Twenty Five.
"Hey." I heard someone say in my ear.
I opened my eyes startled to see Kaine face to face with me.
"Could you get a little closer next time?" I asked rubbing my eyes.
"You wish." she laughed. "Wanna go get breakfast?"
"Yeah, give me like ten minutes." I nodded sitting up.
I peeked at my phone seeing it was 10. I must've fallen back asleep on the couch after I got out of Kaine's bed. I grabbed a pair of shorts out of my duffle and slipped them on then went into the bathroom to see what we were working with.
"What time's the ceremony at?" I called with my toothbrush hanging out of my mouth.
"Not until 4." she said.
"Good, I've gotta fix this hair after." I said.
I grabbed my Patagonia hat out of my bag along with my wallet and we were ready to go. The morning sun was hot already but it was truly a beautiful day. There were no clouds in the sky and there was a light breeze in the air. There were still a few puddles from the storm last night but most were already dried up. I pulled open the garage door and hopped up in the Jeep pulling it out and waiting for Kaine to meet me outside.
"Good thing you pulled in the garage last night." she said.
"There was one time I was upstate with H and we took the doors off that day and we got caught in a huge rainstorm coming back into the city and we were totally soaked. I've learned my lesson, believe me." I said.
I pulled out of the driveway following the directions Kaine pulled up on her phone to the place we should go. I turned up the radio when we got onto the open roads and put on my sunglasses. The wind was blowing through her hair and after several failed attempts of smoothing it back she just let it go wild. Her smile was infectious and the sun on her face just made her look that much more lively. I sped along the back roads looking over at her from time to time. She was just enjoying every second of this.
"What?" she asked catching me looking at her at a stoplight.
"Nothing." I shrugged hiding a smile.
"Really, what is it?" she asked again.
"Your hair is just a total wreck right now, it's amazing." I laughed.
"Shut up." she said rolling her eyes. "You wore that shirt to sleep last night didn't you?"
"You don't know that." I said trying to hide the truth.
"I saw that stain on your shoulder when I got up in the middle of the night. You can't hide that." she laughed.
"Can't get anything past you now can I." I said speeding up again.
She woke up in the middle of the night so she obviously knew I was in bed with her almost the whole night. She was blowing her own cover now actually. I couldn't believe she didn't kick me out of there.
We had our breakfast then head back over to the house to start getting ready for the wedding. I hopped in the shower in a desperate attempt to fix my hair so I could look presentable. I tied a towel around my waist and opened up the door where Kaine was patiently waiting for me to come out.
"It's all yours in there." I said trying to get around her.
"Let me do your hair again?" she asked.
"When did you do my hair in the first place?" I asked.
"Thanksgiving, come on, let me just do it." she said.
"It's a little shorter this time, I got it cut like a week ago." I said.
"Don't make excuses, you're gonna look good." she prodded further.
"Can I put pants on first?" I laughed at her.
"I'll let ya." she said.
Kay took a brush and pulled all my dark hair off my forehead like she did once before making it look a little extra fluffy. Once she was done drying it she grabbed some hair wax out of her bag and styled it to keep it in place.
"Alright, now you're good to go." she said.
"Not embarrassed to be seen around me now, yeah?" I asked.
"You'd even look okay in your stained pajamas now." she laughed.
I did a quick touch up on my button down with the iron then started suiting up. Kaine was in the bathroom fixing her and hair and makeup not even dressed yet.
"Can you get my top button here?" I called to her.
"Yeah I got ya." she said walking in and grabbing the collar.
"H must have a skinnier neck than me." I joked.
"They're tough to get, I always had to button my dad's when I was younger." she said fixing it up.
Kaine draped the skinny tie around my neck for me to tie up and dismissed herself back to the bathroom. Harry's suit fit pretty well for being custom tailored to him. I mean, there's no way Saint Laurent could make a shitty suit. He would kill me if I got anything on it tonight. I stood in front of the mirror and tied the tie up until I was satisfied with the dimple in it. I put the suit coat on and felt something in the breast pocket in my way. There were Kaine's dad's old glasses again. H must've slipped them in there so I could complete the look. I looked down at my phone seeing it was 3:20 and we would have to get a move on.
"Almost ready?" I called to Kaine through the bathroom door.
