Icing on the Cake
Chapter Sixty-Five
~65~
After an hour or so of play, both Adam and Anastasia got really tired and fell asleep right in the play room. Adam fell asleep with his head on my leg. Sitting with my legs crossed, I lifted him up and rested his head on my arm and let his body lay across my legs. He was holding the Barbie I gave him like a teddy bear.
I could see Anastasia sleeping on a bean bag chair over by Calum. He got up and walked over to me.
I saw Calum wearing all kinds of fake jewelry: pink clip earrings, necklaces, rings. I tried not to burst out laughing when I saw him.
“What?” Calum whispered to me, since he could tell I was looking at him weird.
“You’re pretty.” I whispered back, trying not to laugh.
“Thank you.” He responded sarcastically. “Anastasia styled me herself.”
“Should we put them in their beds?” I asked.
Calum nodded, and we brought them to their room.
Knowing that the three would be up early since they went to bed early, Calum and I decided to try and get some sleep right away.
Julia woke us up early in the morning. “I have question.” Julia asked after we invited her into our bedroom.
“Okay.” I responded.
“I see children room.” Julia said. “Why my son have doll?”
That question irritated me for many reasons.
“Our son.” Calum clarified.
“Why are you upset?” I asked.
“Why boy have doll?”
“Why shouldn’t a boy have a doll?” I asked. “We make the decisions, Julia. We were nice to give you an open adoption. I don’t want to be rude, but that’s the way it has to be.”
I don’t know how much of that she understood, but Julia simply left our bedroom after we told her that.
My heart, Oof.
