Dreams vs. Reality

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Amber's POV

Stepping out of the limo that Chasity somehow got us, we proceed to walk into a dining hall, the blaring music heard from the outside.

“Chasity, how many people did you invite?” I ask astonished, her only shrugging. The bouncer in the front sees us and opens the door wide enough for us.

“Happy birthday, Amber.” He wishes me. I nod my head in response, before following Chasity down a hall.

“A bouncer?” I ask, stepping into the same pace next to her.

“Yes, you will see why in a moment.” she replies, stopping at two grand doors. “Ready?” She asks me. I take a deep breath and nod. She squeals, giving me one last hug before opening the doors. “Ta daaaa!” She yells out.

Multi-colored lights bounced off the walls, chandeliers made of glass hang high on the ceiling, people chatting among themselves, cups in hands, smiles all around. A DJ in one corner of the room, a small stage with a chair in the center on the other, and dancing people in between.

“Jesus… This looks amazing!” I breathe out, taking a slow 360.

“Glad you like it, because now its time to greet the guests!” She links my arm and pulls me behind her, greeting the closest guests, some I didn’t even recognize myself.

“Hey, birthday girl.” A voice calls out, tapping me on the shoulder. I turned around and saw Dylan staring right back at me with a smirk.

“Hey, Dylan.” I smiled softly at him. Chasity comes by my side, telling me that she’s going to go find someone. I nodded before she zoomed away.

“Like the decorations? I did them myself.” He starts the conversation, looking up at the ceiling. I looked up with him to see streamers and balloons, making me wonder how in the world he got up there.

“You did them?” he nods his head.

“Well, thank you. They are lovely.” I thank him. He nods and hands me a wrapped present that I just noticed in his grasp.

“For you.”

“What is it?” I ask, shaking the box.

“I got you a little somethin'.” He shrugs.

“Well, thank you. But you can just leave it at the table with the others.” I point to where I was talking about.

“WILL THE BIRTHDAY GIRL HEAD TO THE STAGE? THANK YOU.” The DJ yells into the mic, cueing me to leave.

“I’ll see you around, enjoy the party. Thank you for the present.” I tell him before walking to where my presence was needed.

Harry’s POV

“Harry, we can’t let you go, okay?” Paul keeps trying to tell me, but I still refuse. The party should have started a half an hour ago, and I’m still here. We would have been done an hour ago but the photographer was having problems with his camera, and once it got fixed, we started back from the beginning, since the footage got deleted in the process. I’ve been trailing behind Paul for that time, where he goes I go and haven’t stopped yet.

“Please Paul. I need to go.” I plead to him.

“Why are you in such a rush all of the sudden Harry? This isn’t like you.” He scolds me. “You know you have work to do.”

“Hey.” I started. “This made me miss my day with Amber when I promised her a date, just her and I. I planned a whole great evening with her before her party. Then we would have gone to the party together, me being her escort inside. I want to be by her side when she blows out her candles, and I could rub some of the frosting on her face. I promise to make it up whenever, but for now, can I please just go early?” I say in one shot, feeling tired.

“Hey, us too!” Zayn calls out from behind me, the rest of the guys following suit.

“Not you guys too…” Paul mutters. We stand together, shoulder to shoulder, arms crossed with the classic pout face. Paul eyes us all for a moment then stays silent, before walking away from us without saying a word, and all our shoulders drop.

“Well, I guess we’re stuck.” Louis quietly states, taking a seat on the nearby couch. With a heavy sigh, I join Louis, my head rolling back.

“This is quite a way to start a relationship…” I mumble, unsure whether I was telling them or myself as I massage my temples.

“She understands, though. She has to get used to this eventually. Might as well start now.” Liam comforts me.

“Yeah, when El and I first started, you remember how sad it was for us. After a couple months, everything will be fine. Smooth sailing.” Louis pats my back, giving my shoulder a gentle squeeze.

“I guess… But I was supposed to take her out today, make it special… Not have her wait at her house for me to never show up. Especially on her 18th birthday! I mean, who does that?!” At this point I was just mumbling profanities into the crook of of my elbow that rested on my head.

“You did.” Niall randomly says, earning a harsh glare from me and slap to the back of his head by Zayn. “Sorry.” He mutters. I shake my head by continue either way.