"Yeah, I'll be out in a sec, it's only like a 5 minute walk to the venue." she said back.
"Alright, I'm gonna wait out front. Lock up." I said.
"Okay." she called back.
I stood out in front of the little house and looked down at my phone. I texted Harry thanking him again for the suit and promised him to count the compliments I might get. I checked my work email quick hoping nothing too important was there seeing as my last day official day was on Friday. All my clients knew I was leaving now so they were getting redirected to Van's email but still had a dozen questions a piece. There was an email confirming a flight I decided to take on a whim out to Ireland as well. I decided I'd go home for a few weeks while I wasn't working because who knew when I'd get back there again. I had to be back for Shane's wedding in the middle of June so I decided I'd extend my stay, surprise my Ma. The door to the house opened and then closed and I looked up to see Kay walking out.
"Holy fuck." I said louder than I should've.
Kay walked out wearing a low cut, long black dress that showed off her figure. It flared out just below her hips letting the fabric flow down to the floor. She had on a gold body chain under the dress and earrings for her jewelry and her hair was curled back to show her face which had just enough makeup.
"It's a good thing I'm so flat chested or I'd never be able to wear this dress." she joked trying to ease the inevitable sexual tension that was building, it didn't help.
"Shit, you look stunning." I said after a few more seconds of looking her over.
I couldn't help it from coming out of my mouth. She looked incredible I couldn't stop looking at her. She had to know how great she looked. I wasn't gonna stop going on about how great she looked for a year, at least.
"Thank you Niall. Not so bad yourself." she smiled. "I see Dad's glasses made it out here too then."
"I'm under dressed aren't I?" I asked.
"Not at all, it's black tie optional." she said.
"But you've got to come out looking like that." I shook my head. "I can't even look at ya."
"I'll take that as a compliment?" she asked.
"You sure as hell should." I said.
"Thank you then." she said.
She started walking past me and I saw that the dress also had a low back. She looked so incredibly classy and glamorous and of course, sexy as hell. How was I supposed to behave myself.
We walked a little less than a mile down the path to get to the venue. Kaine's friend Delaney was marrying a man named Richard who they went to college with as well. I was nervous to meet her friends, I couldn't lie. Did they even know that I was going to be here instead of Everett? Did they know I existed even? Would they like me? I had so many questions. Did I mention I was nervous?
The ceremony was set to take place inside the clubhouse at the Maidstone Country Club and there was a tent pitched outside for the reception. Not just a tent, a huge tent. These guys must have some rich ass parents to be able to get married in a place like this.
"So, is Delaney like your age getting married or did she graduate ahead of you?" I asked.
"She was a senior when I was a freshman." Kaine explained as we walked inside the clubhouse.
"How'd you get to know her then?" I asked.
"Just through friends." she shrugged and took a glass of wine off a tray.
"Oh my god, oh my god Kaine? Is that you!" someone nearly yelled from about three feet away. "I cannot believe you made it!"
"I live less than two hours away now, it'd be a shame if I didn't show up." Kay said handing me her wine and wrapping her arms around the girl. "Jo, this is Niall." she said after pulling back.
"Hey, nice to meet you!" Jo said shaking my hand.
"Hi there." I said politely.
"Kaine you look absolutely amazing." she said looking her over.
"Not as great as you, how have you been? Have you seen Alyssa yet?" she asked her all in one breath.
"She was just right here, I'm sure she'll be back any second. I've gotta get back there though, I snuck away to touch up my makeup in the bathroom before the ceremony started." Jo said.
"Alright good luck then! Don't trip walking down." Kaine said and hugged her again.
"See you two later." she waved. "It was nice to meet you Niall!"
"You too." I politely waved back.
Jo retreated back to the place the rest of the bridal party was in. We found a seat on the left side of the aisle and scooted our way in. There were hundreds of seats in here, I didn't know it was possible to know this many people. Maybe the girl had a big family, or maybe the guy did. It was just going to be very overwhelming. I scanned the room and instantly felt like an old man. All of these people seemed so young, they were all like kids. I felt like I belonged with the older generation not these people who were hardly out of college.
"No fucking way." said another person approaching from behind us.
Kaine turned around and her face lit up brighter than I'd seen it in a while.
