Through His Eyes

Chapter Two

~A Few Hours Later~

‘’Ah, Prince Horan, you look fetching this evening, prepared for the big celebration tonight?’’ Ester, one of the maids, asks me as she walks along my side to the front entrance, my blazer draped over her arm as she holds it against her body, like her rules state.

‘’Not really excited about it, but I guess the meal will be nice, that’s what I look forward to.’’ I smile lightly as I glance over at her. She was snickering softly to herself at my humor, even though it was really true. I was starving for something to choke down, and tonight will be the night.

‘’As always. But, uh, does everything fit well on you? No tight places, broken hems?’’ She asks curiously as she stops me in the middle of the foyer. I turn to face her, knowing that she likes for me to look my best, especially at a time like this.

Ester was like a mother to me, mainly because my mother died of a harmful disease when I was very young, nearing my primary schooling years. She was around the same age as my mother, and has worked here since she could walk. Her mother, and other members of her small family work at the estate as well, each handling a different task and job.

‘’No, I think everything is well actually. If anything it’s a tad loose.’’ I say as she runs her hands down my sides, checking the fabric for any tears. ‘’A tad could mean a lot, Sir. But I trust your reply.’’ She smiles lightly as she brushes off my shoulders before stepping back.

‘’Oh, Niall, I can still remember when you were a little todd, so cute and adorable. Running and racing around the castle with your brother. My most enjoyable part of your childhood was assisting you in a nice park stroll at the end of town. You loved to mess around in the pond. But I’d always have to bring an extra change of attire, because most of the time you would jump in and play with the ducklings. I’ll always remember those times.’’ She smiles sweetly, her eyes watering up.

So I will have to leave the estate, unless I find a companion, then I get to over take the entire palace from my father, which I hope to do, but yet I don’t want to do because that would mean me having to marrying someone I don’t even know, nor care for at all.

‘’I remember most of it.’’ I smile back at her. The large clock tower just outside the estate walls begun to chime loudly, announcing that the hour has come, which ever hour that is though. ‘’Oh my, you’re going to be late, sir. It’s now the twentieth hour.’’ She sighs as she gestures me to continue walking towards the door, which wasn’t far at all.

‘’Keep yourself calm, Ester. If I’m late, I’ll just be late to being early. Besides, it doesn’t start for another hour and a half anyways.’’ I assure her as we reach the door. ‘’You behave yourself, now, you hear? Your mother would love to see you tonight, sir. You look marvelous.’’ She leans up to my cheek, kissing me gently and softly.

A motherly thing to do, and I’ve always loved that because I had some assurance that I had someone that truly cared. My father doesn’t care anymore, he doesn’t. That’s why my brother left as quickly as he could, because we haven’t had any care from him for years, since my mother’s death.

‘’I will, promise.’’ I nod lightly as I make my way through the entrance. I gulp lightly, my father does go overboard too much. There it was, a large, white horse with a carriage behind it, my father sitting inside it, motioning me to hurry and get in, however, I didn’t want to. I’d rather walk then show up in something so extreme, something so.. overdone.

‘’Father, I’m not dancing. I don’t dance, you know this.’’ I protest as he tries to convince it will be the best thing to do tonight. ‘’Niall, you have to dance. Everyone dances, now go.’’ He demands. I’m sick and tired of this, sick of being treated like nothing.

Like a servant.

‘’No, I am not.’’ I shrug my shoulders lightly as I lean on the railing, looking down at the floor below, ball gowns and soft music. ‘’Excuse me?’’ He says, shocked. ‘’I said, no. Clear and simple, no.’’ I say, still gazing down upon the dance floor.

‘’Niall, I’m not going to say it once more, go dance now.’’ He says, assuming that will scare me, I suppose. ‘’And I am not going to repeat myself again, no.’’ I say as I turn to look at him. ‘’Why are you disobeying me all of a sudden?’’ He asks, furrowing his eyebrows at me.

‘’Because, I am not one of your servants. Or one of your workers. I refuse to bow down to what you say. I’m my own person, and I can do what I please. And right now, I do not want to dance, so therefore, I will not.’’ I sigh, rolling my eyes lightly at him. He was such a pest at times, always on my case.

I find myself stepping away from him, heading towards the stair case. But I’m not going to dance or going to chat with random girls, I’m going to get something to eat, my stomach as aching. I did not even get half way towards the stairs before my father called out to me.

‘’Niall James Horan, get your arse back over here now.’’ He sounded stern, he probably looked stern too. But you know what, I do not care anymore, I really don’t. I shake my head lightly as I get to the stair case.

Tonight was not the night for any stupid games or tricks. And tonight was not the night for my father to boss me around. I’m next in line for the thrown, and I can’t wait until I am finally the head of the palace. I’ll have my father working, not the servants.

They will be happy. I will be happy. And my father, well, he’ll be completely miserable and in a living Hell.