“Of all days, it had to be today…Really...” At least I didn’t tell her where we were going just to leave her there, she wouldn’t ever want to talk to me again for standing her up. I can just see her puppy face by now. The pout, the eyes, the tears,-- Stop! A knock on the door pulls me out of my thoughts. Liam pats my thigh before standing up to answer the door. with Paul coming back, looking different this time.

“What?” I sighed.

“Alright, you guys can go.” He says. I remove my arm from my face, watching Paul, in case he was about to say ‘Kidding, back to work.’ Didn't happen.

“Seriously?” I ask him, sitting up straight. He nods.

“I spoke with the director, heard what’s up, and felt bad for pulling you guys out on such short notice.” I broke out into a happy smile, jumping onto my feet and running over to Paul, hugging him tightly. “But you have to be back tomorrow afternoon to finish. There’s still a few more things to be done.” He tries to say through my grasp. I let him go, still smiling from ear to ear, looking back at the guys who were cheering and agreeing with Paul.

“I think you guys are going to have to dress a bit better than this, if you want to go to that party…” Lou suddenly said from the doorway, arms crossed.

“Then let’s get going. I want to get out of here as soon as possible.”. We piled out of the room, right behind Lou. I can actually be there with her now.

Amber’s POV

“Amber, are you okay?” He asks me.

“What happened?” I ask, my hand traveling to my head again.

“I don’t know, but you collapsed.”

“Sorry…” I only realized now that we were in a moving car, down a dirt highway as we fell into a small hole in the road.

“What’s going on… Where are you taking me? AM I BEING KIDNAPPED??” I yell out.

“Amber, calm down, no your not, quite opposite, actually.”

“What do you mean? Can you please just tell me what’s going on?”

“Wow, are all sisters like this?” The driver asked. What?

“You alright?” Chasity asks me, nudging me slightly. I shake my head and take in my surroundings, as everyone is with empty plates, sitting down at the nearby tables to me. Chasity is to my right, as other few friends from school to my left; Dylan at the end of the long table. I nod shyly in her direction.

“That’s good. Come on, it’s time to cut the cake, birthday girl.” She tugs my arm to the enlarging crowd around a table. I look down at my phone, the time now 10:00 pm, the party ending at 11. Still nothing from Harry, or the others. I guess they really aren’t coming then...

We walk away from the table, the waiters picking up the plates that were left behind and bringing them to a room in the back, most likely the kitchen. Chasity walks past the table with the cake, disappearing off into the crowd leaving me on my own again.

“Chasity!”

She turns back, waving me off before walking out. My shoulders drop down, as I am alone with the increasingly large crowd, on my own at a table with a pretty tall cake. Which one of them do I cut? Top? Bottom? Middle? All of them? Eh, fuck it. I’ll do the bottom one. I take hold of the cake knife, as the DJ begins to play the introduction to the birthday song, before everyone joins in.

Harry’s POV

“Come on, we don’t have much time, they’re singing Happy Birthday to her now, let’s go!” Chasity appears out of no where, dragging Niall and Lou behind her. Of course we had to bring her along, she said she was okay with not going, but we dragged her out anyways along with Paul who had mutual feelings about coming.

We let Chasity lead the way, telling the bouncer at the door we can come in, before stopping at two large doors. The voices of people singing was being muted by the door, but can still be heard in the hallway as we all quietly sing along.

“Here we go…” She mutters, hand on door handle but was stopped by Zayn who had to be a gentleman and open the door for us.

The large room was only lit in the center of the crowd, no doubt because Amber’s there, being serenaded by all of these people. Speaking of, not to offend, but she knows this many people? There’s probably well over a hundred people, all dressed fancy in floor gowns and tuxes. Thanks to Lou’s call, we are all just as nicely dressed, perfectly blended in. This is just as big, maybe a bit smaller, than the usual special appearances that we would do sometimes. It was crowded, that’s for sure.

“Happy Birthday dear Amber, Happy Birthday to you!!”

We sing along out loud at the end as we walk inside. Cheers and whistles filled our eardrums, soon adding our own into the mix as flashes go off into the center of the crowd. Chasity goes ahead and makes her way through the crowd, leaving a small gap for us to pass through. The crowd chants ‘Make a wish’, before falling silent. Once we got to the center, I saw her blow out the candles with a big smile. The crowd cheers with excitement just as Amber begins to cut the tiers of the cake.

