Chapter 21

Addie’s POV

On Sunday I spend the whole day with Lucy. We mostly catch up. She tells me about that fight in school, and how the other girl didn’t even get detention, and how some boy came up to her and told her that she is really pretty. Then they went out for a while, but she didn’t really like him, so they broke up. Oh well.
After a while, Lucy passes out, jet lag, and I read a book. Just as I get really into my book, someone knocks on my door.
I walk towards it, and see Mikey through the glass.
“What are you doing here?” I ask, confused.
“I was bored” he says, looking inside my room. “Who’s that?” He asks me.
“My cousin Lucy” I say, keeping my voice low.
“You wanna hang out?” He asks me, leaning on the doorframe.
“I’m grounded, remember?” I say, crossing my arms in front of my chest.
“Kinda hoped you weren’t anymore” He says, smiling. I shrug. “Well if your mom changes her mind, we’re at Ash’s. Gonna band.”
“Without Luke?” I ask, arching my eyebrow. “How is he, by the way?”
“Well, he has a high fever. He called me this morning. He had a weird dream. Might’ve been a hallucination. His mom wants to take him to the hospital and he is being a little bitch about it” He answers.
“Ohhhh” I say pouting. Poor Luke.
“Anyway, have you seen Calum? His car is here, but he isn’t home and I’ve tried calling him…” Mikey says, taking out his phone, checking if Calum has called him.
“No.” I say, “He called me last night, but it was like a but-dial or something” I laugh. I’m still disappointed he didn’t actually want to talk to me.
“Oh, okay. Well if you see him, tell him to get his but to Ash’s.” He says and grins.
“Will do” I smile.
“Addieeee” Lucy groans. Almost forgot she’s there.
“Yeah?” I ask, turning my head to her. She stares at Michael, squinting.
“Why is there a troll in your room?” She asks. I erupt in laughter, and Michael joins me.
“Lucy, this is Michael” I say.
“Ohhhhh” She says, and my cheeks flush. Now it seems as if I talk about Michael. He looks at me and arches an eyebrow. I want to dig a hole and hide in it.
Lucy gets up from the bed, and even with bed hair, she looks pretty.
“Nice to meet you” she says, and extends her hand. “I’m Lucy”
“Michael” He takes her hand and they shake.
Standing next to me, Lucy is a few inches shorter. Which is weird, because she’s always been at least a head or two shorter than me.
“I’ll tell you if he calls” I say to Michael.
“Cool. And if your mom changes your mind, join us, kay?” He backs away and then looks at Lucy “She’s invited as well” He says, and then he leaves.
“Invited where? Is there a party?” Lucy says, as we go back on the bed.
“No, it’s just my friends are hanging out. But I can’t go because I’m grounded.” I say.
“Well, I might be able to convince your mom.” She says. “You know, I’m new, and I’d like to meet people so I’m not like a complete Martian tomorrow in school.” She grins.
That could work. And I don’t want to stay home. And it would be nice for Lucy to meet the guys, and Elena, before she leaves tomorrow.
“Do your magic” I say and point to my phone. My mom is at aunt Anna’s house, helping them unpack and settle in. Lucy calls her mom and asks if she could go out with me, and then my mom said that I was grounded, and then Lucy brought up the whole Martian thing, and voilà, I’m a free bunny.
I put on jeans and a sweater, and Lucy borrows a dress from me.
“I want to make a good first impression” She says, and she puts eyeliner. I shake my head, and in 15 minutes we are out.
‘We’re coming. You still at Ashton’s?’ I text Michael.
‘not like I have any other friends.’ He answers in a moment.
We walk for a few minutes, talking, and next thing you know, we are ducking under the garage door. Ash is on the arm chair, Elena in his lap. Michael is on the beanbag, the snapback on his year, guitar in his hands.
“Hello” He says looking up.
“Ash, Elena, this is my cousin Lucy” I say. They share polite greetings, and then we sit down.
They start talking with Lucy, and I quickly re-learn something about her – she is a really easygoing person. She apologizes to Mikey for calling him a troll. He shrugs it off. After half an hour, Calum calls Michael.
