Chapter 8

Enola and Niall returned to the living room quietly. Niall took the seat beside Brynn and whispered something to her, making her smile. Darcy sat on my lap looking at an art book she had pulled off the shelf. I turned my eyes up to Enola. She looked upset and like she was just crying. She quickly took her eyes off mine. I tapped Darcy's leg lightly, making her look at me.
"Hey. Let me go talk to your Mum." I whispered to her. She nodded and smiled and slid onto the chair next to me. I carefully stood from the chair. I made sure Darcy was sitting with her back to the cushion before making my way to Enola. I took Enola's hand in mine gently. Her eyes went wide as I brushed her knuckles with my thumb. The feel of her soft fingers was almost enough to make me lose control. "Come talk to me." I murmured to her. She seemed apprehensive. I tugged her hand gently, "Come on." Enola's legs finally gave way. I led her into the kitchen. I leaned against the island and stared at Enola with a sadness that nearly matched hers. "What's wrong, Noli?" I asked softly. She shook her head. "Come on, Enola. I know you. I know when you've been crying." She sighed heavily and tears stared to stream down her face once again. I didn't like it. I pushed away from the counter and wrapped my arms around her waist. She buried her face into my neck and held onto me tightly, splaying her hands on my back.
"I'm sorry, Harry." She gasped trying to push away from me.
"No. No. Just stay. You need it." I whispered to her. I gripped her tighter, not wanting to let her go. She relaxed into me. My body sagged a little. Feeling her cheek pressed against my chest was making my heart race. I ran my hand through her hair gently, brushing it off her shoulder. I rubbed her back to soothe her even though I wanted to be kissing her pain away. "I don't know what's wrong. But please know that you can always run to me if you need to. No matter what." I whispered to her. The statement only made her cry harder.
"I have to go. I am going to be late." Enola heaved as she pushed away from me. I let her go, knowing she wasn't ready to deal with what happened between us. I nodded and walked out of the room, letting my hand linger on hers for a moment.

I stood next to the chair Darcy was sitting in. Louis was watching me carefully as Enola returned from the kitchen. Her eyes were still a little puffy but her face wasn't nearly as red any longer and she had stopped crying.
"Louis, Niall, I'm going to head out now." Enola said with a tear filled voice. Louis and Niall
both stood and gave her a hug. "I'm not sure when I'll be back but it shouldn't be too late in the day." Enola informed them.
Louis smiled, "It's all good. I'm sure that we can handle it."
Niall agreed, "Yeah, we can do this. I mean, there's six of us and one of her, right?" Enola smirked a bit and I did as well. If Darcy was as much like Enola as I thought she was, she was going to give them a run for their money. I chuckled a bit when Brynn rolled her eyes at Niall's comment.
"Alright. I believe you." Enola was still smirking at them. "Darcy." Enola called out. Darcy looked up at her with a smile. "I'm going to go now. Be good. Okay?" Enola smiled brightly. Darcy hopped off the chair and ran to Enola. Darcy wrapped her tiny arms around her mother's neck and squeezed. "I'll only be gone a few hours. You'll have fun with Louis and Niall." Enola assured the toddler. Then I heard Darcy sniffle. I frowned and backed away from the chair.
"I don't want you to leave, Mommy." Darcy cried. Enola's eyes welled up a little. "Just don't go to work, Mommy." Darcy begged.
"I have to, baby. You know that. We talked about this." Enola sighed releasing the little girl. Enola took a step back from her. "I love you. I will see you in a few hours." Darcy then threw herself at Enola's feet, crying uncontrollably. Enola tried to stand her up but she just threw herself down again.
"Mommy, don't go!" Darcy cried. Louis huffed and tried to pick Darcy up. Darcy let all of her limbs go loose and she landed on her rear. I stepped forward and pushed Louis out of the way.
"Darcy, love." I spoke softly as I knelt down next to her. Darcy looked at me with a tear stained face. "What did we talk about earlier?" I asked. She just stared at me. "Doesn't Mummy always come back?" I inquired. Darcy nodded. "Right. We'll see Mummy at the end of the day. But just because Mummy is gone doesn't mean that we can't have fun, right?" Darcy just looked at me more. "While we wait for Mummy we can do something." I stated.
Darcy wiped her face, "Like what?"
"Well, we could make something. We could go to the park. WE could go for a drive. We can do anything you think would be fun." I smiled at her warmly.
"We can't go anywhere." Darcy giggled a bit, "You're not dressed."
I laughed loudly, "I will get dressed just for you. What do you say? Can we have a good day without Mummy?" She nodded and hugged me tightly. I hugged her back, loving the feeling of her little arms around my neck. Darcy released me after a moment then went to Enola. Enola picked her up and kissed her lightly.
"Bye Mommy." Darcy murmured hugging Enola close.
"Bye baby. I love you."
"I love you." Darcy replied as Enola set her on her feet at Louis' side.
After a quick goodbye to everyone else, Enola looked at me, "Thank you, Harry." I gave a single nod before she walked out the door.
Darcy looked up at me as she held Louis' hand, "You get dressed. We're 'possed to have fun today." She had a bit of a playful attitude.
I saluted her stiffly, "Yes ma'am." She giggled as I turned my back to walk up the stairs.
"Harry?" Darcy's little voice peeped. I looked back at her with a smile. "Can I help you?"
I lifted my eyebrow, "You wanna pick out my clothes?" She nodded quickly. I laughed again, "Come on." Darcy released Louis hand then ran to me. She took my hand in hers then pulled me toward the staircase. I happily let her lead me up the stairs.

