Day of the Dance
Nici convinced me to buy a really tight and short one shoulder black dress with a very complicated cut out design in the back so I couldn’t wear a regular strapless bra with the dress. I already had my dress on and my hair done so it was loosely French braided around my head and came to a pony tail on one side and the pony tail was fully curled. I just finished putting my make up on when I heard a knock at the door. My clock said 7 o’clock, Toby said he wouldn’t pick me up till 7:30. When I open the door Liam is standing there in blue jeans and a t-shirt. He is holding a bouquet of white, purple, and yellow tulips. He knew tulips were my favorite because one day when we were wondering around the park I found a patch of tulips and I thought they were the most beautiful flowers I have ever seen, and then I told him that if a guy ever got me flowers I would love them forever, the same goes for chocolate.
“I can’t stand being mad at you, would you forgive the way I acted and we can be best friends again?” Liam hadn’t really looked at me yet he kept looking at his shoes since I have answered the door.
I grabbed the flowers and pulled him into a really big hug. “Of course you are forgiven! I can’t believe you remembered how much I love tulips”
“How could I forget? You were so ecstatic when you were talking about them.” Liam’s eyes wandered from my eyes to my feet. He was checking me out! Liam Payne was checking me out! “Wow you look…”
“Pretty?” I asked tentatively.
“No…. gorgeous, irresistible, sexy…” his voice got quieter and quieter after he said gorgeous. His eyes wandered down again then snapped up to meet my eyes “You can’t go to the dance like that! No one should see that much of you, I shouldn’t see that much of you!” He quickly covered his eyes with his hand, he peeked out of them to see me one last time and quickly closed his hand.
I started laughing “Liam, don’t be ridiculous! I wear less when we go swimming! Now come on in!” I grabbed Liam’s arm and dragged him into the kitchen where my mum was making some potato soup and homemade bread.
“Liam dear I didn’t know you were coming!” My mum said as we entered the kitchen.
“Yea Mum I came to apologize for being so rude when I came this past week.” Liam said as he went over and gave my mum a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
“Liam you can stay here when Aurora goes to the dance, and you are welcome to spend the night if you wish I am sure that Aurora wouldn’t mind sharing her room with you!”
“That sounds wonderful! Thank you Mum! I have missed spending most of my time here.”
“Aurora honey! Can you and Liam get together so I can take a couple pictures of you two together! I always thought that you guys would have gone to this dance together!” My mum went to go get her camera and left us in the kitchen together.
“Sorry about Mum she can be a little crazy sometimes.” I said to Liam
“Auri, I have been here enough to know your mom!” Liam said laughing.
My mum returned with the camera and made us stand in several places around the house together. I went up to my room to grab my shoes and purse because it was getting really close to 7:30. I heard a knock at the front door when I got to my room. “I got it” Liam screamed.
“Hello Toby” I heard Liam say in a sour tone.
“Liam? What are you doing here? I thought you were off singing your little heart out in the City?” Toby said in a teasing tone. Toby never understood the desire to pursue any career other than professional sports.
“Yea, I am getting pretty big now though!” Liam said frustrated. I grabbed my stuff and headed down the stairs towards the front door. I saw Liam standing there with his arms crossed and Toby giving him the death glare back.
“Hey Toby!” I said as I reached the bottom step. Toby looked at me and his eyes widened and then wandered. I knew he was checking me out too. Liam noticed too and he did not look too happy about it.
“Hey Auri!” Toby said. I hated when people other than Nici and Liam called me Auri, so I cringed.
“Don’t call her that!” Liam demanded. “You don’t have the right” His face started getting red.
“Sorry about Liam he just likes to be rude sometimes” I shot Liam a glare and his face softened and he backed up. “But I prefer you to call me Aurora please”
“Oh okay!” Toby leaned down to give me a kiss on the cheek just as my mum walked into the foyer.
“Oh let me get a picture of this” My mum flashed the camera before I could stop her. “Okay and then I just want one picture of you two together then you can go” That’s strange she took about 100 pictures of me and Liam but she only wants 2 with the guy who I was actually going to the dance with.
With that Toby and I left to the dance. We danced for every single song and on the slow songs he would just look into my eyes and not wander to other girls. I felt so special, if I didn’t like Liam as much as I did I might have fallen for him right then. But every time I look in to Toby’s green eyes I hoped to be looking into Liam’s brown eyes. After the dance Toby drove me to the park right down the street from my house, the park where I met Liam 11 years ago.
