Icing on the Cake

Chapter Ninety-Nine

~99~

Anastasia started to get restless. Not because she was impatient, but because she was nervous. She was nervous about her brother. She was getting increasingly upset.

It had been almost thirty silent minutes in a waiting room and they still hadn’t told us anything.

I walked down the hall to get us some bottles of water out of a vending machine when I saw my brother.

“Did you come here to see mom?” Jack asked me.

“No.” I stated.

“She’s getting worse.” Jack said. “We don’t know…if she’ll make it.”

Any sympathy I might have had for my mother suddenly disappeared. All I could think about was Adam and I couldn’t think about her at all.

“Well I don’t know if my son will make it.” I said.

Jack looked at me, dumbfounded. “What?” He sputtered.

“I don’t have time to worry about the woman who left me for dead when my own son might be laying dead in this building.”

I turned around to walk away. I would find a different vending machine. Maybe the time I would spend doing that would help pass the time.

“The boy you adopted is here? What happened?” Jack asked, following behind me.

“He fell in the pool.” I said. “Calum got him out right away but he wasn’t breathing when we pulled him out. They only say that the doctors are doing all they can so I don’t know what’s happening.”

“Oh my God, I’m sorry.” He said.

I turned around to face him. “Go deal with your mess.” I said. “I’ll deal with mine.”

When I finally made it back to Calum, Julia and Anastasia, Calum stood up. Oh no, that’s not a good thing, right?

“He’s going to be fine!” Calum said. I breathed a huge sigh of relief and my knees went weak as my eyes welled up.

“He needs to stay overnight to make sure he doesn’t dry drown.” Calum said. “But we can bring him home tomorrow.”

We just arrived back home with Adam the next morning, and he was springy and ready to play like nothing had happened.

“I’m done with hurdles.” I said to Calum. “No more surprises.”

Right as I said that, there was a knock on the door.

“Perfect timing.” Calum said sarcastically. “I think you jinxed us. I think our next hurdle is here.”

Don’t even say that.

Notes

This is it! Tomorrow, it will be ONE HUNDRED CHAPTERS!
You won't believe what's going to happen tomorrow. I'm trying something new, and doing a much more serious storyline.
And as a preview of what's going to happen, I had to google (being American) if Australia has district attorneys, only to find that they are called crown prosecutors.

PREVIEW OF CHAPTER 100!

“Are you Luke Hemmings?” One of them asked.

“Yeah…” I said nervously.

“And this is also the residence of Julia Boyko and her two children, Adam and Anastasia Boyko?” The other asked.

“What’s going on?” Calum asked as he walked over with Anastasia in his arms. Julia walked over with Adam.