I set Darcy down on my bed. She sat down with her little legs crossed like a pretzel. I could feel her staring at me as I looked through my closet for some clothes. Suddenly, I felt a little tug on my arm. I gazed down to see Darcy smiling widely up at me.
"Maybe you should pick your pants first." Darcy suggested. I nodded and pointed out the shelves of pants to her. She looked at me like she was confused.
"You said you wanted to choose my clothes. You get to do all of it." I smiled at her. She clapped loudly then reached for a pair of my jeans. They were dark blue and torn in the knees. She handed them to me. I threw them back on the bed.
"I can't see your shirts." Darcy stated quietly. I picked her up and set her down on my bed again. I grabbed a few shirts off the rack then showed them to her. She shook her head at all of them. I threw the hangers of shirts down on the bed beside her little body then grabbed a few more. I held up my blue paisley shirt to her. Darcy stuck her tongue out and wrinkled her nose.
"What? What's wrong with this shirt?" I asked her in a scoff.
"Too girly for you." Darcy replied in a giggle.
I put my hand on my hip for a moment, "Well, this happens to be your mother's favorite shirt that I own." Darcy looked at me curiously. I forgot that she didn't know anything about her mother and I. I threw the shirt down and moved on to the next one. "How about this one?" I asked holding up my blue flannel shirt. Darcy shook her head again. "Why not? It's just blue." I stated not understanding her dislike of the shirt.
"Not blue. I don't like blue." Darcy replied softly. I sighed and threw the shirt on the bed along with the others that had been discarded. I held up my purple flannel shirt. "That one! That one!" Darcy exclaimed, clapping her hands loudly. I furrowed my brow at the girl.
"You know there's a hole in this one right?" I asked showing her the hole in the arm.
She shrugged, "That's okay." She lifted her foot up, "There's a hole in my sock." I laughed and nodded. I handed her the shirt. She carefully took it off the hanger then handed the hanger to me. I then picked up the rest of the shirts she hated and put them away. AS I came back to the bed Darcy jumped up in excitement. "HEY!" She shouted loudly.
"What?" I laughed at her vivaciousness.
"You have a butterfly!" She bounced up and down on the bed. I looked down at the tattoo on my torso with a smile. Enola said she loved butterflies. I nodded looking into her eyes. "Can I touch it?" Darcy asked. I shrugged and stepped closer. Darcy's little fingers reached out and traced the outline of my tattoo. I tried to fight back the emotions coming to me. I thought of all the times her mother traced the exact same tattoo, staring at it with awe like she was. "Harry?" Darcy's voice brought me out of my own world. I gazed down at her with confusion. "You cryin'." She stated brushing tears from my cheek with her tiny hands.
I smiled weakly, "Sorry, baby girl. Got lost for a moment."
Darcy looked at me strangely, "Mommy does that sometimes too."
"Does what?" I asked sitting down beside her.
Darcy's eyes saddened deeply, "She stares at me for a long time then she just cries. Sometimes really hard, sometimes she doesn't cry really hard. It's scary." I pulled the sad and scared little girl into my lap.
I brushed her curls away from her face, "You know, your Mummy loves you very much. Maybe, do you think she cries because she loves you so much and you are everything to her." Darcy shook her head slowly. "Why not? She does love you that much." I felt my heart growing heavy.
"Mommy has the sad cries. Her face isn't happy. She's really sad." Darcy stated matter of factly.
I sighed and tried to control my own emotions, "When was the last time Mummy had the sad cries?"
Darcy's nose scrunched a bit, "Last night. She woke me up. I went into her room and laid with her so she wouldn't be so sad anymore. But I don't think it worked. She just cried harder."
"Maybe Mummy cried more because she felt how much you loved her." I said with a small smile trying to make the three year old in my lap feel better. She just shrugged. "Well, lets think, has something changed in the last few months? Did someone go away?"
"Um Uncle Louis and Uncle Niall were gone for a long time. Meme went to heaven." Darcy stated softly.
"Meme?" I asked her quietly.
She nodded, "Mommy's other mommy. The Irish one."
My eyes saddened as I suggested, "Meme went to heaven. Maybe she misses Meme."
"Maybe." Darcy sighed.
"What about your daddy? Do Mummy and Daddy have happy days together?" I asked Darcy quietly. Darcy shrugged. "What do you mean you don't know?" I laughed.
Darcy's eyes turned even sadder, "I don't know my daddy."
My eyes hardened a bit, "It's just you and Mummy?"
Darcy nodded once more, "I think Mommy is lonely. I don't want her to be lonely."
I smiled a little to myself, "Hey, I've got an idea. Let's do something really nice for Mummy. What do you say?" Darcy clapped her hands and nodded quickly. "Okay. Let me get dressed." I set her down on the bed then jumped up. "You stay here. I'll be back." Darcy giggled and nodded. I grabbed my pants off the bed then ran into my attached bathroom.

