Icing on the Cake

Chapter Eighty-Four

~84~

One thing that really sucks about being in the position I’m in is that when someone from your past comes back into your life, you don’t know if they want to be in your life for you, or to capitalize on you.

Karen and I were planning to just go get some coffee, which seemed like a chill way to catch up. I walked into the Starbucks and saw Karen. I thought back to the memories I had of her.

***FLASHBACK TO NOVEMBER 2011***

I was sitting in that horrible high school I went to. It was in the evening, around six p.m. There was a band and choir concert that night, and there would be the next two nights. The concert wouldn’t start until eight, and we didn’t even have to be there until seven-fifteen. I was there early just to get all my stuff together before everyone came flooding in.

Karen came rushing through the door with a makeup bag, hair brush and curling iron.

“Hey, Luke.” She said to me. We weren’t really friends at this point, but we knew of each other and had talked a little from time to time.

“Hey, Karen.” I responded. “What brings you here this early?”

“I just had to get out of my house.” Karen explained. “My brother, my mom, it’s all too much. I’ll do my hair and makeup here.”

We had brief moments of talking while she did her makeup, and at about five-to-seven, she realized she wouldn’t have enough time to do everything. And people started walking in to get their music and instruments ready.

“I can do your hair for you.” I offered. “And you can do your makeup while I do the hair.”

Karen agreed, and we moved to a stairway behind the music room to avoid the people and find an outlet. I plugged the curling iron in to do her hair.

“This looks better than whenever I do it!” Karen said once her hair was done. “Will you do it for me the rest of the nights?”

“Of course!” I said back, because I had really enjoyed doing it for her and I really enjoyed talking with her.
