The Way

Tears

Lux's dress was very much a little mini version of my own. And when I made the mistake of whispering that to Lou, she insisted on seeing it. She wanted to see us both there together with them on.

Harry was there though I he would not be seeing me in it until I walk down the isle of the chuch.

"You will just have to wait."

"Harry can leave."

"What?" Luckily Harry hadn't heard me tell Lou that they look similar. I wanted my dress to be a complete surprise to Harry. I didn't want him to know anything about what I would look like.

"Nothing." I shook my head at him.

"Oh all right." He turned back to Lux who had been playing on the floor with a toy.

"Come on Harry can just like walk home or something and leave you the keys, or he can leave and just come back to pick us up. The possibilities are endless." Suddenly Lux burst out in screams, there were tears water falling from the corners of her eyes. Harry picked her up quickly, but she didn't quiet.

"Shshshsh." He tired calming her. When she didn't stop he tried singing to her. I'd witnessed several occasions where if nothing else would work a quick chorus of a song would stop her. Not this time. When Harry gave up, Lou took her, trying to calm her with her maternal instincts. I'd never been that great with children so I shied away. Keeping out of the way and not suggesting anything in hear of it being the wrong suggestion.

"Here." Lou handed her to me.

"Oh you know how I am, I'm terr-" My eyes met with Lux's. The tears stopped almost instantly. Then her mouth closed silencing her. Her lips curled up as I stared down at her.

"Wow." Lou said. "Sorry Harry, Lexi is my new babysitter. You're out." She joked, I laughed. A small high pitched giggle followed, only to have come from little Lux herself.

I noticed Harry's hold on me. He watched as Lux held tight to one of my fingers and we made silly faces at each other. He let out a laugh and both out head swung to see him looking away from us in the opposite direction with his hand on the back of his neck.

"What?" Lux's eye brows came together in frustration.

"What?" Harry held his hands out and walked to us. He tried to take Lux away from me, but she latched her arms around my neck. He had a hold of her body, but she wouldn't let go. Harry released her back to me where we pretended to be mad at Harry for trying to take her away.

"Harry is silly isn't he?" I asked. She giggled some more. Looking from Harry back to me she began to speak some more.

"You and Harry are getting married?"

"Yup!" Harry felt that was his cue to come join us. He wrapped his arm around my waist.

"Come on Lexi! Just for a moment, I want to see what you two will look like." Lou has still been trying to get me to put on my dress.

"Lux won't let go, lets just get a snack or something." Harry and I started walking away, Lux was still in my arms, Lou followed reluctantly. We bought Lux's dress and then left.

Photographers followed us, trying to get us to answer their questions and get a good shot of us. Lux stayed in my arms, hiding her face in the crook of my neck and clutching tight to Harry's hand. Harry wrapped a protective arm around me, as Lou grabbed tight to his shirt.

After being out side for the few minutes it took us to get to the car, we decided just to go home. There were so many people following us that it just didn't seem safe.

"Did you have fun today?" Lux nodded in response. Her eye lids were droopy and she soon yawned. "Looks like someones ready for a nap." I picked at her side trying to keep her awake for the car ride home. It was good that it wasn't too long.

"Hey thanks for keeping her up for the car ride, it's been a long day, I hope she sleeps well tonight." Lou hugged me when we dropped them off at their house.

"It was good. She is such a sweetheart. No problem at all."

"Thanks again Harry!" She waved to us before entering her house, Lux asleep on her shoulder.
I sat in the passenger seat now, watching out the window at the buildings and trees we passed by. His hand rested in mine, as he drove, keeping his eyes on the road. I was tired, helping a young girl change into dress after dress was difficult and tiring. I felt a yawn come up and out my mouth.

"Tired?"

"I'm dead."

"Good, well then you and i can go for some dinner and then have some sleep."

"Sounds great!" I looked over to him as he kept his eyes on the road.

"You were great with Lux today. I've never seen her act that way around you before."

"It's cause you never let me hold her." I teased.

"Well, I-" He stumbled for words to defend himself. Neither of us spoke for a moment, but I kept my eyes locked on him. "I know it's a bit early, I mean we're not married yet and even so it's early for me to think about this I think, but you're going to make a fantastic mother." He glanced back at me after he finished.

I could feel the color flooding to my face. My lip immediately became clenched between my teeth.

"You really think so?" We haven't talked about children much, other then both of us agreeing to wanting it.

"Of course the way Lux melted in your arms, the way you made her laugh, and how she didn't want me to hold her."

"I must be special."

"Of course you're special." More color came to my face.

We locked eyes for a bit longer, too much longer so I pointed to road to make him pay attention while driving.

I looked ahead as well, just in time to see a semi truck at a stop not far in front of us. Harry's foot slammed on the brakes causing us to lurch forward. It didn't matter though, we didn't see it soon enough, we were too close.

It came so quickly, but in the very same way, time seemed to have slowed. I looked from Harry, whose face was nothing but horror, to the semi in front of us. It was so close now. The crunching of the metal echo in my ears. The shattering of the glass, exploding cutting any exposed skin. The frame of the car was crushed. My neck was flung forward, sharp pains pulsing through it, making me realize the pain from the cuts on my legs.

Harry's hand tightened around mine, telling he was still there.

We screamed as the car stopped moving forward. The hood of the car had come down, preventing me from being able to turn my head to look at Harry. Warm liquid slowly fell down my legs, and some had also started dripping down my face, a bit quicker.

"Harry!" I tried screaming. It didn't come out as loud as I had hoped.

"Stay with me." I heard his muffled voice call.
People flocked the accident, buzzing about Harry. Some were on their phone reporting the accident and calling for an ambulance. I heard an older man yelling about how his truck had better be fine, or he was going to sue.

I heard the distant sounds of sirens making their way to the scene. Instead of the noise getting louder as it should have, I felt cold and dizzy, the sound getting quieter.

"Lexi!" Harry yelled, his grip tightening around my hand. "Lex, come on, you'll be all right. Lexi!" He was crying. A noise and sound I'd neve heard before. It was preventing him from speaking. The volume of everything around me continued to dissolve, my eyes felt heavy falling shut because I couldn't find the strength to keep them open.

"Lexi." Was the last thing I heard before complete darkned and solitude took over.