“Alright, this one is chocolate.” She takes out a slice from the top layer. “This one is… Vanilla? I wanna say so…” She chuckles awkwardly. “And this one is a mix of both.”

She takes a slice of cake from the bottom tier and puts in on her plate. She gets help from the nearby waiters to slice the cake. Once she has her chocolate slice, she wanders away from the table to make room for the guests to take their slice.

This gave me a chance to really take a good look at her dress. It was a beautiful shade of red, a high low that extended to her white high heeled feet and a couple inches on the floor behind her. Her hair has the perfect curls down to her chest, bouncing as she takes a step. With her light makeup on, she looks like an Angel.

“Stop drooling and go say hi to her.” Chasity pats my back after closing my mouth. I smile at her before making my way to Amber, only to pause and to watch intently as a familiar person walks up behind her.

Amber’s POV

I made my way out through the crowd, still thinking I can find the head of curls somewhere, but none to be found. I head over to my purse that I set down on my chair from dinner, seeing no notifications on my phone either. I am now determined that they aren’t coming… That’s alright… I guess. Sometimes I forget that they are a really popular band when it comes to this. They won’t have time for much freedom, as they usually work. Speaking of, I should really start finding a new job…

“Hey, did you pick out the cake?” Dylan asks me from behind. I turn to face him, and shrugged.

“I didn’t get to do the taste test. Chasity did it for me, since she knew what I liked, disliked, etc.” I placed my phone back in my purse, setting it down on the seat once more, before taking my slice of the cake and trying it. “Does it taste bad?” I ask before bringing a piece to my mouth. He shakes his head and does the same. I hum at the taste, Chasity does know my kind of chocolate. I take a few steps in front of him, eyes on the table with drinks. I knew I should have taken one.

“C’mere for a sec? I wanna take a picture with the birthday girl.” He stops me, by taking hold of my upper arm, causing me to turn back to him, my hair gliding in the air as they turn after.

Well, I can’t say no, but I can’t think why he is talking to me so much all of the sudden, where is Chasity?? Taking our plates and setting them down on the table, reaching for my wrist and tugging me through the large crowd to the dance floor, looking back from time to time, probably to make sure I wasn’t lost inside.

Once we get to where there is more lighting, taking his phone out and snaps a couple pictures of us. He then takes a step back and takes a couple solo pictures of me. I stand there awkwardly, unsure how I will turn up in the photos and how he wants me to pose. Do I look away from the camera, or look directly?

“Alright, let’s take one more.” He leads the way once more, making me feel a bit nervous now. Something doesn’t feel right. “By the DJ, yeah?” He confirms to me. We head up to the tower, the guard at the base of the staircase letting us pass. We soon get to the DJ after taking so many steps up, who was all smiles when I arrived.

“Hey, it’s the birthday girl, happy birthday!” He exclaims, taking me in his arms for a quick hug.

“Thank you, you’re doing great up here.” I compliment as I look down from our height. This tower is pretty tall.

“Aren’t you such a sweetheart?” He pats my head, reminding me of Harry. He calls me sweetheart.

Oh, Amber quit it. It’s only been about 24 hours since you’ve been dating, stop with this nonsense. Besides, you haven’t even gone to a date yet. You’re still in the awkward state of the relationship, okay?

I sometimes hate my conscious...

“Isn’t she?” Dylan agrees, draping his arm on my shoulder, bringing me back to reality. Uh, okay. No. I slowly get out of his grasp, letting his arm fall back to his side.

“I’m glad you like the playlist. Are you requesting a song?” He asks me.

“No, we’re here to take a picture with you, is that alright?” I ask.

“Ahh, of course, come on! You’re taking the picture?” He asks Dylan. He nods in response and takes out his phone, taking a couple pictures. After he was done, Dylan looks out to the crowd, before handing the camera to me.

“Take a picture of us, Sweetheart?” He asks using the nickname again, making me cringe. I take the phone cautiously, before pointing it at them.

“Smile!” I say, and Dylan pulls a frown. I set down the phone, about to ask what was wrong.

“Let me take that for you.” A voice says from behind me, large hands removing the phone from my grasp.
