Icing on the Cake
Chapter One Hundred Eight
~108~
Kyle explained to us that Brock worked in filing information at the hospital where we took Adam. He must have noticed the immigration discrepancy when we gave them our insurance information.
Kyle also explained that all the evidence he could find was circumstantial, and telling the police was technically the legal thing to do, so we couldn’t bring a hate crime lawsuit against Brock.
But hopefully it was enough to convince Mali.
Calum asked her to come over for lunch one day, alone, and she agreed. The three of us, Calum, Mali and I, were eating lunch on the porch.
“Mali,” Calum started, “The other night when you were here with Brock, he told us that…that one way or another he would take us down. He said this is what we get for ruining your guys’ wedding.”
“What?” Mali asked. “Turning me against you?”
“That.” Calum said.
“But there’s more.” I added.
“What’s the more?” Mali asked.
“Adam fell in the pool a little while back.” Calum explained. “We brought him into the hospital, and someone who worked there, Brock, must have seen that there was a discrepancy in his immigration record. Brock called immigration on us.”
“How do you know it was him?” Mali asked.
“Who else would it be?” Calum asked. “He lied about who he was and tried to marry you for money. He clearly wants to make our lives miserable for some reason. Why do you believe him over me?”
Mali didn’t say anything. “Fine. You’re right.”
Calum leaned over and put his hand on hers. “I don’t want to loose you.”
“I don’t want to loose you either.” Mali said.
After letting them have their moment, I decided to break the silence. “Thank God Mali, because we need your advice on wedding colors.”
“White and raspberry.” Mali said without hesitation. She was right, those were the colors.
Why didn’t I think of that?
