Twenty-Four - Life Lessons

*Niall’s POV*
*Monday Morning*

“Good Morning Bridgewater High!” Astrid exclaims over the voiceover, she was reading the morning announcements out during Homeroom. “I’ve got a couple announcements for you today! First of all, Principal McKeegan would like to remind all the students to keep their pets at home and not bring them to school.”

“Oh my gosh, that was about Philip.” Julian Barack laughed, “He brought a pigeon into class yesterday. No one was why or how. He just did. And it just so happened, Miss Fairview is terrified of them. She completely flipped yesterday.”

“Secondly, I hope you’re all ready! Because the Fall Ball Masquerade is this Thursday! Tickets will be sold for $2.00 until Wednesday in the cafeteria during lunch, so make sure you buy them quick! Bring your date, dress your best and don’t forget to mask your identity!” Astrid continues, excitedly, “Third on our agenda is what all the jocks and cheerleaders, and those other athletic kids have been waiting for! The Annual Senior Sports Tournament! Rules are simple. Eight teams. Eight leaders. The leaders will be picked by drawing names. If you wish to volunteer yourself, or someone else as a leader just place their name in the Golden Cup, which will be located in the front of the school office. Teams will be picked by qualifications, which will be posted on the school news wall, also in front of the school office, along with the team signup link. Remember this is a unisex game, so make sure your teams have an equal number of girls and boys! Each team must consist of at 15-11 players. May the best team win! That’s all for now, pupils! Have a great day!”

With that, the voice-over shuts off, and the kids resume talking while we wait for Mr Boston to finish up whatever he was doing.

“Niall, you trying out for a leader?” Franklin Foster asks, eagerly.

“No, I’m pretty sure Harry will.” I laughed at him.

“Why not you? Are you guys, Harry’s pets?” Julian questioned me.

“What? No. It’s just always been like this.” I shot at him, drawing my eyebrows together.

“Whatever man. Seems like you guys sacrificed a lot for him.” Julian pointed out with a shrug, as he turned to Mr Boston so he could start the day’s lesson.

I was set back by Julian’s comment. Have we actually sacrificed a lot for him? I mean if it weren’t for him, we might’ve still been friends with Destiny. But then again, that’s on me. I dared Harry to do that bet. As I pondered Julian’s words, Mr Boston went on with roll call.

“Mr Horan. Mr Horan. Mr Horan!” Mr Boston called me, trying to get my attention, started I snapped out of my thoughts.

“Sorry. Yeah?” I quickly say.

“Do you have your permission form?” He asked.

“No, I said I wasn’t going,” I repeated, probably for the tenth time since he handed out the forms.

“It’s mandatory you be there, Horan. Try.” Mr Boston says, giving me a concerned look.

“Yeah. Yeah okay.” I shrugged, not meeting his eyes.

“Alright, remember class permission forms are due this Wednesday. Get them in, quick.” Mr Boston repeated, before continuing on with the lesson.

Just then, my phone began vibrating in my pocket. Waiting for about five minutes, for Mr Boston to leave the room to fetch something I quickly pulled out my phone to check the message.

June: Is she here?

I looked across the room, to see Destiny’s empty seat.

Niall: No.

June: Gosh! It must’ve been her, last night.

Niall: Probably …

Niall: Why are we worried about her again?

June: Because how can we not be

Niall: Right.

Quickly slipping my phone back into my pocket, as Mr Boston came back I tried o give him my undivided attention, but all my brain could process was the number of reasons Destiny could’ve screamed like that last night.

*Lunch*

“Alright, Mabel’s on a field trip today, it’s the only chance we are going to get to talk about this present we’re getting her.” June declared.

The whole crew – all 14 of us, except Mabel, were here today, which included Neal and Amanda. Although they weren’t talking to one another, they managed to still stay at the same table as the rest of us. Resulting in Josh giving Harry the cold shoulder for trying to declare Neal, Josh, Antwon and Allen in the same category as Destiny. Reluctantly, Harry was going to have to apologise to Josh, and they both knew it.

