In Too Deep

Three

"Maddie. Get up." Wylla giggled pushing the redhead gently. Maddie groaned and pulled her blanket up over her head. "Maddie, we're going to be late if you don't get up. Just think of all the cool stuff you're going to see in your labs today." Wylla tried to coax Maddie from her bed. "Fine. I will buy you the biggest tea you've ever seen and dinner tonight." Wylla sighed. Maddie flung the covers from her body and sat up. Wylla laughed loudly and shook her head. "Come on. Get dressed. I'll walk with you." Wylla grinned at her roommate. Wylla went to her own closet to pick out her clothes.
"Soooo," Maddie began, walking to her closet. "Do you think that we'll see that cute guy that saved you at the pub today?"
"Maddie, you asked me that yesterday too and we didn't. It was probably just a freak occurrence. A nice guy who did what he thought was right. Why would it have to be anymore than that?" Wylla laughed.
"Because it's romantic and you're a writer. It would be so cute if that happened to you." Maddie smiled as she found her jeans and t-shirt for the day.
"But also highly unlikely." Wylla reminded Maddie as she found the dress she wanted to wear for the day.
"I can have a dream." Maddie giggled, sticking her tongue out at Wylla.

Wylla walked toward her next class slowly. She was full from lunch with Maddie and she was tired from it. She really wanted to take a nap. She had nearly fallen asleep in her classic literature class. Wylla ran her hands through her hair. She'd attempted to style it but it had gone wrong so she just left it the curly mess she was born with. She entered the room with a sigh. She knew her day could get so much better.
Wylla took a seat at the front of the room. She didn't care about what other people were going to think. She had been dying all summer to start her creative writing class and she was going to be as focused on it as she could. Wylla took a notebook from her bag and laid it on the desk. She began to doodle on the cover while she waited for the class to start. Other students started to fill the room rather quickly.
"Hey." A boy with dark hair and brown eyes smiled as he took the seat next to Wylla. Wylla just smiled politely at him. "I'm Masen." He stated with another smile.
"Wylla." She replied, completely uninterested in the boy. She knew by the way he was smiling what he wanted from her. The boy leaned closer to her, moving his small desk closer to hers as well, but before he could speak, the door to the lecture hall slammed closed.
"Good Afternoon. Welcome to Creative Writing. I'm Professor Horan. This is my playground, I make the rules. If you don't follow them, I kick you out." That smooth Irish accent hit Wylla's ears and her stomach dropped. Her eyes snapped up and she felt her mouth go dry. Niall's eyes met Wylla's and he felt his heart stop. He shook it off as quickly as he could. He couldn't think about the way she looked in her sweet but sexy floral dress or the way her messy hair tumbled down her back. "First rule." Niall grabbed Masen's desk and moved it away from Wylla's. "My male students will not make me female students uncomfortable." Niall stated, glaring at Masen. Wylla struggled to hold in a giggle as did a few other girls in the room. Niall returned to the front of the room. He threw a clipboard on the large table top at the front of the room. "Second rule. I hate roll call. I refuse to do roll call. It's a waste of my time with you. Every class you sign in and I look at attendance when I grade assignments. If you don't sign in, I won't know you're in class. Simple as that." Niall spoke with an authoritative voice. "Third rule. I give assignments. You do the assignments. I'm not really one for second chances. Unless you have a really good reason, I don't accept late turn-ins. Death is about the only reason. But I'm open to clever ones." Niall chuckled. Wylla bit her lip and tried not to laugh herself. He must've heard some outstanding excuses. "Along with late assignments, I dislike late students. As a very wise Professor around here likes to say, 'no one likes tardy people'."
"STYLES!" A boy at the back shouted.
Niall nodded and laughed, " Exactly." He cleared his throat, "Last rule. Have fun with this class. It's creative writing not stressful writing. Anything I give you, it will never be too much for you to handle. I want you to challenge yourselves but please do not over think." Wylla smiled and dropped her eyes to her desk. She loved the way he was acting toward the class. "Questions? Comments? Concerns?" Niall asked the class. There wasn't a peep out of any student in the room. "Great." Niall clapped his hands together the rubbed them together. "Let's get started."