"Didn't think you'd see me here, huh?" she said smiling huge.
"Stand the fuck up and hug me!" the girl said holding out her arms.
"Oh my god I missed you!" Kaine said standing and squeezing her tight.
"Kaine, oh my god. You look stunning! Holy shit it's been like two years but it feels like a lifetime." the girl gushed.
"It's been way too long. We can never, ever, go this long without seeing each other again. Dear god you look amazing yourself." Kay said finally pulling back to look at the girl.
"Deal." the girl confirmed.
"Niall." Kay said getting my attention and I stood up. "This is my best friend in the whole world, Alyssa." she enthused.
"It's a pleasure, I'm Niall." I said holding out my hand.
"You are just as sweet as she said you were." Alyssa said ignoring my hand and going straight in for a hug.
"Now how is it you've heard about me but I've never heard about you? Or frankly anyone here." I asked glancing at Kaine.
"That's an excellent question now isn't it." she said looking over at her as well. "How is it that Niall has never heard about me and the rest of our sisters?"
"No fucking way." I said biting my lip trying to stifle a laugh.
"Because I knew he'd never let me live it down that I was in a sorority in college." Kaine said groaning. "Alyssa's my big, Jo's hers, Delaney's hers, it goes on and on. Everyone in this wedding is one of my Tri-Delt sisters."
"She's still keeping secrets to this day now isn't she?" Alyssa said nudging me.
"Oh you wouldn't believe it." I laughed.
"You guys enough!" Kaine said blushing like mad.
"And, I'm just gonna take a wild guess here, Everett has no idea that he's at this wedding with you, right?" she prodded.
"Enough!" she reiterated.
"She never wants to come to anything having to do with the sorority I cannot believe you're showing your face at this wedding!" Alyssa laughed.
Of fucking course Kaine was in a sorority. She was never, ever going to live this down. It was going to be hilarious watching her react with all of these girls who were her so-called "sisters." My night was about to turn around getting to watch her act like a college girl again. Her and Alyssa just talked each others ears off while we waited around.
It was quite funny I had never heard Alyssa's name mentioned once. Not even see her name cross Kaine's phone. I couldn't understand for the life of me why she had to be so secretive about everything. Sure, I think it's pretty dumb to have been in a sorority but why in hell didn't she tell me that she had friends from college, or in the beginning about her family at all.
"Dan!" Alyssa called across the loud room waving a guy over. "This is him. This is my Daniel." she said lovingly pulling herself into his body when he came close. "This is my dearest Kaine."
"So great to finally meet you." he said smiling at her.
"You too!" Kaine said enthusiastically.
I had seriously never seen her more upbeat in the last ten months I've known her for.
"And Dan, that's Niall." Alyssa said introducing us and then going back to talking to Kaine.
"Hey." I said shaking his hand.
"Irish, huh?" he said stating the obvious.
"Yeah, I've been stateside ten years now. Basically a New Yorker." I laughed.
"I only root for Ireland's rugby team." he said.
"Good thing, me too." I said earning a laugh from him.
"You know anybody at this wedding?" Dan asked me.
"Not a soul. Only Kaine." I shrugged.
"Me neither. I try not to tag along to too many of these things." he said.
"I'm too old for sorority girls now." I agreed making us both laugh.
Finally 4 o'clock came and the four of us sat down in the seats. The procession seemed like it took years and years to wrap up. I counted the bridesmaids in my head while they walked past me, there were twelve. I peaked at the leaflet trying to figure out who was who but I couldn't figure out who was a biological sister of the girl and who was one of her "sisters." The grooms side was equally as large and I couldn't imagine how the photographer was supposed to fit all these people in the wedding photos. Plus there had to be at least 350 guests attending. The ceremony seemed like it took less time than the procession but at least it was short and sweet.
We were told to head out to the clubhouse deck for cocktails before the reception actually began. I was introduced to no less than 40 girls that were all apparently Kaine's friends who were all incredibly high energy. I wouldn't be able to remember anyone's name by the end of this night and the open bar sure wasn't going to help. Kaine and I snapped a photo together in front of some flowers on the deck so she could send it to her mom and I must say we made a handsome couple together. I didn't dare post anything that I was out of town with Kay in fear that Everett would see and absolutely flip shit on the both of us. But at least I had the nice picture to look at.
