Love Don't Die

Chapter 5

We wandered for awhile on the streets of London until arriving at a 24 hour sci-fi film festival. We went inside and started to watch pointless films on aliens and astronauts until finally passing out. I was awoken by a laser-beam fight between a dinosaur and a giant tarantula, and nudged Harry with my shoulder to awaken him.

“What?” He mumbled, his eyelids still heavy.

“I’m fucking hungry. Can we get some food?” I looked at my phone and saw a text from Rusty. I let her know I was alive and checked the time. “C’mon, Styles. It’s 1 o’clock in the afternoon and I want something greasy.” I was now shaking the stubborn Harry Styles to try and get him to wake up.

“Fine, fine! Let me take a piss first.” He got up and walked outside to the bathrooms. I followed and smoked a cigarette in the lobby while I waited. One of the acne-prone teenage attendants gave me a dirty look, so I flipped the twat off and blew my smoke in her direction. Harry emerged from the loo and I had him follow me outside. We stopped at an outdoor food stand and ordered a basket of chips and two beers. We sat on one of the cliché red and white checkered tables and people watched in the afternoon sun.

“So what’s it like to be Toni?” Harry asked while he squeezed tomato ketchup onto the side of the tray.

“Fucking amazing, how else would it be?” I looked him straight in the eye as I drank my beer. Who the fuck did he think he was? Did he think I was going to tell him all my problems and then we could snuggle about it afterwards? Fat fucking chance. He shook his head and smiled, and we remained quiet as we ate. After an awkward five minutes, Harry broke the silence.

“She’s a weird one in bed.” He pointed to a girl across the street in polka dot shorts and a beige top. Her hair was blonde and wavy, and she wore cat-eye sunglasses.

“Wow, you really get around don’t you?” I pondered while I grabbed a chip from the basket.

“You have no filter, do you?” he laughed. I shrugged and ate another.

“Anyways, she’s a real piece of work. The entire time she sounded bored out of her mind, almost like she was faking it. ‘Oh. Yes. Come on. I’m so wet. Please, more. Yes.’” I laughed at his robot-like impersonation and hit his shoulder. Laughing back he continued, “I’m serious! She sounded so miserable! I wanted to crack up throughout the whole thing. She’s mental. At least she let me finish.” I admired his vulgarity. I could tell he didn’t really let this side of him show much, and it was remarkably quite charming.

“You’re not what everyone makes you out to be, are you?” I stared at his perfectly constructed face.

“And you are?” And with that he rose out of his seat and walked away from the table.

“Here,” Harry handed me his phone as we stood in front of the current hotel Rusty and I were living in. “Put your number in and I’ll let you know if I find any good piss ups later.” I stared blankly at the phone in my hand.

“New contact,” I spoke at the weird device. It did nothing but showed me a black screen and I looked up to find Harry laughing. “Cause damage,” I spoke into it again and smacked Harry on the head with it. Not amused, his thumb danced across the screen and he handed the phone back to me.

“Here, babe, just type in your number now.” I did as I was told and he took his phone back. “Do you, like, live in hotels or something?” He gazed up at the building in front of us with questioning eyes and I shrugged my shoulders.

“Basically. Rusty wants to get a place but I don’t know…” I trailed off and looked at the new scuff marks that had appeared on my shoes. Truth was, I was afraid to buy a flat. It seemed like so much effort and upkeep, and I just liked trashing hotel rooms and leaving the bill to be paid by random strangers’ stolen credit cards.

“You should. Hotel rooms can get pretty boring after a while. Trust me, I would know.” There he was being cocky again. A smirk formed on my face as I thought of an idea.

“Oh, if only I was as famous as you HARRY STYLES!” I yelled his name and heard a couple of girls nearby squeal as they saw him. I bowed before entering the hotel and laughed as I saw a crowd form around the lad as I got into the elevator.

Entering the room, I saw Rusty was stuffing her face with eggs and toast by the window. She looked as she always did after a good party – hungover but beautiful.

“Your little boyfriend is getting mobbed by cunts outside,” she noted as she put more jam on her toast.

“He’s not my fucking boyfriend,” I spat as I took off my clothes, “just a good fuck is all.” She laughed and I went into the bathroom to shower. When I emerged, all our things were packed and Rusty looked panicked.