We walked over to the swing set and he sat on one swing and I sat on the one next to him. “Do you know why I asked you to the dance tonight?” Toby asked as he gently swung.
“A bet? To get into my pants?” I joked with Toby.
“No, neither of those reasons, I have had a crush on you since last year, I was just afraid to say anything until now.”
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier? What changed?”
“Well I was always afraid that Liam would try to beat me up if I told you. He is very protective of you”
“Yea I am sorry about that, but there is nothing I can do about it” and it isn’t like I wanted to do anything about it, I thought it was sweet when he was protective of me.
“I was wondering however, since Liam really isn’t around anymore to beat me up, if you wanted to be my girlfriend?” Toby looked right into my eyes when he said the last sentence. I just looked back at him and I didn’t really know what to say.
“Can I think about it over night? Please? I really like you but I just need to let this seep in.” I stood as I replied to him.
“Okay,” Toby looked down on the ground like he was very upset “Let’s take you home then”
We walked up to my house I could see a shadow pass in my bedroom window.
“Well I had a really good time! I am glad I went with you.” I said as I was about to open the door.
“Wait!” Toby said. He leaned down and gave me a soft and passionate kiss on the lips. “That was to remind you what you could have if you say yes to be my girlfriend”. He turned and left and I went inside and up to my room, completely forgetting the shadow in the window.
As I shut my door I smiled and started to unzip my dress when I was about to pull the strap off my shoulder I realized that there was someone laying on my bed. I screamed and grabbed my dress to keep it from falling. I realized it was Liam, I noticeably relaxed. “Liam! You scared me what the hell?”
“You kissed him…” Liam said matter of factly.
“Yes I did, I had a great time tonight too by the way!” I grudgedly walked to my dresser to grab a t-shirt and a pair of sweats. “Turn around I am going to change.”
“Okay… do you like him?” Liam asked hesitantly.
“Yea I guess so he was really sweet tonight. Why?”
“Can’t I be curious about my best friend’s love life?” I pulled my off my bra and slipped my t-shirt on quickly, I thought I saw him sneak a peek but it was probably nothing. I pulled the dress off all the way and slipped on the sweats.
“I guess so but then you have to tell me about yours in return! Deal? Okay you can turn around now.”
“Deal. You go first.”
“Well tonight we danced every dance and he would only look at me” even though I wished it was you looking at me, I thought “He then took me to the park after the dance and told me that he has had a crush on me for years, and asked if I would be his girlfriend…” I didn’t want to tell him the last part but we had a deal.
“Did you say yes?” Liam asked
“Nope! It is your turn to tell me your love life.”
“Nothing really, there are plenty of girls trying to hit on me when I am just walking around on the street. You would not believe the amount of girls who want to marry me or kiss me or just have my babies it is really quite scary. And I guess there is this one girl who is the assistant of my stylist who is always flirting with me. I thought of possibly hanging out with her sometime outside of work but I don’t know” When he talked about the other girl it pained me but I knew that he should be happy and find someone because I know that it will never be me.
“You should go for it….” I said quietly.
“You really think I should?”
“Yeah you should at least try dating her you might end up actually liking her.”
“Oh okay…. Well are you going to tell me if you agreed to be Toby’s girlfriend?”
“Oh well I said yes” I lied because I knew in that moment that was the answer I was going to give him. He was attainable while Liam wasn’t anymore. He could have any girl in the entire world he would not choose his nerdy friend.
“Oh…” With that the conversation ended and it was and awkward end.
“Hey, do you want to watch a movie or something” I asked.
“Yea I would like that.”
I put a movie into the player in my room and turned on the TV and went to sit by Liam on the bed I cuddled up to him. I laid my head on his chest and wrapped my arm around his body. He then wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
“You know you will always be my number one girl no matter how many girls I date.” Liam said as the movie titles started.
“And you will always be my favorite boy.” I knew that I meant that I would never love anyone like I love him, he is my other half, even if he didn’t mean it like I did.
I only remember watching about half of the movie and I fell half asleep. I heard him softly singing to me. It wasn’t something that I have heard him sing before.
