Icing on the Cake

Chapter Sixty-One

~61~

I soon found out that my mother was in the hospital, and that her health was getting exponentially worse.

My father was becoming desperate, almost begging me for money on a regular basis.

I had an idea. I would go to the hospital, with Calum, prepared to pay for it. They would get the money depending on how they reacted seeing me with Calum.

I know, I know, it’s like I’m buying my parents’ love, even blackmailing them for it. But, at least that’s something, right?

She’s my mother. She brought me into this world and I have the means easily accessible to help her with what she needs right now. With that being said, she literally kicked me out, disowned me, when I was sixteen. She didn’t even care if I lived or died; it took her three and a half years to even try to contact me. If she disowned me why should I do anything for her?

I walked into the hospital, and I knew which room to go into since my father texted me. He knew I was coming.

As I approached the room, my father was waiting in a nearby waiting room. They must have been doing tests on her or something.

The first thing my father said to me, the very first thing when he saw me in that hospital, “Why did you bring him with?”

“He’s my fiancée.” I said back, putting my arm around his waist and pulling him close.

“Why would you embarrass us like that?” My father said. “We have our friends and family coming in and out all day.”

“You know,” I said, feeling like I should be angry that he’s treating me like this when he needs something, but in reality hurt that he was treating me like this, “I’m your family, too.”

“I can’t believe you’d embarrass me like this.”

“How is she?” I asked, evading the topic.

“They need to start the chemo very soon.” He said, looking like he was getting emotional. “But we just can’t afford it right now.”

I sighed, feeling to guilty to not do anything. I took out my wallet.

“Remember when you used to make me use a different wallet when we went on family vacations?” I asked my father. “You said the one I had that’s like this is to ‘femmy’.”

He didn’t say anything.

I pulled out a credit card that I had just opened with a deliberately long line of credit for this purpose. “Here.” I said. “Put anything you need on this. The bill comes to me.”

My father smiled. “Thank you son.” He said.

With that I left the hospital, and left the situation.
