Chapter 22

Calum’s POV

I get up early to take a shower. When I get out and get dressed I go downstairs. Mom and Mali are talking in hushed voices.
“Morning” I announce myself. Mom immediately turns and smiles.
“Morning, Calum” She says, eyeing Mali. Mali rolls her eyes and goes out of the door.
“What’s her deal?” I ask, taking an apple.
“We just had a little…discussion. No worries” She said and smiled. “Hurry up, or you’ll be late for school” She changes the subject.
I shrug it off and go out. I walk the short distance to Addie’s room. Her door Is opened. Again.
“Do you ever close this thing, or are you inviting all the weirdos that kidnap people and then kill them?” I say, slowly entering. She is dressed in all black, which looks really good on her.
“An open door is not an invitation” she says rolling her eyes. “Don’t even get me started” She says and takes her backpack. She passes me and I close her door.
“Aren’t you going to lock it?” I ask her. She stops, realizing that her dramatic exit will not be as dramatic when she comes back.
“It’s not even nine and you’re already annoying me” She says. I smirk as she locks the door.
“Aren’t you grumpy this morning” I say, opening the passenger door. Just to piss me off, she goes in the back. I close the door and jog to the driver’s side. “What’s with you? That time of the month?”
Not even a crack of a smile.
“Was that supposed to be funny?” She asks. I don’t answer and I constantly look at the rearview mirror, looking at her. She catches me a couple of times, but pretend she doesn’t.
We finally stop at Lucy’s house. I see Marissa come out of her own house. She eyes me and then glances at the empty passenger’s seat. I don’t look at her.
“Where’s Lucy?” I ask. I really want to get out of here.
“Why? Are you afraid of Marissa now?” She says.
“No just-“ I say, a bit confused. She is really moody. What the hell.
“So what, you just don’t want to face your girlfriend?” She says. Wait, what?! “You guys haven’t spoken in days”
“We broke up” I say, watching her from the rearview mirror. She looks surprised for a second, as if she didn’t know, and then her face is unreadable again. Did she really not know?
“Well, I guess you finally grew a pair” She says, looking away from me.
“What is your problem?” I say, turning around, to face her.
Before she can answer, the door opens and Lucy comes in. Her hair is wavy and chocolate brown, a bit darker than her skin. She smiles at me.
“First day at school” She says. She looks nervous.
“It won’t be that bad” I say, and turn to look ahead. We drive to school. Lucy is the only person talking. She is asking me questions about teachers and students and cliques and all that shit. I answer every one of her questions. Addie sits in silence in the back.
“Addie, can I eat lunch with you and Aggie please? I don’t want to sit alone” She turns to Addie, as I part the car.
“I don’t eat lunch with Aggie” She answers shortly.
“What? Why?” Lucy says confused. I guess she doesn’t know about their little fall out. “Well, can I eat lunch with you?”
“Of course dude” Addie says, and smiles for the first time this morning. Looks good on her.
We get out of the car as the principle gets out of her car. She spots Lucy.
“Lucia Howell?” She asks. Lucy nods a bit confused. “I’m principle Gold. Do you mind walking with me to my office?” She asks, and then Lucy and Principle Gold are walking away.
Addie immediately starts walking away, but I catch her elbow.
“What is with you today?” I ask her, my voice hushed.
“Nothing” she says, staring at me, basically saying leave me alone. I pick up on it, and release her elbow. As we’re staring at each other, glaring on her end, Michael pops up next to us.
“Yo” He says. After a few moments I turn to him. His green hair is now white.
“What happened to your hair?” I ask, trying to kill the tension in the air. Or just push it back a little. Michael doesn’t pick up on it.
“Dyed it yesterday night. Thought it was a time for a change” He says, ruffling it.
“Your hair is going to fall out one day” Addie says. She is smiling now. As if she is in a good mood. As if her little episode ended, and now she is A-okay. They start walking to school, and I walk behind them. Jealousy sparks in me. Stop it, Calum.
Her and Michael have the same first period and I hate that. Why am I being such a baby, ugh!

