Not so Bad

Nut job

Green. Blinding green. The pale green was light but striking. It made Sadie do a double take. They were the stranger's eyes. She quickly disconnected her eyes with his and hastily scrambled to her feet. The pavement gained her interest, as she began to walk away.

“No sorry, really?” She heard a low voice say behind her. She stopped in her tracks unable to move. She still faced away from the man, with her eyes trained on the ground.”Are you deaf or something?” The voice asked sounding annoyed. Although the voice was obviously quite annoyed at her, she still found its low tone, and rich European accent almost comforting. She still couldn’t move her legs to face the stranger or even make an escape. “Excuse me,” the voice said, sounding even more impatient. Sadie really wanted to run, but her feet betrayed her as she hesitantly turned around to face him. “Look at me,” the voice commanded. Sadie didn’t look at him because she was slightly intimidated, nope not at all. She finally got a good look at him. He was tall, though so was she. He was dressed in a bright colored shirt that hurt her eyes, and black skinny jeans that looked like paint on his tan skin. He had brown curly hair and a beautifully sculpted face. He also had those almost magical green eyes, that first caught her attention. Sadie swears he looks like he was handcrafted by God himself. Sadie felt slightly self-conscious which is something she has never felt before, she doesn’t like it.

“So…?” Green eyes said expectantly.

“So…,” Sadie replied, surprised at her own high pitched voice. She wasn’t expecting to speak but something just felt natural. “Are you serious,” Sadie was taken aback by his tone. “Dead,” she responded. Once again she startled herself. This is the most she’s spoken to anyone besides Mary in months. It feels as if her mouth has a mind of its own. “Someone's in a bad mood,” Green eyes said smirking. All these emotions became far too overwhelming for Sadie to handle. She felt almost ambushed by all this unwanted attention. The sudden need to know the stranger overpowered her.“What’s your name!” Sadie blurted out unexpectedly. Her voice was loud and hoarse. The stranger’s smirk fell off his face, and he looked startled. “I-I didn’t mean for it to come out like that,” Sadie whispered under her breath. Sadie saw something twinkle in his eyes. It was mesmerizing. It was also too overwhelming. She couldn’t stay here and be embarrassed. She turned and quickly dashed down the street in the opposite direction of the man.

“What a nutjob,” she heard the man murmur to himself.

She sprinted all the way back to her small cottage of a house and slammed the door shut. Panting, Sadie slid down onto the ground from the door. Tears stung the corners of her eyes. No no no! Why is she crying? She hasn’t cried since she broke her arm in ninth grade. Why did she care that the stranger called her nutjob? I mean, after all, he was the one being unnecessarily rude to her. Tears were now fully streaming down her face. She looked up to see her mother standing over her looking emotionless. As soon as Sadie’s watering blue eyes met with her mother’s grey ones, her mother turned and left, pretending not to have seen Sadie in the first place. A new type of hurt shot through Sadie, one that she had been neglecting for far too long. Her parents thought she was a disappointment. She knew for a fact that they wanted a boy because she heard them discussing it late one night. It wasn’t just her gender that disappointed them, it was Sadie herself. She never spoke more than a few yeses and nos to them, and showed a lack of interest in all the things they cared about. Sadie was a major disappointment.
