Winthrope Abbey

Chapter 16

When the Stars Align: Romeo and Juliet Coming to Winthrope Abbey

Written by, Evelyn Milburns

For the first time in school history, Winthrope Abbey’s Drama department will be performing with both Actors and Actresses. Yes you read correctly. Our schools first co-ed production will make its debut in early December. For four nights Winthrope’s own will be performing the very iconic play, Romeo and Juliet. Considered to be Shakespeare’s most recognizable works, which should be an impressive feat for the talented performers.

I recently sat down with some of the stars and got their take on what it means to be in Romeo and Juliet.

Harry Styles, starring as Romeo, told me how important the play was. He even told me what it meant to him saying, “To me this love story is romantic because they give everything to it including their own lives; but it’s a tragedy because they don’t get a happy ending.” He also spoke about how vulnerable they are due to their age, “…they aren’t jaded to love…their hearts [aren’t] guarded.” Seems to me Mr. Styles gets the play and it’s no wonder he is Romeo; but as for his co-star, some were shocked.

“I couldn’t believe Sophia Allaway is going to be Juliet,” said Winthrope student Ivy Wescott, “How can Mr. Doris believe he can pull off a very extraordinary British play with an ordinary American.” She wasn’t the only one to fell this way about the news. Sophia’s very own “Romeo”, Harry, shard his thoughts on Mr. Doris’ choice. After asking him how he felt about Sophia starring as Juliet and not Penelope George, he humbly answered about how it was not his decision but Mr. Doris’, “Clearly Mr. Doris felt differently. He chose Sophia because he believes she’ll do the best job.” Obviously Harry chooses to take the high road by acknowledging his respect for Mr. Doris’ decision, but an inside source reveals that he personally does not want Sophia as his Juliet. Now sources have told me that he had hoped Penelope would land the lead.

When I spoke to Penelope about being in the play she said, “I’m just honored to be a part of it. It’s a great moment to be a cast member in such a beloved play. I can only wish the best for Sophia, and I will support her in any way she needs.” As for Sophia’s views on her role I asked if she felt lucky to have been given the part, “Lucky? I don’t know about lucky. I would say that it’s what’s required of me for the play, so I’ll do it but I won’t say lucky.” Sounds to me like someone isn’t very grateful for the opportunity. We’ll just have to wait to see what happens.

Notes

Sorry for the long wait. I've been super busy with work and university so my updates might be slower than usual.

This might be one of my favorite chapter's that I've posted so far. Oh and Evelyn is worse next chapter because the next chapter is the article she wrote about the play. She's less than nice in that.

Sorry I miss spoke it's the chapter after this one.

LOVE annoyed Harry ;)