“What are we even getting her?” Liam questioned her.

“Oh, don’t worry about that. I’ve got it under control.” Elizabeth smiled proudly.

“Why isn’t she doing her 18th birthday again?” Louis asked.

“Because of you-know-who,” Josh says.

“You’re not saying her name now?” Harry questioned, drawing his eyebrows together as he let out a laugh.

“Yeah, why do you care?” Ally says, narrowing her eyes.

“Don’t.” Harry shrugged, “Just asking.”

“Niall, you gotta pay up. I’ve got everyone’s money other than yours.” Elizabeth says to me.

“I told you, I’ll get it,” I say, staring down at the table, unable to meet her eyes.

“I need it by Wednesday,” Elizabeth says again.

“What? Is all the money in the world due this Wednesday? Jeez!” I snapped, unexpectedly.

“Just … just get it into me as soon as you can.” Elizabeth quietly says as everyone looked at me shocked.

“Yeah, I will. Sorry.” I mumbled, sitting back down, “How much is it again?”

“10,” Elizabeth says.

“Yeah. I got.” I chocked out. Immediately I pushed aside the haunting thoughts and tuned into the conversation my friends were having.

“So, did you guys buy your ticketed yet,” Ally asked. Ah goodness, everything is about money.

“Yeah.” Every says in scattered unison, some with nods.

“Niall?” Zayn asks me, looking cornered.

“Yeah. Done.” I nodded, again unable to meet his eyes.

“Great! It’s date.” June laughed, kissing my cheek.

“Yeah, I’m just excited for the afterparty,” I smirked at her.

Everyone looked at Bella, expecting her to say something. “What?” She asks, “I know what you mean by an after-party. I’m innocent, you all know that.”

“Right.” Liam laughed lightly, to break up the awkward silence. Everyone was probably thinking the same thing. If Destiny were here, she’d be asking what I had meant by an afterparty, and naturally, I would’ve replied with 2-person after party which would’ve sent chills down her back. I laughed at the thought.

*Harry’s POV*

I looked across the cafeteria to see Owen, sitting alone, drowning in his own thoughts. A couple people tried of talking to him, but he seemed to be blowing them off.

He is alone. I thought. Destiny must not be here, today.

“You guys aren’t going to talk about last night?” I asked, looking at everyone questionable. Naturally, just about this time, they’d be talking about her, especially with what happened last night. Weird that they aren’t. Actually, it’s been like this for a while now. Have they all just stopped caring?

“What about last night?” Elizabeth asked, shaking her head.

“Destiny?” I say, confused, drawing my eyebrows together.

“We did, already,” Zayn mumbles, not meeting my eyes.

“What? When?” I asked.

“Last night,” Zayn replied, no was looking directly at me now.

“Last night?” I questioned him.

“In a group chat. We were texting each other. We all woke up.” Zayn says, despite Ally efforts to stop him.

“I’m not in this chat?” I asked again.

“You didn’t want to know anything about her. So, I don’t see why you care so much.” Liam quickly says, trying to close the subject.

“Oh.” Is all I could say, with a small nod.

“It’s okay. I’m not in it either.” Bella whispers to me.

“Oh,” I say again. They placed me as an outsider. Ouch. I get why not Bella, they aren’t that tight with her, and I’ve asked them not to talk about Destiny with her. But for me? I mean yeah, I told them to keep it quiet, but kinda hurts.

Just then, Destiny burst through the doors, looking a little drowsy and boozed up. She walked over to Owen, who looked at her concerned. Owen’s hands brushed up against her forehead, moving away locks of hair, probably, as the two of them talked.

It’s just disgusting. They look like siblings. Owen could be her older brother, how could they have had sex.

“Have you guys noticed, Owen,’s always carrying that Video Camera, everywhere?” I tried again.

“We already talk about that too,” Zayn added, clenching his jaw.

