Cocaine

Judgmental

The way the midnight Memphis breeze hit against my face, blowing my hair around behind me always reminded me of why I was so used to this place. I knew every road, every street, every building, perhaps almost all the people.

My father is a doctor at St. Jude, he’s an amazing man. That’s where I’m leaving right now. I decided I’d catch a taxi tonight instead of drive home. I was too tired to get behind the wheel.

I stand on the edge of the sidewalk, my converses tied just a tad too tight today. It wasn’t a long wait though.

A yellow taxi pulls up beside me and he nods at me, a sign that I was welcomed to be served by him. I open the back door, holding my purse against my side, it’s a habit, and I get in.

Once I was adjusted to the nice cool air coming for a cracked window, I put my seatbelt on.

‘’Where to, Miss?’’ The man asks me.

‘’Blair Tower, Please.’’ I tell him. He nods back and begins driving. Something shifts beside me and I realize I wasn’t the only person in the car.

I glance over quickly, then try to mind my business. I smell the all-too-familiar smell of a cigarette and its smoke. That’s probably why the window’s down.

I gulp slightly, not too sure if this is safe or not. I’m not trying to be a judgmental person, but this guy seems pretty scary. And if he seems that way, then to me, logically, he’s a bad person.

He clears his throat casually. Thanks to the city lights, I can sorta look at his face and see what he looks like. He’s got a very crisp jaw line, almost perfect.

His lips are that natural nude pink everyone wishes they had. He had an imprint of what was probably dimples in his cheek. Then I caught a glimpse of his lip ring.

The guy also had an earring in. He might have two, but I can only see one right now. I try to look down at my phone as much as possible, acting as if I was waiting on a message or call.

I soon returned to my process of secretly examining this young guy. He might be a little older than me. I’m only nineteen, so I guess he wasn’t far ahead of me.

The lights gave me full visibility of his arms and what little of his chest, thanks to his V-Neck, I can see and I notice the tattoos. They swirl and collide with each other. Some have a little color, others are just pure black. I couldn’t really make out any of the designs though, just a bunch of stuff.

I take a deep breath, slowly release it, and then just keep my eyes looking out my window, and away from the stranger. I can tell that we’re getting close to my apartment building. I recognize the familiar buildings and street signs.

Soon, the taxi driver stops the car and I reach into my purse, getting my money ready. I knew the cost, same as it always it every night and day.

I open the door, putting a leg out like usually. I gather the money, zip my purse back up, and reach for the man’s extended arm towards me.

I was about to drop the money into his hand when the guy stopped me by slightly pushing my hand away.

‘’Go.’’ He mumbles. He had a deep, raspy, British accented voice that almost mad me afraid to disobey his command.

‘’No, I-‘’

He stops me, ‘’Go.. I’ll take care of it.’’ He says, looking over at me.

His eyes are a emerald green, shiny color. They’re beautiful. I get lost in his eyes as I debate on pulling my hand away or not. He stares back at me, curiosity in his eyes, only slightly though.

“I’ll.. pay it.’’ He mumbles, his voice is amazing, but scary at the same time.

‘’No, I can’t let you.. I don’t even kno-‘’

‘’Go.. Its getting really late. You need to be inside.’’ He insists, dropping his hand from mine.

I give up, knowing this will go no where any more. I put the money back in my purse as I step out of the car, my hand on the door, ready to shut it and forget about everything that just happened.

But I don’t.

The guy is turned back to his window, staring at nothing. The driver is patiently waiting on me to leave, but he’s occupied on his phone right now.

I bite my lip slightly before gathering the courage, which I don’t normally have, to say something to this guy.

‘’Hey?’’ I say.

He looks over at me, no words, no expressions, no emotions.

‘’Thanks..’’ I say, a slight smile forming on me face.

He lifts the corner of his mouth gently before turning back to his window. I shut the door and make my way inside, slowly and hesitantly.

I have no clue what just happened. But something has my heart beating fast, my thoughts all twirled up, and my mind confused.

Who was he? And why did he want to do anything for me?