“We need to fucking go!” She was shoving clothes into bags and checking under the bed. I quizzically looked at her while I fluffed my hair with a towel. “Now, Tone!” She threw a dress at me and I quick put it over my head. As she pushed me out the door, she explained what was happening. “The fucking front desk called up and said the credit card they had on file wasn’t working. They said they needed to further investigate or we needed to give them another card. So, being the logistic woman I am, I figured we’d fuck off down the emergency stairs to save our asses.” I nodded in agreement as we flew down each flight of stairs until reaching a door that led to the back alleyway of the hotel. Covering our faces with bags, we hopped into my car and drove away. The ride was silent as I tried to get as far away from the hotel as possible with Rusty was texting someone on her phone.

“Maybe we should get a flat,” I mumbled hoping she hadn’t heard me.

“Wait, are you serious?” She turned her head towards me with a smile spread across her face. Fuck.

“I mean, if you want to, yeah. I’m kind of sick of sleeping in a different bed every night.” That wasn’t a total lie – my back was becoming a bit achy from going from soft to firm to soft mattresses every couple of days. Plus, maybe a flat would do me good…make me feel like I finally had a place to call home.

“Yes I fucking want to! Find us the nearest library so we can start searching for places!” I did as I was told and parked in front of an old building with books on the sign. We walked into the eerily quiet foyer and found an open computer. We decided on the criteria we were looking for and after scrolling through what seemed like 900 fucking pages, we found a nice place in Dickens Yard that was modern and classy.

“Shit, Toni, that’s a lot of money,” Rusty gasped as she pointed at the price of the flat on the screen.

“Not a problem,” I said as I pulled out my cell phone. Dialing a number that I dreaded was even in my phone in the first place, I put the phone to my ear and listened to it ring.

“Antoinette? How are you, darling? Mummy misses you,” my mother cooed into the phone. I rolled my eyes and pinched Rusty who was listening in and laughing at my full name.

“Fine, mum. I need to ask you something. Rusty and I are looking into getting a flat together, but the price is a little steep so I was wonder—“ my mother cut me off.

“You’re looking for a home? Oh, darling, mummy is so proud! It’s so nice to see you growing up! Just send me the website of the flat and I’ll work everything out with your father. We can find a way for you to work this off later.” I bit my tongue as to not say anything offensive.

“Thanks, mum. I really appreciate this, and just let me know if you need anything.” I gulped before saying the last thing I knew I needed to say. “I love you.”

“Oh, mummy loves you, too! I’ll call you when everything is in order. Kiss kiss!” My mother hung up the phone and I slammed mine shut.

“Wow, your mum will do anything, eh? Lucky bitch.” Rusty gave me a pouty face as I sent an email to my mother.

“My mum will do anything because she’s trying to suck up to me after being such a shitty parent. It’s not luck – it’s bribery.” I closed out of the website and logged off the computer. I felt my phone buzz with a text from mother dearest saying Got the website. Looks absolutely ravishing! I’ll have to visit xx. Oh my fucking God. I showed Rusty the text and she busted out laughing. “Fuck you! If she visits I will set myself on fire.” Rusty continued to laugh so I knocked her off the stool she was sitting on. The librarian gave us a dirty look so we took that as a sign to fuck off.

When we got back to my car, I got another text. Thinking it was from my mother again, I asked Rusty to read it.

“Ooh!” she exclaimed as her eyes scanned the text. “It’s from Harry! He said there’s a good party tomorrow if you want to join him. Supposed to be a cokefest.” I began to wonder if Harry did drugs like we did. Sure, he had access to them, but did he use them? If not then that sure is a fucking waste.

“Tell him I’ll see him then. But don’t put any smiley faces or whatever the fuck you do when you send texts. I’m not a fag, thanks.” She punched my arm as I stuck my tongue out at her. “So where are we going? We don’t have anywhere to live at the moment.”

Rusty bit on her thumbnail as she thought. “Poppy has an extra bedroom we could stay in. She’s always offering it to me.” Before I could protest she stuck her hand over my mouth. “No, Toni. It will only be for a few days. Plus, you can yell at her for what happened with Peter.” I dropped my shoulders in defeat and nodded in agreement. It would be nice to bitch Poppy out for the fucking perv she set me up with. I started my Mini-Cooper and began to drive away.