I took a seat and watched as Kaine made her way around talking to her friends and laughing with them. There had to have been at least two dozen other women wearing black, floor length gowns, but she was without a doubt the most captivating of them all. I felt incredibly out of place here and slightly under dressed. All the men had bow ties on, I must have missed that memo. I scanned the room realizing I lost sight of Kay and went up to the bar to grab a couple drinks while I waited for her to come back my way.
"Hey Niall." Alyssa said scooting up at the bar next to me.
"Nice ceremony." I said making small talk.
"Yeah it was really nice, uh just a quick question for ya." she said changing the topic quickly and twirling her hair.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"What are you doing here?" she asked bluntly.
"What do ya mean? Everett couldn't come and she went ahead and asked me." I shrugged.
"Okay but you've got to know that you get between them right?" Alyssa prodded further.
"I know hardly anything about them. I couldn't say no." I said.
"Don't pull anything on her." she said.
"Why does everyone keep saying this to me." I grumbled scratching the back of my neck.
"It's just, she's hella confused about what she wants and you being here doesn't make anything better." she said.
"Okay but I know nothing about this, I know nothing about you, I don't anyone here, I'm just here because she asked and was trying to be a good friend to 'er." I said getting frustrated. "I'm just here for the free booze and to be a filler in pictures for her. Alright?" I tried to leave the bar but she grabbed my arm.
"She could've just come single like most of our sisters, she could've asked anyone else in all of New York City, but there's a reason she asked you here. Don't let her act on her feelings." Alyssa said and walked away.
This was a goddamned mess. Alyssa really must be the only one who genuinely knows Kaine. We must know two totally separate people. Could Kaine really have admitted to her that she was confused and had feelings for me? I guess Alyssa really had a point, she didn't have to ask me. It made no sense why she would, we had only just gotten past our problems and Nate truly was the person who was with her through all of that. He should've been the one here, not me.
"Hey, you." Kay said approaching me from behind and taking Alyssa's place at the bar.
"Hey kid." I said.
"Kid?" she asked raising her eyebrows.
"All of your 'sisters' seems so young, you're all young." I laughed.
"Alrighty then." she laughed.
"Dazzling the room huh?" I asked her.
"Well I had to get in a picture with all the girls with Delaney so I just had to talk to a bunch of them. If that's what you mean by dazzling." she said.
The bartender came to us finally and we got two of the peach moscow mules, the couple's signature drink. I handed one off to Kaine and she introduced me to what felt like a million more people before we head off to the tent. It was decorated with string lights everywhere and fresh greenery along with the light pinks they chose for their colors. We found our table where we were sat next to Alyssa and Dan along with four of her other sisters and their dates. The couple made their entrance and had their first dance before dinner started being served. They made their rounds to the tables and ended up making their way towards ours at one point.
"Delaney you just look absolutely stunning." Kaine said standing up to her with Alyssa joining.
"I'm just so happy you girls made it!" she enthused. "Richard, here's Lys and Kay. Me and Jo and these two were totally inseparable during my senior year."
"Nice meeting you girls." he said shaking their hand.
"This is my boyfriend Dan." Alyssa said introducing the him.
"And this is Niall." Kaine said while I shook everyone's hand.
"It's so nice seeing you two and meeting you two. I've gotta keeping going." Delaney said waving at us. "Hope you're having fun!"
"Love you girly." Kaine called after her.
I was pretty sure that was going to be the end of introductions and whatnot tonight. Dinner came to our table shortly afterword and I was grateful Everett ordered steak and even more grateful it was mine now. Kaine and Alyssa continued to blab on and on about nothing and everything all throughout dinner while I kept quiet and listened carefully at how she talked with her. Kay was revealing all these details to things she'd keep quiet about if she was talking to anyone back in New York. She was incredibly opinionated with Alyssa and wasn't about to hold back any information.
Dan and I got up to grab a drinks for us and the girls. I brought back a couple bottles of beer and Kaine reached for one then hesitated.
"I never drank beer in college." she said.
"Doesn't mean you can't now." I offered.
"Would you mind just giving me the wine they poured for you and then you can take both those bottles?" she said. "It's just, I feel like I'm under such a critical eye with all the girls here."
