

"Your going to be so excited Olivia!" She squealed and pulled her daughter along with her. Liam and I exchanged confused glances and followed along.

We walked through the restaurant and I glared at the men who were looking at Olive. That was until our table came into view.

Of flipping course.

"No. No fucking way." Liam snapped.

"Elliot?!" Olive gasped. She looked to her mother once before charging at the asshole in the room. He smiled that fake ass smile and lifted her in his arms. I almost threw up in my mouth as he literally ate her face off in what he thought was a kiss. How could she even stomach that?
Phillip, Liam and I were all glaring death at him. He finally let her go when Phillip loudly cleared his
throat.

"When did you get here?" Olive asked him as we all sat down.

"A few hours ago." He answered , throwing his arm around the back of her chair. "Your mother called and I couldn't say no to a chance of seeing my girl."

Miranda audibly sighed and I could see Olive melting at his words. It made me sick. I made sure to sit directly across from him so I could scowl the whole time.

"How long are you here for Elliot?" Phillip asked through gritted teeth.

"Just the weekend sir. Gotta get back for class Monday."

"I see." Phillip nodded. "And I presume you'll be sleeping at your own house. Correct?"

"Yes sir. My parent's would appreciate me spending some time with them as well." He told him, I could tell it was a lie. He would be over the second Mr. and Mrs. Payne left. The kid is so obsessive of Olive, it's creepy. I was surprised when he went so far away for college. It was one of the happiest days of my life. The past few weeks have been amazing without his irritating presence lurking around, or standing in my way.

"Well good then. Tell them we say hello." Whether Phillip saw through the lie, I couldn't tell, but he decided to let it go. It's not like he could do much from half way across the world.
Dinner continued this way. Elliot bragged about his college experience, as if we gave a shit. We all know he's going into law, I've heard the same boring bullshit about eighty times. I personally give my condolences to whoever hires him as their lawyer.

Apparently he joined some frat, probably filled with other stock up cock suckers like him. He's in the process of rushing and was milking some tiny ass scar from where one of the brothers punched him. Of course Olive fell for it and was pouting as she kissed it better.

She looked at him as if he put the stars in the sky. I couldn't explain the gut twisting feeling I got
from that. Why couldn't she see through his bullshit? She's the smartest and most sensible girl I know, except when it comes to him. I hated everything about him. The way he bragged about everything, the way he talked to Olivia like she were an idiot who needed his guidance to survive, the way he dressed like a preppy try hard, the way he fake smiled or laughed, and the way he had my Olive feeding out of the palm of his hand.

Finally dinner ended and Elliot insisted on driving Olive home, much to mine and Liam's protest. She doesn't like getting in the car with him, he's one of those reckless drivers and it freaks her out. Though she would never refuse him, so I had to watch her terrified expression as she slid into his passenger seat. The prick didn't even hold the door for her.

"I hate that guy." Liam glared as we watched him speed out of the parking lot. I couldn't imagine how scared Olive was. The insensitive asshole knew about her trauma but clearly enjoyed freaking her out.

"Hate doesn't cut it."

"Seriously dude, can we just get rid of him?" Liam groaned as we hopped into the car.

"Oh believe me. I plan to."

….

When we arrived home, Olive still wasn't here yet. Miranda and Phillip said goodnight and went up to bed, wanting some sleep before their early flight.

"Wanna play some x-box?" I asked Liam, taking off the button up so I was in only my under shirt.

"I can't. I'm heading out."

"Where to?" I raised an eyebrow suspiciously.

"Well I had plans tonight before my parents rudely changed them."

"Plans?" Normally if Liam were meeting with a girl he would come right out and tell me but he seemed to be avoiding something.

"Yeah plans." He shrugged and walked up to his room. I followed and laid back on his bed.

"Come on, where are you going?"

"I'm meeting up with someone." He said as he took his slacks off and pulled on jeans.

"A chick? Or is it a dude and that's why your not telling me?" I joked.

"God, it's a female. Would you shut up." His face turned bright red and I smirked.

"You meet with girls all the time. Why would I care?"

"She's not just any girl. I was supposed to take her on a date tonight but I had to cancel."

"Date?" My eyes widened in shock. Liam wasn't normally the type of guy to date. To be honest none of my friends were except for Louis. We were all pretty shocked when he told us he got a girlfriend.

"Yes a date. I like her, she's cool and different. I'm going to pick her up, I feel bad that I had to cancel." He shrugged. Now that made more sense, he was going to get some.

"Nice. Get laid without having to buy her dinner." I smirked.

"Shut the fuck up dude." Liam growled and chucked his shoe at me. "It's not like that."

"First of all ouch." I rubbed my shoulder where the shoe jabbed me. "Second of all, who are you and what have you done to my best friend?"

"Would you relax, it was just one date. No I wasn't planing on sleeping with her, I already tried and she completely shot me down. I guess I just wanted to hang out with her. We're going for ice-cream."

