Winthrope Abbey

Audrey was excited for her first class, PE. She couldn’t wait to get some of this nervous energy out from the first day.She made her way to the gym and found a note on the door, “Students, we will be meeting on the field next to the small pond for today’s class,” it read.

As she turned to head to the field she almost ran into another student. Audrey looked up at him, “Looks like class has moved,” she said. She noticed he looked a lot older than most of the boys here, like almost well into his twenties older.

“So it would appear.” He replied before walking off. Audrey walked behind him not saying much; if there was anything she learned from the other girls’ experiences with the boys here it was that they were not too friendly, so she didn’t want to get on anyone’s bad side.

They continued to walk in silence until they reached the field. Audrey’s eyes got wide as she noticed all the soccer balls. Yes! Football!, She thought. If there was anything she knew better than anyone else it was this game, and she couldn’t wait to outdo the boys.Audrey heard a whistle, “Boys and girl please line up.” She walked over and stood next to the boy she had been walking behind earlier.

“I am Coach Avery, and today we will be playing a game you should all know well.” The coach said while walking down the line. “I would like to think one of you should impress more than the others.” Coach Avery stopped in front of Audrey, “Isn’t that right Miss Clark?”

“I hope so Coach Avery.” She blushed, their coach/teacher was quite cute and he looked young as though he had just left university.

“Well, you’ll just have to show us then.Now you will pair off and do a few drills to warm up before we play a match.” Audrey looked around as everyone grabbed a partner, she knew no one would chose her so she waited until everyone else was paired.

“Maybe we should be partners.” The boy from earlier said. “I’m Liam by the way.”

“Audrey”

“Oh I know, your father was my favorite player as a kid.”

“When was that twenty years ago.” Audrey said under her breath, commenting on his mature look.

“Not quite that old, love.Just mature for my age.” He said catching on to her remark.

“Shall we start?”

Audrey placed the ball in front of her and passed it to Liam. Then Liam passed it back to her and they repeated until it began to take a hypnotic pattern.They continued to do this for what seemed like forever, not saying one word to the other.

A whistle blew again taking them out of their hypnotic state. “Alright enough warming up, lets pick sides shall we. Mr. Conner and Mr. Payne will you be our captains?”

“Yes Coach.” They replied in unison.

“Okay, to decide who will pick first chose a number between 1 and 100.” Coach Avery said pointing to James Conner first.

“12”

“Mr. Payne, your number?”

“78”

“The number was 15, so Mr. Conner will chose first.”

“Robert” James said.Audrey watched as a blonde curly haired boy walked over to James.

“Audrey” Liam said.

“What?”

“I’m choosing you, Audrey.” Liam repeated.

“Oh right.” She walked over to Liam.She was surprised to be picked second, she just knew she was going to be last.

The boys finished picking their teams and the game began.Audrey could feel her adrenaline pumping as she ran along the field with the other boys.She loved this game and was getting into the intensity of it.“Audrey, pass it here.” She passed the ball to the guy on her team and watched him head towards the goal. He then passed the ball to another teammate, who took a shoot and she watched the ball bounce off of the goal and land in front of one of the other team’s players.Her competitiveness came over her and she ran after the ball and the boy kicking it down field.

She was so into the game that she wasn’t paying attention to what was going on around her.She just focused on getting the ball back to her goal to score. The other boy kicked the ball to another team member but over shot him and the ball went sailing past him.Audrey ran as fast as she could after it and so did Liam.

“I’ve got it.” Liam told her, but she wasn’t listening.

SPLASH!

They both landed into the pond next to the playing field.Audrey came up out of the water gasping.

“I said I had it.” She heard an angry Liam yell.

“Sorry, I didn’t hear you.”

“Christ, this water is freezing.” Liam got himself out of the water and turned around. Audrey lifted up her hand thinking he was going to help her out.

“I wouldn’t have picked you if I’d known how much of a ball hog you were.” Liam said ignoring her extended hand.

“Excuse me?” She questioned helping herself out.

“If you weren’t so busy trying to play by yourself, maybe you could have prevented this.” He gestured toward the pond.

“You were chasing after it too.” Audrey told him.

Liam opened his mouth to say something, but Coach Avery arrived with the rest of the class. “Are we alright?” He asked.

“Fine.” They both said annoyed.

Audrey went to step forward to move away from Liam when she stumbled.Coach Avery held her up by her arm. “Are we sure we’re fine, Miss Clark?” Coach questioned again.

“I think I hurt my ankle.” She said wincing at the pain.

“Do you need to see the nurse?”

“No.” She said trying to stand on it then falling again.

“Mr. Payne will you take her to the nurse.”

Liam sighed “I suppose I can.”

“Thank you.”

“Come on Audrey, let’s leave before you cause any more trouble.” Audrey placed her arm around Liam shoulder as he helped her walk toward the school.

Seems the first day was not going to be so great after all.