I raced down the stairs with Darcy in my arms. I saw Niall sitting on the sofa in the living room wearing a smile. I poked my head into the kitchen looking for the rest of our friends. I walked into the living room with Darcy.
"Ni, where's everyone else?" I asked curiously.
"Went home to change and stuff. They'll be back soon." Niall replied.
I nodded, "Well, can you stay here and wait for them?"
Niall smiled, "Of course, Darcy and I will be alright."
I shook my head, "Darcy is coming with me. I just don't want Louis to have a heart attack coming back to an empty house."
Niall looked completely confused, "Where are you two going?"
"Not important." I replied quickly going for Darcy's bag. Niall glared at me for a moment. "The less you know right now the better." Niall raised his eyebrow like he was concerned. "WE have something to do and the element of surprise is something that we need." I informed him.
"Tell me where you're going." Niall grunted. I looked at Darcy and questioned her with my eyes. She shrugged with her palms facing the ceiling.
I shrugged too, "We'll figure it out." I picked up Darcy's bag then reached for the car-seat.
"Harry, are you sure this is a good idea?" Niall asked as I tried to get the little one and all of her stuff out to my Range Rover.
I nodded, "It's an excellent idea." Niall just stared me down. I sighed heavily, "Just have Brynn call me when she gets here. We'll meet where ever Darcy and I are." I didn't give Niall another chance to protest. I rushed out the door with Darcy in my arms.

I carried Darcy into a flower shop. She looked around with wide eyes and a big smile. I couldn't help but smile myself seeing her excitement.
"Alright Darcy, what should we get for Mummy?" I asked her softly and set her down on her own feet. She took my hand quickly as we started to walk around. Darcy took her time looking at all of the different kinds of flowers and arrangements. "What do you think, baby girl? What would make Mummy happy?" I asked her quietly.
"These are Mommy's favorite." Darcy said putting her hand near the lilies. "But Mommy likes these too." She sighed pointing to the irises.
"What are Mummy's...seven favorites?" I asked Darcy. We went through the shop one more time. Darcy picked out lilies, irises, gardenias, roses, peonies, daisies and hibiscus. "Okay, so, how many times are we going to send these to Mummy?" I asked her. She looked at me curiously. "Well, we picked out seven flowers. One for each day of the week. How many weeks are we going to send these to Mummy?" I clarified for her.
Darcy smiled, "Three! Because I am three."
I laughed and picked her up, "Lets go talk to the nice lady about sending Mummy flowers." Darcy and I walked up to the counter quietly as to not startle the shop owner. "Hello." I greeted the older woman with a smile.
She beamed brightly at Darcy and I, "Hello there. How are you?"
"Very well thank you. How are you?" I replied politely.
Darcy waved at the woman, "Hi."
The shop owner smiled at Darcy, "Hello darling." The woman turned her eyes back to me, "What can I help you with?"
"We need some bouquets delivered over the next three weeks, if that is possible." I answered kindly.
The woman nodded, "Of course. Which species and what days should I send them?"
I looked at Darcy, "What would Mummy like to see today and the next two Mondays do you think?"
She put her little finger against her lips and hummed, "Mommy would like the...lilies."
The woman smiled, "So, today and the next two Mondays I'm sending lilies. Any others?"
I blushed a bit, "We're doing a different flower everyday." The woman looked at me a bit shocked. "They're for her mother." I motioned to Darcy.
The woman smiled, "Ah, still in love even with a child I see."
I shook my head, "Not exactly." I felt bad correcting the woman in front of Darcy. I didn't like the sad look on Darcy's face. The woman behind the counter smiled even brighter though.
"Okay sweetie, what other flowers did you want to give your Mummy?" The woman asked Darcy. Darcy then rattled off the rest of her list. Then she picked out days for each.
I stopped Darcy when she got to roses. I gazed at the woman kindly, "Roses on Sunday." Darcy looked at me a curiously. "Trust me, baby girl. Roses on Sunday." Darcy nodded then told the woman the last days to pair up.
"Okay. So twenty one bouquets and delivery." The woman clarified. Darcy and I both nodded. The woman then read out the total for everything Darcy and I had picked out. "Did you want a message with any of them?" She asked me after taking my credit card.
I nodded, "Yeah, on the very last bouquet of roses." She quickly pulled out a pen and scribbled on the order form.
"What would you like it to say?" She inquired.
"All my love." I replied. She smiled as she wrote it down. Just then my phone started to ring. I groaned and pulled it out of my back pocket. It was Brynn. They were ready to do something as a group. "Darcy, will you talk to Auntie Brynn, please?" Darcy nodded as I slid the answer call button across. I handed her the phone. I apologized to the shop owner as she swiped my credit card.
"Hiyah Auntie Brynn!" Darcy shouted into the phone. I smiled a bit, definitely Enola's child. "No. We're okay. We're doing something nice for Mommy." Darcy spoke brightly. "No. No. I can't. Its a surprise." Darcy giggled. Darcy tapped my shoulder as I signed the receipt for the shop owner.
"What Darc?" I asked looking up at her.
"Auntie Brynn wants to know where to meet us." Darcy informed me. I held my hand out for the phone. Darcy handed it over happily.
"Hey Brynn ." I sighed into the receiver.
"Where should we meet you?" She inquired. I turned around to the window and saw a small cafe across the street. I told her to meet us there. Brynn agreed then hung up on me. The shop owner then handed me all of the paperwork for the delivery and the bouquets.
"I hope your Mummy likes these." The woman smiled at Darcy.
Darcy beamed back, "They came from us. Of course she will." The woman and I both chuckled and agreed with her.
"Thank you so much. I know its a lot to ask." I said softly to the shop owner.
She shook her head, "It's incredibly sweet. I hope you win her over."
I smiled and gazed upon Darcy's face, "I'm gunna try." I wished the shop keeper and lovely day then Darcy and I headed across the street to the little cafe. As we walked in through the door, we saw the others pull up.