“Yo” He answers lazily. “I stopped by, but you weren’t there” He says into the phone. “Okay….kay…Alright but if he dies here, you’re dealing with his body…I deal with his alive body, not really into necrophilia….alright, alright. Bye” He finishes, laughing.
“Not sure I want to know what that conversation was about…” I say, grimacing. Michael grins.
“Luke wants to come, and he is still feverish, but he says he can’t stay in his room anymore, and his mom is not home, so he can escape” Mikey elaborates.
We then discuss dead bodies and how to hide them, and I’m afraid to say that Elena has extensive knowledge on the subject. She is so weird, I love it.
After maybe 10 minutes, Calum and Luke arrive. Luke is pale and looks really tired.
“Why are you out of bed?” I ask him, as he sits down on the other side of me.
“I’m dying” he says, leaning back.
Lucy pokes me and then I remember.
“Oh, sorry. Guys this is Lucy, my cousin. Lucy that’s Calum, and the half dead one is Luke.”
Mikey and Lucy then continue their conversation, and Mikey teases Luke for being sick, and Lucy joins in.
I get up to go to the bathroom. I walk inside and am a bit confused at first as to where the bathroom is, but then I find it. After I’m done I get out and see Calum walking to the kitchen
“Help me make snacks?” He says, as we walks to the kitchen. He is so weird these past few days, I honestly don’t know what to expect of him. However, I do join him in the kitchen, and we get bowls out.
“What are we making?” I ask.
“Nachos” He grins at me. We then take out Doritos and look for cheese, and put it in the microwave. And then we are just standing in the kitchen, in silence. I can’t take how weird he is.
“Did I do something?” I ask. I have a feeling this conversation we’ll be more awkward than the silence.

Calums’ POV

I stare at her. How do I explain what I’m feeling without telling her how I feel about her.
“No. Why do you ask?” I say. Yeah, playing dumb. That’s my tactic. Okay, sure.
“You’re being really weird” She says, not meeting my eyes.
“What do you mean?” I ask, and then our eyes lock.
“I don’t know, yesterday in the grocery store…you seemed as if you were mad at me, and the day before that, you were completely fine. And you haven’t said a word to me since you came today, and now we’re…I don’t know. Whatever” she says and looks down. The microwave dings and she takes out the bowl of nachos. “You can bring that one” She says, and before I can say anything or apologize, she is out of the door.
I wait for the other bowl of nachos alone in the kitchen. When I come back, Lucy is laughing at something Luke is saying. He is smiling. I think he might like her. Well…she is pretty. Bust be in their family.
Addie looks amused by their conversation, and her and Mikey exchange a look. As if thinking the same thing as me. Luke is into her. Elena and Ash pass me, and go inside, holding hands.
“Where are you going?” I ask them, and then I realize how stupid my question is. Mikey throws an empty bottle at me.
“Somewhere where you’re not invited” Ash says, and Elena giggles.
Addie looks at Michael confused. Mikey comes incredibly close to her face. I look away, my blood boiling. Jealousy, anger, lust. I need to chill.
“They’re gonna have sex” He whispers, and then she laughs.
“Calum and the bottle?” She asks, laughing. I look at her confused. How did this escalate
“Ash and Elena, you idiot” Mikey says, and then throws a bottle at her.
They laugh and I suddenly don’t want to be here. Is she doing this on purpose?
“Care to share that nacho bowl?” Michael says to me. I sit on the armchair and then put the bowl down.
Addie doesn’t look at me, or talk to me the whole afternoon, and then the sun is setting. It’s not as cloudy today, so you can actually see the sunset.
“Hi mom” She answers, “It’s not dark, the street lamps aren’t even on!” She says, and laughs. “Kay, I’ll be home soon” She says and hangs up.
“Guys, I think Luke is dead” Lucy says, poking Luke. He is asleep on the ground.
“I’m not dead” He mumbles and then grins at Lucy.
“I don’t know man, you look kinda dead” Mikey says.
“Guys, it’s been a pleasure” Addie says, standing up “But we need to go. Come one Lucy”
“Hold on” I say before I can stop myself “I’ll drive you.”