“Look, Harry, you asked us not to talk about it with you. So that’s exactly what we are doing.” Liam says, shutting down the subject again.

“The thing is, you see,” Bella whispers again, with a smirk, “I’m the only one who she talks to. So actually, jokes on them.”

I laugh lightly, shaking my head, as I see the uncomfortable looks on my friend's faces. They knew exactly what Bella said, and they didn’t like it.

Whatever. Not my problem.

“Destiny!” Bella called to her before she and Owen could leave. Both of them turned to see who called her.

“Bella? Hey.” Destiny waves.

“Come here.” Bella motions to her.

“What are you doing?” Ally sneered at her.

“Talking to me friend.” Bella shrugged, everyone tensed at that word.

“What’s up, Bella.” Destiny nods at her, as she stands at the end of the table next to Bella, with Owen by her side. She managed to keep her attention directly on Bella, not letting her eyes wander to her former friends.

“You alright?” Bella asks, concerned.

Despite my best efforts to keep my gaze off her. All I could do was stare at Destiny’s forehead, the hair was still in front of her face. If I were to have pushed it aside, it would’ve stayed there.

“Yeah, Bella.” Destiny laughed lightly, “Are you?”

“Oh yeah. It’s just I heard you scream last night. I just thought something might’ve happened.” Bella explains. Everyone eyes were glued to the table or each other, but they desperately tried to not look directly at Destiny.

“How’d you hear that? Don’t you live on the other side of town?” Destiny asks, drawing her eyebrows together. “Was I that loud?”

“Oh. I was at Harry’s last night.” Bella shrugged.

“Oh,” Destiny says, trying to hide the smile forming on her face, as she bites down on her bottom lip. Owen could’ve help but laugh out loud, as he was unable to contain his laughter. Destiny put her hands on her hips, as she looked at the ground, still trying to contain herself.

“What’s so funny?” Bella asked. I had drawn my eyebrows together as I narrowed my eyes at them. Yeah, what was so funny? I thought.

“Nothing. Nothing.” Destiny laughed lightly, “Owen shut up.” She says, gently smacking his chest.

“Does that bother you?” Neal pipes up, narrowing his eyes at her. Destiny looks up to meet his eyes.

“Does what bother me?” Destiny says, still trying to contain her smile.

“That Bella was with Harry last night?” Neal says, his eyes scanning her facial expression. Instead of being hurt, Destiny merely gave Neal a smirk.

“Bother me? Why would it bother me? I mean, Owen’s at my place like every other night. Actually, he was there last night as well, probably why I was screaming last night.” Destiny smirked. We all knew what she said was a lie but still hurt. “Anywho, I should get going. I’ll see you around Bell.” Destiny says, before leaving. Everyone tenses at the name Destiny call Bella. She hates it when people call her Bell.

“Wait, Destiny. Did you just call me Bell?” Bella stopped her.

“Yeah. Was I not suppose to? Sorry, I’ll stop.” Destiny says, sincerely.

“Oh. No. It’s fine. I – I like it.” Bella smiles at her. Destiny returns the smile with a nod, before leaving with Owen.

“You said you hate it.” June presses. “You told us, you hate it when people call you Bell.”

“I hate it when people, who don’t accept me as a friend, ultimately, call me something other than my own name.” Bella sasses at them, before turning to me and starts up a conversation about the Fall Ball.

*Niall’s POV*

“I’m going to go. Just gotta use the restroom, real quick.” I tell June, kissing her forehead, as I got up.

“Yeah.” June nodded, “I’ll meet you outside, during spare. Yeah?”

I nodded, before walking away from my friends, and towards the washroom. Splashing my face with cold water, I let the bombarded thoughts I had locked up, fill up my mind.

Ten for Mabel. Ten for school. And two for that stupid ball. Where the hell am I suppose to get twenty-two dollars by Wednesday?

“Argh!” I cried out, as another migraine struck. I leaned myself against the wall, trying to contain myself.