I sat beside Darcy quietly while the girls tried to get information out of her on what we were doing for Enola but she wasn't helping them at all.
"Oh come on Darc, why can't you tell us what you did for your mum?" Sophia whined at her.
Darcy shook her head, "Cause, it's a surprise. You'll ruin it." I laughed quietly at Darcy accusation. Sophia and Brynn did become quite the blabbermouths when they were excited.
"Darcy, why do you wanna do something nice for Mummy?" Louis asked concerned. Darcy frowned and looked up at me. She seemed afraid to tell Louis what she had told me.
I ran my hand through her curls to comfort her, "It's okay. You can tell him that Mummy is sad a lot." Louis looked up at me wide eyed as well.
"Harry and I wanted to make her smile." Darcy stated quietly. I brushed her hair off her shoulder as she looked down at her coloring book again.
"And Mummy will smile, everyday. Don't worry sweetie." I assured the little girl I adored so much already. Darcy sighed and climbed into my lap. She rested her head on my chest and picked up her teddy bear. I wrapped my arms around her tiny frame and held her close. "Are you still hungry?" I asked her after a few quiet moments. She shook her head. "Okay, what would you like to do now? Do you want to go to the park or do you want to go see a movie?" Darcy shrugged. "What do you wanna do?" I asked leaving it open for her to come up with something.
"Can we get things to make Mommy something?" She asked.
I nodded, "Of course. What would you like to make for Mummy?" Darcy shrugged. I laughed once again, "Okay, we'll figure it out when we get there."

I laid on the sofa, with my feet up and Darcy on my chest. I kicked Liam and Sophia onto the floor so I could lie down with her. She was being naughty because she was getting sleepy. Louis and Niall couldn't get her to calm down and take a nap. So I decided to step in. I felt her little lungs lifting her back slowly. I smiled when she relaxed into me a bit more.
"Want a blankie?" I whispered to her. She nodded. I smiled, just like her mother. I grabbed the throw from the back of the sofa and draped it over us. "Comfy?" I asked softly. She nodded against my chest. "Okay. You rest then. You don't have to sleep. Just be still and quiet." I stated gently.
"Okay Harry." She murmured tiredly. I tried to keep my laughter in as I began to rub her thigh gently. I started to feel my own eyes get heavy. I knew I was still tired from the night before. I didn't sleep well after staying up very late then I got up early to run around with Darcy and the boys all day. I gazed down at Darcy when her breathing became a bit more shallow. She was sound asleep.
"Whoa, good job, Harry." Liam seemed shocked by my ability to get Darcy to calm down. I smiled and closed my own eyes. Soon enough I was asleep as well, cuddling Darcy close.
