Icing on the Cake

Chapter Eleven

~11~

That Monday at school was one of the worst days ever.

During free/lunch period, Calum and I walked over to one of the math classrooms. The teacher, Mrs. P., was in charge of prom and grand march signup. Grand march was one of the only special things about prom, since prom itself is just a gym with loud music.

We walked in, and she greeted us with the same smile she always had. “Hello, boys.” She said.

“Hey.” I responded.

“What can I do for you?” she asked.

“We need to sign up and pay for prom.” Calum said.

“Sure, I’d love to take your money!” Mrs. P. responded. She was always sporting that slightly sarcastic humor. She found herself funny, at least. “It’s ten dollars for a couple, seven dollars for a single. You two are doing…?”

“Couple.” I said. “So we’ll need grand march signup too.”

“Okay, you two are thirty-second for grand march.” Mrs. P. said. I’ll take ten dollars and I’ll give you your tickets.”

Calum gave her ten dollars and she gave us our purple, cardboard tickets. We were officially signed up for prom.

Right as last period was coming to a close that day, both Calum and I were called to the principal’s office.

Calum and I both got to the door at the same time.

“Do you know what this is about?” Calum asked me.

“I have a pretty good guess.” I said back. “This is a Christian high school.”