"Not a problem at all to me." I shrugged rearranging the glasses.
Lights were turned down and dancing began shortly after the plates were cleared and I never really was one for that. I sat back in my chair while the girls got up and head out onto the floor. Kaine was clearly getting a touch tipsy but I had never seen her drunk on wine so this could be a whole other experience for me. I leaned back in my chair and sent a few messages to Harry who was in disbelief Kay was in a sorority. Our table was rather close to the bar inside the tent so I was accidentally drinking beer too fast and getting a little more drunk than I wanted to. There just wasn't much else to do other than sit in my chair and sip on my drinks.
Dan came back over to the table and told me to follow him. We grabbed a few more beers went outside the tent and there were at least thirty men smoking cigars up on the deck.
"God bless." I said when someone handed us the Cubans and gave us a light.
"Needed a break from in there." he said and I nodded.
"I probably haven't had a cigar since college, this is a treat." I said.
"Well that was like two years ago right?" he asked.
"I'm twenty-eight mate." I laughed.
"What the hell are you doing here with Kaine then?" he laughed.
"She just needed a fill in date, her boyfriend couldn't make it out here at the last minute." I said exhaling the smoke. "We work together."
"Gotcha." he said.
"How long 'ave you been with Alyssa?" I asked.
"Year and a half." he said. "It's been good. I just know none of these people."
"I feel ya." I nodded.
We managed to waste about an hour of time on the deck with the other guys just talking about sports and whatnot. I made my way back into the tent to see what Kaine was up to and she was just still dancing around with all her friends. I grabbed another beer at the bar before they started packing up and sat back down at the table. The mood in the room changed when Sara Smile started coming through the speakers and everyone began finding their partners. It felt so elementary but as I watched everyone get together I felt myself standing up and gravitating toward the floor. I was clearly a little drunk if I was even thinking of dancing. Kaine was standing off to the side chatting with a girl when I approached her and held my hand out. The girl excused herself and walked off.
"Who was that?" I asked and grabbed at her hand.
"Nobody really." she smiled taking it.
I walked us a little further in and placed turned her around to face me. I placed my right hand on the small of her back and she reached up and laid hers on my shoulder.
"I've always been a sucker for Hall and Oates." I said gently swaying us to the music.
"My dad too." she said. "I'm sorry I had to drag you along to this."
"It's okay, I'm getting free beer, what's better than that." I laughed.
"Expensive, free wine." she laughed.
"You're friends are nice." I said.
"Yeah, they're alright. Sorry I kept them from you too." she said.
"You're just a tough one to open up, Kid." I said.
"I like that." she smiled.
"What? Being difficult?" I said.
"Well yeah, but kid. Makes me remember I'm not an old guy like you." she said poking fun.
"Alright yeah you're a little drunk." I laughed.
"Oh, and you're not?" she said. "You're the one singing to the song subconsciously."
She leaned her head on my chest and I realized she was right. I rested my head on top of hers and we just swayed for the rest of the song while I quietly sang the words in her ear. It felt right, this whole moment just felt so right. My hand in hers, holding her close, I just was so content and never wanted the moment to end. Sadly when the song ended we had to pull apart and my moment was over.
"That was nice." I said.
"Wanna, uh, head back?" she asked quietly.
"I'm ready if you are." I said trying to be casual.
"I'm ready." she said.
I peered at my watch and it was 11:45, the reception was set to end around 1 but I was more than happy to get out of here. She went and grabbed her clutch off the table and we snuck out the tent and found our way out to the front of the country club. She linked her arm through mine and we walked the sidewalk back to our little place in either a very comfortable silence or very thick tension. I dug into my pants pocket to find the keys and Kaine took a step back. The only light there was outside was from the full moon and the small valence by the garage door and she looked absolutely beautiful in it. The breeze was blowing her hair and the skirt of her dress and finally I had to look away to fiddle with the doorknob.
"Did you have a good time?" I asked letting her walk in in front of me.
"I was happy to see my sisters." she said still a little tipsy. "They kept asking about you, you know." she added.
"Yeah? What'd they say?" I asked and shut the door.
"Said how handsome you are, wanted to know if you're single. I told 'em don't waste their time, he's already got girls running after him." she said.
"I don't though." I laughed.