"Ah I see. So she rejected you and now your intrigued." Another thing that rarely happened, we didn't get rejected by girls. So I could relate to Liam with the Olive situation. Though I couldn't tell him that since it involved his freaking sister. Wow I was a shitty friend.

"Sure." He rolled his eyes and grabbed his keys. "Text me wen Livy gets home." He told me walking out of the room. I mumbled a reply and looked up at the ceiling. I thought about Olive and the confusing way she made me feel. Then Liam's face came in my mind and I felt like shit for having those thoughts about his sister. I mean she was practically a sister to me. She was the little girl who I used to have a ball messing with when we were growing up. I used to put bugs in her food, pull her hair or burn her barbie dolls. I smiled at the memories, I was horrible to her, her personal tormentor, no wonder she hates me so much. I doubt I'll ever be forgiven for giving her American Girl dolls matching boy hair cuts. She cried for days until her dad mailed home new ones, which two weeks later I threw in the pool. How was I supposed to know they couldn't get wet? I just wanted to go for a swim with them. Why make the things bathing suits if they can't go in
the pool?

I was pulled out of my flashback when the front door opened. I shot out of Liam's bed and raced down the stairs to find Olive with black mascara lines running down her cheeks. The sight pulled at my heart but at the same time I felt a rush of joy… maybe the asshole fucked up so bad that she broke up with him. I admit that was a bit selfish on my part, but anything to get rid of fucking Elliot.

"Olive? What happened?" I cooed in a soft voice.

"Nothing." She whimpered and looked up at me with big sad eyes.

"Come here." I mumbled and pulled her into my arms. To my satisfaction she didn't pull away,
instead she wrapped her arms around me and cried harder.

"What the fuck did he do to you?" I growled.

"It was my fault." She spoke softly, letting me know she didn't really believe that.

"I doubt that. What did he do?"

"Where's my parents? And Liam?"

"Your parents went to bed and Liams on a date."

"Date?" She had a smilier reaction to me. I would have laughed if we were in a different situation.

"Not the point. Stop changing the subject. What. Did. He. Do?"

"He just.. he wanted to.. you know… in the car." I couldn't see her face since it was burried in my chest but I could picture her blush.

"And you didn't want to? God did he force you Olivia?" I was seeing red. If that fucker touched her against her will I would personally beat the living shit out of him.

"No.. well, we didn't do anything. I made him drive me home."

"So he tried." I sneered and she nodded, looking up at me with teary eyes.

"He pulled into a parking lot. I just wanted to talk because I missed him and-" her voice broke. "He pulled me into his lap and tried to- and he kept telling me it was my fault for wearing this dress and-" She started sobbing again and I pulled her tighter against me.

"And what?"

She shook her head, signaling she wasn't going to tell me.

"I'll just go pound his face in until he tells me." I warned.

"Don't!" She met my eyes again and my heart ached at the fear in hers.

"Then tell me." I whispered, wiping a tear away. She was way too beautiful to cry, especially over a low life like him.

"He… h-he..hi-hit me Niall." She sobbed and pulled away from me. If my blood wasn't boiling in anger I wouldn't have let her.

"He what?" I seethed. Only then did I notice the slight red mark on her cheek. It was fading but it was there. My fury tripled, staring at it. She noticed me looking and turned away, hurrying up the stairs. I trailed behind her in a trance.

"Olivia." I growled when she tried to shut the door in the face but my palm stopped it.

"Please Niall, it's fine. I'm fine."

"It's not fucking fine. I'm gonna kill him."

"No! He apologized once he realized what he did. He didn't mean it Niall, please I wasn't
supposed to tell anyone."

"You forgave him? Don't tell me your still with him Olivia. Don't fucking tell me that."

"Of course I am." She spoke quietly looking at the ground. "He didn't mean to."

"He's a fucking psycho Olivia. He hit you, and for what, you not wanting to fuck him in some
sleazy parking lot? What's it going to be next time?" I snarled in outrage, as I stalked closer to her.

"There won't be a next time." She snapped, backing away from me.

"Your right. I'm going to kick his ass until he's so fucking traumatized by me that he won't come within miles of this town again."

"You can't." She took one last step making her back hit the wall. Perfect. I closed the distance between us, holding her between the wall and my body.

"I can and I fucking will Olivia. No one messes with you." I took in our close proximity and starred down at her plump lips. My mind flooded with memories of how amazing they felt against mine.

"Please don't hurt him Niall." She begged, looking so vulnerable that it broke me. I knew I couldn't do anything if she asked me not to. No matter how much my body was urging to rip his head off I knew it would hurt her in the process.

"I won't." I told her and she relaxed slightly. "If you kiss me."

"W-what?"

"You heard me Olive." I smirked.

"I c-can't Niall. It's not right and-"

"It is right. It's so fucking right and you know it."

"Please don't make me do this." She shook her head.

"Fine." I snapped. "Goodnight Olivia." I pulled away from her and headed to the door of her room. I stopped at the entrance and looked back to her still teary eyed in the same position I left her. "I won't hurt him. I want to fucking kill him, I hope you know that. But I won't. If he ever does something like this again you better tell me and I won't stop myself."

