Icing on the Cake
Chapter Forty-Four
~44~
“Are you sure you don’t want me to go with you?” Calum asked me the next morning as I was getting ready to leave.
“I’m sure.” I said. “Thank you, but it’s best if it’s just the three of us.”
“Don’t do anything you don’t want to.” Calum said while giving me a kiss.
“I’ll try not to.” I said. “Why am I nervous? This isn’t a big deal. I’m meeting my two brothers with whom I have a thin but sufficiently good relationship, for Starbucks, and discussing the possibility of trying to reconcile with our parents, which I don’t plan on doing.” I could tell that I was starting to get emotional.
I walked out to my car, and just turned on the radio, trying not to think about anything. I just drove to Starbucks, debating which type of frappuccino I should get.
I met them inside, we hugged briefly, and ordered. We asked each other how we were doing, how each of our significant others’ was doing. It wasn’t until we sat down that the conversation went deeper than just small talk.
“Do you know what that Arzaylea is doing?” Jack asked.
“Why?” I asked. “That’s kind of out of the blue.”
“I don’t know…” Jack trailed off.
“Do you want me to hook you two up or something?” I asked. “She’s just an American actress those bitches hired.”
“Look,” Ben said, “We want to talk to Mom and Dad. All three of us. We even got them to arrange a time for us to meet.”
“No way.” I said plainly. “Unless they are going to get on their knees and beg for my forgiveness I don’t want to see them.”
“Luke…” Jack said softly.
“Do they want money or something?” I asked.
“Luke!” Ben exclaimed.
“Why do you two just keep saying my name?”
“Will you please just come to dinner with us tomorrow night? Bring Calum!” Ben said.
“Are you sure they won’t quote scripture and splash us with holy water before kicking us out of the restaurant?” I sassed.
“Luke!” Jack said. “Dude, maybe we should just tell him.” He said to Ben.
“Tell me what?” I asked.
“Mom and Dad wanted to meet you.” Ben said. “Because…Mom has breast cancer.”
