A Nightmare

M I L A

After spend my lunch with Grayson alone and sneaking some texts throughout my class, we had finally reached the end of the day and I was hopping with joy with my date with Grayson as I walking down to the track already changed. I couldn’t help but wonder what the surprise location was for our second date. Never thought there would be a first one, but who knows anything can happen.

After last night, Grayson has made a total transformation. He’s kinder and sweet, less cocky. and actually shows he has a heart. When he’s around me, he’s a little shy, but I found that completely adorable. As I finished running and sat down next to my father, Grayson immediately saw me and smiled causing me to smile back as he went back to throwing the ball.

“What’s for dinner?” He asks, waking me up from my daydream about Grayson. Dinner? But my date with Grayson? Should I cancel? Should I lie? No. No more lying.

“I actually have a date tonight,” I said lowly, but I knew he heard me. His head shot up at the sound of date and I could already tell this wasn’t going to be pretty.

“With.” It wasn’t a question but a demand. I was probably gonna be in so much trouble than I originally anticipated.

“Grayson.” He looked at Grayson with fury coursing through his body and beaming out of his eyes. While Grayson was scarily nervous at him then looked at me for answers, he got tackled by some guy maybe three times his size. I would laugh if I wasn’t in such a serious matter of being killed.

“O’CONNER!” I cringed as his voice rang out through the whole stadium. I hated it when my dad yelled, but rarely I was never the subject of him yelling and I wasn’t ever around for it.

Grayson got up off the ground dazed as he did a slight jog over in our direction. I bit down hard on my thumb, not wanting him to get into serious trouble. “Yes, coach?” He said it shakily. He was probably more nervous than I was.

“Didn’t I tell you to stay away from my damn daughter?!” What? Stay away from me? I was now fully in anger at my dad. Something I haven’t felt in a long time.

“Yes sir.” Grayson looked down at the fake grass on the field.

“How could you?” Grayson and my dad both looked at me. Grayson in shock that I would talk back to my own father. “You told him to stay away from me?” I crossed my arms and cocked my head to the side.

“I told the whole team to stay away from you,” he said in a matter of fact tone as my eyes widen. How long has this been going on?

“Since when do you control who I date?” I place my hands on my hips firmly and sassily, something he said my mom used to do.

“Not here, Mila.” I was already heated and there was no stopping me now.

“Oh, am I ruining your perfect family image?” I asked sarcastically. He was in for it now. How could tell the whole damn football team not to date me? It was completely ludicrous!

“Mila, quit it,” he gritted through his teeth. He wanted to full out give it to me but was holding back.

“No, can you stop? Can you stop being a jackass about who I date?” I noticed there was a small group forming and watching the two of us unravel. “You don’t always have to protect me! I’m not eight anymore!” He knew exactly what I was referencing to.

Mila.” He straightened up as his voice became more stern but it didn’t scare me.

“It’s not my fault that you blame yourself for what happened to mom but I’m not her!” I said bringing up his worst fear. The nightmare he still is reminded constantly by looking at me. After eighteen years of knowing my father, he the unpredictable. He strike me along side my face at full force. Knocking me down, I felt the pain instantly pang in my cheek as I held it for dear life. Feeling a tear roll down my face as I looked up at him, I didn’t bother wiping it away.

“Mila,” He breathed out. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to.” He tried giving me a hand up, but I stubbornly pushed his hands away and got up by myself.

“But you did.” I picked up my bag and ran to my car with tears blocking my vision. My trust for my own father disappeared. Never until now, had he laid a hand on me in a harmful way. I was full of shock, anger, and sadness at the same time.

“Mila!” He called out, but I don’t turn around. I keep running for what seems like forever.

“Mila.” He’s closer now and tugs on my wrist turning me around. Ready to fight my way out of his grip, I notice it’s Harry. “Are you okay?” His eyes were so sincere and full of concern for me. I opened my mouth to talk but words didn’t form from my dry mouth. Instead, I shook my head as tears were fully streaming down my face. “I’mma get you out of here.” I look at him and in the distance, I see my father about ten yards away trying to catch up to us.

He grasped my hand as we ran to his car. Harry opens the door and without any further hesitation, I get in and strap on my seat belt as Harry rushes to the driver’s side and quickly speeds off of campus. In the rear-view mirror, I see my dad becoming smaller and smaller in the distance, trying catch up. I breathed out and closed my eyes, thinking this was all just a horrible nightmare, but it wasn’t.