"You don't know it yet." she said.
"Alright." I said quietly.
"Come on." she said making me follow her.
It was like she was a magnetic pull, I couldn't help but follow her. I loosened up my tie while I followed her and took off the suit coat to hang up in the bedroom where she was headed. She turned on the dim light on the bedside table and kicked off her shoes near the dresser.
"Can you get the clasp for me?" she asked pointing to her right side.
"Sure." I said leaning down to undo it.
I was dangerously close to her for how much alcohol I had in my system. This ended so horribly last time we were in a situation like this I didn't want to risk it again.
"There you go." I said lowly coming back up to her eye level.
"Thank you." she said quietly looking up at me.
The tension was just absolutely killing me and I didn't dare want to make any wrong moves, I had enough warning from H and Alyssa. Kay reached up and undid my tie and top button leaving her hands grabbing at the collar.
"Thanks." I nearly whispered.
She began pulling my face down closer to hers and it took everything in my power to stop her.
"Kay, we can't. We just can't." I said quietly and calmly trying to get out of her grip. "We know how it ended up last time."
"Why." she nearly demanded.
"There's Everett, there's our friendship, there's so much involved in this." I whispered.
"Niall, I want this. I'm sober enough to realize what I'm doing this time." she said.
"Kay, I don't want to risk it and lose you again." I said softly.
"I'm willing to risk it all." she said pulling me in and pressing her lips against mine.
I was caught totally off guard, I really didn't think she was going to do this. I was hesitant, I tried pulling back, but I had to give in. I grabbed the back of her neck with one hand and kissed her back. I wanted to forget, for just a minute the reality we were in and just live in our moment together. I felt selfish to be kissing someone who belonged to another man, but it was her, and it was me, and that's all that I had wanted for too long.
Without breaking apart Kaine's hands started running down my buttons undoing each one of them with care. When all of them were done she broke off the kiss and pulled it off of me tossing it behind her.
"Kaine, one last shot here." I said coming to my senses for a second.
"I have wanted you for so long, let's just have this moment." she admitted shyly.
I shouldn't have, I knew I shouldn't but I grabbed Kay's waist and pulled her hips toward me reconnecting our kiss. She was completely pressed up the front of my body so she had to be able to tell I was getting aroused. She opened her mouth and our tongues started moving together deepening our kiss. I was totally engrossed and when she pulled back biting my lower lip I knew I had to get these pants off of me and that dress off of her.
I moved my hand up her side finding the zipper pull hidden in the side of the dress and slowly started pulling it down. I placed my hand on her bare skin beneath the dressed and ran it up and down while I moved down to mark her neck. I sucked on the skin just below her ear hearing her inhale sharply. I was doing well. She pulled her arms through the straps of the dress and all that was holding it up now was our bodies so close together. Once it was off of her, we both knew there was no going back.
Kay stepped back and let the dress fall to the floor and she stepped out of it. I gazed up and down her body quickly and had no words. Her small breasts were perky, her left nipple was pierced all that was left on her was her lacy thong.
"Fucking hell, you do know how stunning you are don't you." I whispered pulling her toward me and kissing down her neck letting a whimper escape from her lips.
"And I knew you hand this." I said moving my hand to her left breast and rubbing my thumb over her nipple piercing earning a small moan from her.
"I figured if Rihanna could do it, so could I." she laughed.
"You are just so sexy." I said lowly while I massaged her breast.
She reconnected our lips while her hands moved down to my waistband. She carefully undid my belt and unzipped my pants and I tried kicking them off. I was incredibly aroused at this point and she noticed while she palmed my erection over my underwear. Fuck, this was incredible. I grabbed her waist again and walked her backward toward the bed sitting her down on the edge and laying her down. I kissed everywhere on her body because I had no idea if I'd ever get this opportunity again. While I was at it I slid her panties off of her and moved us up toward the headboard. I sucked at the base of her neck and slid my hand down between her thighs while she moaned beneath me.
I rubbed inside Kaine's inner thigh before I moved my middle finger into her folds. She let out a cross between a sigh of relief and a moan as soon as I did. I started rhythmically moving my finger in circles around her clit and she started swearing. I moved my finger toward her entrance and dipped it inside of her and kept my rhythm going.