“Don’t leave me with this one” Mikey says, pointing at Luke, who is still on the floor.
“You don’t have to do that” Addie speaks to me. Her gaze is intense, and I almost back out.
“It’s no problem at all” I say, keeping her gaze. It’s turning into a stare off competition, and I’m not gonna lose.
“Cool, come on” Lucy says, getting Addie by the shoulders. She loses the contacts. I win.
We walk to my car, and Lucy goes in the back seat. Addie sits in the front.
Lucy asks if I could drop her off at her place. And then she gives me directions, very poorly.
“There’s a yellow house across from me” She says. I know exactly where that is.
We drive the short distance, and then I am stopping on the opposite side of Marissa’s house. Addie notices my discomfort.
“It was really nice to meet you, Calum” She says, and then she is out.
“She lives across from Marissa. Great.” Addie says. I chuckle, and she stares at me. Why is she mad at me now?!
We finally get to her house, and I turn off the ignition.
“You really didn’t have to drive me home” She says, her face unreadable.
“I wanted to” I say.
“Kay” She says and goes for the door. I grab her elbow. She turns surprised. And I don’t know what to say. How do I apologize for being jealous?
“I’m sorry” I say, letting go of her elbow.
“Aren’t you always” She says, and then she is out before I can stop her. She doesn’t turn back.
When I drive back, I see that Mikey is alone in the garage, strumming his guitar.
“Where’s Luke?” I ask, confused.
“He’s inside. Napping” He smiles at me.
I nod and sit on the armchair. I take out my phone and I want to text Addie but I don’t know what to say.
“You okay?” Mikey asks me.
“Yeah. Why wouldn’t I be?” I ask. I don’t meant to sound snappy.
“Jeeez, why are you so grumpy lately?” He asks me.
“I don’t know. I just am” I say. I don’t meet his gaze.
“Cal? What’s going on? I’m serious” He says, and when I meet his gaze I know I shouldn’t be angry at him. He likes Addie, and she likes him, and I’m just jealous. I should really stop.
“Nothing” I say. He knows me too well for this. “It’s just…I kinda miss being with Marissa” Lie. The biggest lie I’ve told. Michael’s eyes widen. I gotta be more convincing than that “I mean, the Marissa in the beginning of our relationship. She was nice, and I liked being around her…”
“She was always a witch, mate” Mikey says, and I smile. “She just hid it back then” At least he bought this.
The rest of the day, after we dropped Luke home, Mikey and I spend it together. We went to eat at a burger place near by, and after that we went to the beach. By the time I got home it was 11, and I was tired af.
“Wanna watch a movie with us?” Mali peeks from the living room. My mom and her are place in front of the TV.
“Where’s dad?” I ask, standing in the doorway.
“Working late.” Mom says. I nod. He always is…
“I’m tired. I’m gonna go to bed” I say. Before they can stop me, I climb the stairs, taking two at a time. I close the door to my room, and I go to close my window, since it’s been opened all day and my room is like a refrigerator.
Addie’s lights are on, and I get this urge to talk to her. But what will I say? Sorry again?
“Are you stalking someone?” I hear a voice. I jolt up and see Aggie’s head peeking from a window on the front of the house. I shake my head and come inside before I say something stupid. Closing my window, I realize, not saying anything is even worse. But it’s too late now. Damn it.
I sit staring at my phone, and then I finally think of an excuse to talk to her. She picks up on the third ring.
“Yes?” She answers. Annoyance in her tone. Not good.
“Do you want a ride to school tomorrow?” I ask, shutting my eyes.
“I have to stop by Lucy’s in the morning” She says. Was that a no?
“Can I give you both a ride?” I say. Maybe it’ll be less awkward. She exhales a deep breath.
“Fine. Don’t be late” She says, and then she hangs up. I smile even through I can hear it in her voice how annoyed she is with me. At least I’ll spend those few minutes with her. And maybe I’ll know what to say.
I go to bed, happy that I called her, and happy that she agreed for me to pick her up. I fall asleep instantly.
