Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred and Seventy-Four
~174~
Later that evening, I couldn’t stand to be in the house.
I couldn’t stand to see Julia sit by a window still, just starting blankly.
I couldn’t stand Calum’s sympathetic gazes and comments towards me that I know are masks to his own pain.
I couldn’t stand the twins indulging in their blissful ignorance that we somehow had to find a way to delicately destroy.
Pulling out my phone, I texted Karen asking if she was doing anything. When she said she wasn’t, I told her that I would pick her up in an hour.
Once I picked her up, we took an Uber to a night club.
“Let’s dance.” I said. “And drink.”
After getting in, we went straight to the bar. “Four shots of Malibu.” I said to the bartender, and he promptly took my money while pouring the liquor.
Both of us pounded a shot, and I indulged in the hard liquor that burned my throat on its way down.
“Again!” I said while grabbing the next shot.
“You can have mine!” Karen said, who was already grabbing the edge of the bar for balance.
“Gladly.” I sputtered as I downed both shots back to back.
A warmth morphed all around my chest as I felt the obnoxiously loud EDM music beat through the building.
“Let’s hit the floor!” I half yelled, because it was loud.
Calum was texting me asking me where I was, and I ignored them. I didn’t tell him where I went, but I was ready to forget about my life for just a few hours.
The rest of the night was a masking cocktail of shots and jump dancing on the floor. It ended with a cliché vomit in the backseat of an Uber. Oops.