Niall stood at the front of the lecture hall with his eyes on the students. He was wondering what was going on in their brains as they all scribbled furiously. He'd given them an easy exercise, one that didn't take too much thought but that could be done a million different ways. Niall couldn't help it when his eyes fell on Wylla. Her blonde curls were falling in her face as she wrote slower than the other students. He watched as she pushed her hair behind her ear, licked her lips, chewed her pen cap. Her eyes seemed to follow her hand as she wrote. Wylla closed her eyes for a moment. Niall pushed away from the wall he was leaning against. He wanted to be inside her brain. Why was she closing her eyes like that? Wylla smiled and opened her eyes. Instantly she went back to writing. Niall lifted his eyebrow. Was she trying to clear her head? Was she trying to picture whatever it was that she was writing about? He was dying to know. Niall looked over at the clock.
"TIME!" He called out. He had given them ten minutes to create something. "Now. Who is brave enough to read theirs out loud?" He tried not to chuckle when not a single student raised their hands. "Come on. What kind of memories are you guys writing about? Anyone?" Niall was still laughing. Niall was shocked when he saw Wylla raise her hand. "Wylla." Niall smiled at her. "Stand up and read what you wrote." Niall hopped up on the table top, eagerly awaiting her voice.
"I remember it felt like hitting a brick wall. When the wind gets knocked out of you, and you struggle to regain your barrings. Like time had stopped and nothing moved. But I remember it felt like everything was rushing past me as well. The lights and sounds and faces all blending together. Like I was out of step with time while everything else around me aligned with the universe the way is was meant to." Wylla read from her paper. Niall smiled and leaned in listening more carefully to her words. "I remember all of the colors that create life bouncing out of a single smile. A warm feeling that blanketed my insides. Rays of sunlight shooting from eyes that were as blue as the skies." Wylla blushed as she spoke a little quieter. Niall's heart raced a bit; what was she talking about. "A steadying hand that reached out with the grace of a God and the kindness of a man. I remember the rush of blood spreading to my cheeks and nose, embarrassment being my main concern after the blue eyes looked at me with compassion." Wylla's voice was becoming a little shaky. Niall was trying to hide his surprise and lust. "I remember the kindness of a stranger." Wylla finished with a smile. She sat down quickly, feeling everyone's eyes on her. Her face turned bright red and she tucked her hair behind her ears again. Niall cleared his throat and took his eyes off of Wylla.
"Alright. Let's talk." Niall smiled. "What do we think about Wylla's paragraph? What do we know? What could we learn? What tools did she use?" Hands started to go up instantly. Niall pointed to a girl in the back.
"Sounds like someone has a massive crush." The girl giggled. Niall shook his head when he saw Wylla's cheeks turn an even brighter shade of red. He pointed to another student.
"Imagery. She used a lot of imagery. Most of it cliche but you could see it." The boy sounded like a snob. Wylla rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her chest. Niall furrowed his brows and grunted. Niall pointed to another girl, not too far from Wylla.
"I loved it, first of all." The girl grinned. Wylla turned around and smiled at her. "I think the flow was awesome, never missed a beat. The imagery was great, especially the way the world stopped but kept going. It was an interesting way to describe something. You could tell that it was a very important event." The girl went on for another minute.
"I think you have a fan." Niall teased Wylla with a genuine smile. Wylla sank down in her seat and tried to hide herself. "Alright last one." Niall motioned to the boy sitting next to Wylla.
"Who is it about?" Masen smirked, looking at Wylla.
"Not you." Niall scoffed. Masen looked up at him with angry eyes. Wylla held back a laugh. "You're not following rule one very well." Niall informed Masen. "Wylla, spectacular job. Thank you for sharing." Niall grinned at her. She nodded and tapped her pen anxiously on her notebook. "Let's do another one." Niall grinned at the class.

"Hey. How was your day?" Maddie asked Wylla as she walked into the dorm room. Wylla shrugged and threw her bag on her desk. Wylla flopped onto her bed and covered her face. "Wylla, what's wrong? You were so excited about today. What happened?"
"I have this really douche-y kid in my creative writing class. I don't like my classic lit professor. And my creative writing professor..." Wylla sighed.
"What's wrong with your creative writing professor?" Maddie felt bad for Wylla. She'd looked forward to her creative writing class since she'd arrived.
Wylla sat up and stared Maddie in the eyes, "If I tell you, you can't say a word or do anything ridiculous." Maddie nodded quickly. "You know that guy outside of the pub, the one that helped with my ex? The one you won't shut up about." Maddie nodded slowly. "That's my creative writing professor." Maddie's eyes lit up. "Maddie." Wylla groaned.
"What?" Maddie shouted. "I can't believe this!" Maddie giggled. "But man, does that suck." Maddie frowned. "Did he say anything about the pub?" Maddie inquired moving over to Wylla's bed.
Wylla shook her head, "No. But I did." Maddie's jaw dropped. "What? We did an exercise and no one else would read theirs so I did and that's what mine was about. I think he knew it. I kind of hope that he did. I was kind of trying to say 'thanks', you know." Wylla explained.
"What else were you trying to say?" Maddie smirked.
"I kind of put in there how he was really attractive and that he gave me the tingly, butterflies sensation." Wylla blushed madly. Maddie covered her mouth in excitement. "Maddie, what do I do? I can't want to stare at my professor all day."
"Well, he's your professor. You kind of have to look at him. No one is going to notice that you're into him if you jsut sit there like you're trying to learn...I mean, if you can control your drool." Maddie teased. Wylla smacked her arm playfully. "It'll be fine. Just sit in the back of the class so no one can notice how you're staring." Maddie laughed again. Wylla nodded; it seemed to be sound advice.