When a migraine started each time, I was a prisoner, quite helpless in my cage of pain.

I was blinded with flashing bright spots and craved darkness, quiet and stillness. Often nausea would overwhelm me, and I would vomit, thankfully that’s the not the case for now.

Pain throbbed so violently around my skull that I wondered why it hasn’t cracked open yet.

Struggling, I pulled out the medication from my backpack. Helping myself take it, I slowly carried my pained body outside for some fresh air. I leaned myself against a large oak tree. Grasping my forehead in my hands, I crawled at my skull until the pain passed. There was some rustling off footsteps next to me, but I brushed it off, as a passer-by.

Chugging down the water, from the bottle I discovered in my backpack, I rested my head against the tree. Closing my eye shut, my hands fell to my lap and soon to my sides, as I feel into a dreamless coma for about 15 minutes.

“Niall. Niall. Niall.” I hear a voice call me, trying to shake me awake awake. It was June.

Slowly and reluctantly, I open my eyes. I blink, closed my eyes, and blind again. A streak of sunlight penetrate through the tree’s shade and blind me. Rubbing my eyes, I stretch my arms above my head and yawn.

“You feel asleep.” June smiled at me, sitting in front of me, crossed legged.

“Had a migraine attack. Thankfully it passed.” I smiled back, caressing her cheek with my hand.

“Niall, what’s that?” June asks, pointing at the large yellow envelope, I was half sitting on.

“Oh, I don’t it wasn’t here when I first came,” I said, looking at it curiously, as I pulled it out from underneath me. There was a large lump at the bottom.

“It has your name on it,” June says.

“Someone must’ve left it here,” I say, looking around to see if I might be able to spot the person who gave it to me.

“Open it.” June insisted. I nodded, as I flipped over the package. There was a thick pile of paper stapled together, with a letter at the front. “Read it.” June pressed, eagerly.

With a nod I started, “Hey Niall. This should’ve got to you sooner. I’m so sorry it hasn’t. I slipped in a chocolate bar for you, hoping it’ll make up for the lost time. Anywho, I know about your money problems.”

“Money problems?” June looks at me, concerned, “Why wouldn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to bother you. It’s fine.” I shrugged.

“Is that why you haven’t paid Elizabeth yet?” June questions me.

I give her a small nod before I continued. “I also added twenty dollars. Ten for Mabel’s birthday gift. Another ten for that trip. And two for the Ball, you should get to enjoy yourself. Also, I worked on a resume for you. Read through it very carefully, memorise it if you have to. I sent it out to at least a dozen places nearby, I printed out the advertisements for you to see. It’s attached to this letter. I gave them your contact information, so make sure you’re ready to receive calls on interviews. ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.’ I am giving you the fish, or in this case the money, so you can feed yourself for today. But I’m also teaching you to fish, by giving you the chance to get a job so you can feed yourself for the rest of your life. That is until to get a legitimate job. This is your chance. Take it. Be happy. Live. Life’s too short to stress. Good luck. With love, GA.”

I leafed through the pages, as tears started rolling down my cheek.

“Oh my god.” June breathed out.

“I know. These places are amazing. If I get a job here. Then, I’d be set for the rest of high school, and probably University or College. I could finally help out at home.” I say, not caring that the tears were still rolling down.

“This resume is legitimate. It’s amazing. He – or she, is right you have to memorise this resume word by word, you have to know everything here when you get called for interviews.” June says, reading through the resume.

“When? Do you think I’m going to get called?” I asked her, hope gleaming in my eyes.

“This person hyped you up so much, it’s going to hard to decline you.” June smiled at me.

“I love this person.” I cried out, pulling June into a huge hug. “I swear, even if they didn’t give me this chocolate bar I would’ve been so very much satisfied. But this just hypes of everything.” I laughed. “Does Elizabeth have spare right now? I want to go give her the money right away. I gotta buy that ticket now, as well. I can give in the trip from tomorrow, gotta get it signed first.”
