“Why was he so open, and accepting back in high school?” I asked on our drive home. “It doesn’t make sense. How could Ashton be totally cool with it in high school but not now?”

“I don’t know.” Calum responded. “Maybe it affected him less then. Or maybe he didn’t really believe it. Or maybe he was faking.”

“Was he ever our friend?” I asked.

“I really don’t know.” Calum said. “Him and I were so close. It was like you and Michael close. I just, don’t know how to sort this out.

“If I had not done anything.” I pondered. “Knowing what you know now, if I had just kept my mouth closed, would it be better, with Ashton?”

“What do you mean?” Calum asked.

“Knowing what you know about him now.” I said as we were parking and walking into our house. “Knowing what he’s really like. Would you rather still be pretending and have him like you for someone you aren’t?”

“I don’t know.” Calum said. “That probably wouldn’t be better.”

“God.” I said. “My parents, him. So many things are crumbling apart. “

“I know it seems that way.” Calum said.

“Thank you for being my rock.” I said while giving him a hug.

“We have bigger things to look forward to.” Calum said while looking at the pamphlets that represented what we had been working towards for a while.

“I know.” I said, picking up our adoption papers. “And I can’t wait for us to start our family!”
