Fireproof (Book 4 in the No Control Series)

Chapter 15

Harry’s Journal Entry:

I’ve just left Sara’s hotel room. She told me she’s the reason that woman was threatening Lizzie. Sara was drunk at a party and said things she shouldn’t have. Now Lizzie and Liam are going to have to deal with the fallout. I could feel how badly Sara felt, yet I could also sense some other underlying issue going on. I just can’t quite put my finger on it yet.
I held Sara while she cried and I got the impression she wanted me to stay with her tonight. I chose to act as though I didn’t receive those signals.
My mind is still so very full of Lizzie. I’m not sure if our visit today was helpful or hurtful.
I’m not an idiot; I know in my head that I need to move on. Lizzie will never choose me.
The problem is explaining that to my heart.

************

The driver drops Liz off at home. She takes a deep breath before unlocking the front door. Inside, she finds Liam in the living room. “Liam?”
He turns. “Hello, Beautiful. Come sit with me, the kids are napping.”
Liz sits beside him on the couch, her hand finding it’s usual resting place on his thigh. “You’re watching our wedding DVD?”
He grins. “I am.”
“Why?”
Liam kisses her forehead. “I’m not sure really. I just had this overwhelming feeling to watch it.”
Liz wonders if he somehow could feel that she was with Harry. She brushes aside the feeling, cuddling up against Liam. He rubs her arm softly as they watch, whispering in her ear, “I love you even more today than I did then.”
Tears rim Liz’s eyes. “And I love you even more than that, Handsome.” She looks up into his eyes. He wipes the tears away before gently kissing her. Sweet, soulful kisses that they share until the kids wake.

That night after putting the kids to bed, Liz takes Liam’s hand and leads him to the living room. “I have something to tell you, Baby. You have to promise not to get angry though.”
Liam’s brow furrows. “That means you know it will make me angry. What has Harry done now?”
Liz blows out a breath. “You’ve said that I should tell you everything and we’ll work it out together. You have to trust me, promise to listen and not get angry.”
Liam nods. “You’re right, Love.”
“That text from Caroline I told you about; well, turns out there wasn’t a VIP client. When I got to the hotel room, Harry was there.”
Liam stands up, walking across the room, his hands in fists.
“Liam?” Liz says cautiously.
“I’m trying, Love. Go ahead.”
She moves behind him, touching his shoulder. “You know nothing happened.”
He turns to face her. “I know. But what did he try to do?”
Liz is conflicted about how much to share. It kills her that she is the cause of the strain in their friendship. “He just wanted to talk.”
Liam smirks. “I doubt that, but go ahead.”
“I was only there for a few minutes. He told me he’s been trying to deal with his feelings.”
Liam gently plays with the curls on her shoulder. “Liz, I trust you and I trust that you dealt with it appropriately. However...if he tries anything like that again...I’ll deal with him.”
In reaction to his serious tone, Liz nods. “Fair enough.”