"Okay."

"I just- your too important to me Olive and I won't bare it if you end up in the hospital one day
because of him."

"I won't. Please don't tell anyone Niall, especially not Liam."

I nodded hesitantly. "For now. Good night."

I walked down the hall to my room. I had the urge to punch a wall but I didn't want to destroy the Payne's property. After slipping out of my clothes so I was in just my boxers I sat back on my bed and turned the TV on. I texted Liam telling him that Olive was home. I probably should have told him what that fucker did to his sister, but I knew there would be no holding him back. He would kick the living shit out of him and I would join in, but Olive didn't want that. So I lied to my best friend saying she was okay.

I was flipping through the channels when there was a knock at my door. Confused I told them to come in and was shocked to see Olive. My eyes raked her body in the tank top and pajama shorts before quickly returning to her face.

"What's up?" I asked skeptically.

"I um.. I just wanted to say thank you." She said shyly standing in the doorway. "For not doing anything about it or telling anyone. And for caring I guess."

"Your welcome Olive. No need to thank me."

"Um, can I come in. I don't really want to be alone."

I scooted over and patted the bed next to me, a small smile on my face. She mimicked it and took the spot.

"We're not watching any chick flicks." I warned and she laughed.

"Please, I can't handle any of that mushy drama right now." My heart tugged at how hurt she must feel. I couldn't even imagine. I wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her closer to me. She sighed and rested her head on my shoulder. The position felt nice in a way I couldn't explain. I'd never cuddled with a girl before, no matter how many i'd been with, so this was a first.

"The Avengers it is." I played the movie and found myself absentmindedly running my fingers through her soft brown hair. I'd seen the movie so many times so I was hardly paying attention to it. Instead I was transfixed on the gorgeous girl in my arms. I watched as she concentrated on the film, she was so engrossed in it, it was adorable. I loved the way her nose scrunched up or her eyes widened, especially how she snuggled closer to me during a suspenseful part.

We both must have fallen asleep somewhere towards the end, because the next thing I knew I was waking up in the middle of the night with her still in my arms. I had never, ever actually slept with a girl before. It felt nice, I didn't know if it was having someone to cuddle with, or if it was because that someone was Olive. Most likely the latter. I fell back to sleep with a content smile.

………

"Get up. Both of you!" Someone pulled the blankets off making me tighten my hold on Olive. We both groaned in disapproval. "I swear to god I'll get a bucket of water." The voice threatened, that I now recognized as Liam's. Olive and I both shot up at that, pulling apart in the process, much to my disappointment. Did I just think that? What the hell was happening to me?

"What's going on here?" Liam asked with accusing eyes, mostly glaring at me.

"Relax, we fell asleep during a movie." I yawned, rubbing the sleep out of my eyes.

"Nothing happened Liam! I swear!" Olive told him in a panicked voice, making me roll my eyes.

"You looked awfully tangled there."

"Would you shut up, she's right nothing happened. Don't you think we'd be naked if it did?" That earned me a slap on the arm from Olive and a scowl from Liam.

"Whatever, I just wanted to tell you that mom and dad left." Liam's voice softened as he looked to Olive with sympathetic eyes.

"What?! Why didn't you wake me." She got out of the bed.

"I didn't even know, I just woke up. They left a note and money in the kitchen." Liam scoffed, obviously pissed at his parents. I could see the wetness forming in Olives eyes. Everyone kept hurting her and it was pissing me off. I was about to get up and hug her when Liam beat me to it.

"Oh yeah, and someone's here to see you." He rolled his eyes and I knew exactly who it was. My anger from last night resurfaced at the thought of seeing that fucker. I didn't know if I would be able to control myself.

Olive shot me a nervous glance before pulling away from Liam. "Okay. I just have to change. Can you go tell him I'll be right down."

"Yeah, yeah sure. Your both lucky I did't let him go up to your room. If he caught the little scene I walked in on he wouldn't be to happy." Liam shot us both pointed looks before walking out.

"You can't say anything Niall." She begged once Liam was down the hall.

"I won't." I walked over to my dresser and pulled out fresh boxers and jeans.

"I'm serious, please promise me you won't give away that you know."

"I promise, I told you last night I wouldn't hurt him right?" I raised an eyebrow and tugged my boxers down.

"What are you doing!?" She squeaked and looked away making me chuckle.

"Changing? Your the one in my room Olive. Don't get me wrong your more than welcome to stay for the show." I smirked.

"Please put on pants."

I pulled up my new boxers, rolling my eyes. "All clear." She sighed and looked back at me.

"I was vulnerable last night and I told you that in confidence that I could trust you. I just don't want him to get angry that I told someone."

"Look Olive, I'm not gonna tell him I know, or kick his ass. Which would serve him right. Just know that you deserve better."
She looked down at the floor and nodded slightly turning to leave. "Thanks Ni." She whispered before walking out the door.

This girl was going to be the death of me.