Monday is such a slow day. By the time lunch comes I feel like an eternity passed since I drove Addie and Lucy to school. I sit on our usual table. Michael is already there with Addie. They are laughing. I feel like I’m imposing.
“Hey” I say, and sit down next to Mikey, who’s opposite of Addie. She doesn’t look at me. Instead she turns towards the entrance, where apparently everyone is looking at.
“What is happening inside?” Mikey says, and stands up.
“Dramaaa” Addie says, and laughs.
“This new girl has a death wish” Says a guy who passes us. Addie jumps up. Me and Mikey follow her and we see Lucy and Ashley, one of Marissa’s friends. They are surrounded by a lot of people. Marissa is laughing at her. So are the rest of their table. But Lucy seems unfazed by them.
“You think you got yourself surrounded by these little parasites, and you the main attraction? Bitch, please. You need to get your head out of your ass before it swells” Lucy says. Addie comes up to Lucy.
“What the hell is going on here?” She says, stepping in front of Lucy.
“This bitch thinks she can insult me” Lucy says, pointing at Ashley.
“Dude, chill out” Addie says, and Lucy steps back.
“Watch your back” Ashley says.
Lucy turns to her, gives her a once over and laughs. She laughs.
“What, are you gonna do?” She says, corssing her arms in front of her.
“Hey, hey” I say, as Lucy takes a step forward. “Lucy, chill. Ashley, sit down”
I take Lucy by the shoulder and lead her away. The crowd dispurts. People are staring at our table.
“Dude, what the hell?” Addie says, her voice hushed.
“What?” Lucy asks, innocently, drinking chocolate milk.
“What was that all about? One day, and you make a huge scene in school?” Addie says, a bit forceful.
“She’s been talking shit to me all morning” Lucy said “I don’t even know the bitch, and she goes on saying I’m a freak and a loser. I swear, if she says one more word to me, that little face of hers will need plastic surgery”
“Wooaaah. Calm down, Lucy” Mikey says. He seems a bit scared. To be honest, so am I.
Watch your back. Yeah right. Like I’m scared of her polyester hair.” Lucy looks down. Addie and me look at each other. She knows what’s going on as much as I do.

Addie’s POV

I am still confused by the whole lunch situation after school. I meet Lucy outside. She is talking to Michael. His white hair surprises me again.
“Lucy, can we talk?” I ask her. She nods, and we move away from Mikey. I notice Calum joining him after a while.
“Dude, what got into you?” I ask her, my voice hushed.
“Nothing. Jeeez. I just stood up for myself” She says, putting her hands in the pockets of her jacket.
“That was not nothing. I get the whole standing up part, but you could’ve handled the situation better. Where did all that come from?” I ask. She looks down “Did something happened back home? I know you punched a girl and all that, but I mean…I don’t remember you being like this”
“Well, a lot of things changed, cousin” She says, finally meeting my eyes. I am completely surprised.
“I don’t know if I should be proud of you, or scared of you” I say, and she cracks a smile. “Remind me not to piss you off” I say, putting my arm around her shoulders. We turn back and see Aggie standing next to Mikey and Calum.
“Hey, Aggie” Lucy greets her, all cheerful.
“What happened during lunch? Marissa and Ashley were talking about some new girl who was being a bitch?” She says, crossing her arms.
“Ummm, Ashley was the one being a bitch.” I say. Aggie arches her eyebrow “You look surprised.” I say. Aggie rolls her eyes.
“Lucy?” Oh okay, now she is ignoring me. Kay.
“That blonde bitch? She your friend?” Lucy puts a hand on her hip. I glance at Mikey and Calum. They are both leaning on the fence and following the situation.
“Yes. They can make your life hell here. Getting on their bad side is not a good idea” She says. I almost laugh.
“Aggie, hate to disappoint you, but polyester-hair girl and her band of cheerleaders do not intimidate me. I’ve dealt with girls like that. I’m trained in the field” She says. Mikey gives her a high five.
“Preach it, sister” he says. Calum turns to him, almost exploding in laughter.
“Don’t say that. Ever” He says, tapping him on the shoulder. They start talking and laughing.
“Fine. They are planning something, just so you know.” She says. “I don’t know what, but just…be careful” Aggie finishes and then leaves. I stare at the back of her head as she walks away. Lucy stares at me.
“Okay, what is up with you and Aggie?” She says, stepping in my view.
“We’re not on speaking terms” I answer. Lucy looks at me confused.
“But we all had dinner a couple of days ago. You seemed completely fine.” She says. “Did something happen yesterday?” She asks.
“No. More like a couple of weeks ago. This guys tried to kinda rape me, and Aggie is still friends with them. And a whole bunch of other things, but yeah…she’s pulling off what she pulled off in freshman year.” I say, looking down.
“Damn. I thought she grew out of that” Lucy says, looking back at Aggie.
“So did I” I say, almost whisper it.
“What happened in freshman year?” Calum asks. I shot him a look, not to push it, but Lucy is already talking. Damn it Lucy.
“In freshman year, Aggie became friends with this cheerleader, Sandra, and her sister, whatever her name was. Anyway, they were like the bitchiest bitches ever to bitch the planet. And Aggie talked a lot of shit about Addie, because that was the only way she could become friends with them – talk shit about Addie because they were bullying her. And Aggie wanted to be the top of the social ladder, so she kinda stepped on Addie to get there. She apologized later on, and-“ She is not stopping.
“Lucy, please. I think that’s enough” I say, feeling Calum’s and Michael’s eyes on me. I face them, my eyes jumping from one to the other “Seriously, it’s in the past. It was a shitty thing to do, but I’m over it” They kinda still look at me, until Lucy interrupts.
“Anywayyyy” She says “I’ve got a shit tone of school work to catch up on. I’ll see you guys tomorrow”
We watch her walk away. Her hair sways behind her back. She might be my new hero. I am still amazed by what happened during lunch.
“Luke picks them well” Mikey says under his breath, and Calum hits him with his elbow.
“Do you think he likes her?” I turn around. Calum laughs.
“Uuuummm yes!” Mikey says “Did you not see them in Ash’s garage yesterday?” I laugh.

The rest of the week passes in a blur. Calum gives me a ride, we pick up Lucy, we all have lunch together. Luke shows up on Thursday, and is incredibly shy in front of Lucy. She has lunch with us, and Marissa and her friends have another reason why to look at our table as if they are gonna barf. Lucy, surprisingly, has only one more confrontation with Ashley. They were in the hallway, and Ashley bumped into her. Lucy was barely holding her inner animal in, not letting it claw Ashley’s eyes out.
We hang out at Ash’s only on Wednesday. Elena is gone, and he is a bit mopey and glum. Me and Lucy hang at her place mostly because there’s less of a chance to run into Ashley there.
This past week, Aggie, Marissa and Chris are having some group project, and so they hang around in my living room, procrastinating. On Thursday Ashley joins them, so we decided not to hang out there for the time being.
My mom seems happier, she my aunt and Mrs. Hood have been spending a lot of time together this past week, and they were suppose to go out tonight, Friday, with my uncle and Mr. Hood to some restaurant for some grown-up bonding.
Thank God my mom never actually made me invite Michael for dinner this week. I think she might’ve forgotten, or is waiting for me to drop my guard and drop the bomb one morning.
Anyway, today we decided to hang out at my place, and I even told Aggie not to call her friends over, because my friends will be here.
Lucy came right after school, and Mikey and Luke showed up around six. Ash came around 6:15 and Calum is yet to show up. If he shows up.
Calum and I have had minimal socialization. I don’t know if he is avoiding me, but I am kinda avoiding him. I don’t know why I am mad at him, really. I just feel like he Is not the only one who can be moody, and I actually find our bickering enjoyable and I think that’s really weird and messed up.
“Can we drink tonight?” Ash says, two minutes after he comes in.
“I don’t know when my mom is coming home, so I don’t know if we can drink here “ I say, killing the buzz a bit.
“We can go to a club?” Lucy says.
“Umm, you’re, what, 12? You’re not gonna get in a club” Mikey jokes.
“Funny, you should do stand up” She replies.
“We could do that” Ash says. And then looks at Luke.
“Yeah, why not. If we get in” He says, looking at Lucy.
“We will get in. Have a little faith” She says. They all turn to look at me.
“Yeah, why not” I say. Ash yells a woo-hoo, and then they are off to go home and get dressed.
“Can you tell Calum that we are going to a club?” Mikey says, as he gets out.
“Um…yeah” I say. I don’t know if the others have noticed the way Calum and I have been lately with each other. But I guess not…at least they never mentioned anything to me
Calum shows up five minutes after they leave. He is dressed in basketball shorts and a t-shirt.
“Where is everyone?” He asks, coming in.
Lucy is eating ice cream in the living room.
“We decided that we’re going out tonight.” I say. I’ve gotten used to bicker with him, it’s kinda hard to talk like a normal human being with him “We’re going to some club, somewhere, so you should get cleaned up” I say.
He looks at me, as if trying to figure out if I am joking or not, but then Lucy shouts from the living room.
“Oh, which reminds me, Addie can I borrow a dress or something?” She asks, her mouth full of ice cream.
“Yeah, go look through my closet.” I answer, and hear her footsteps towards my room.
“Fine” Calum says, and before he leaves he turns to me and says “Save me a dance” And then he is out. I stand there a bit surprised by his statement, but then I go to my room to get ready, and push the thought of Calum and me dancing far, far away, that I almost forget about it.
