Fanfiction: Success & Failure

Tip: Portraying Your Characters

The Characters: The Most Important Thing

When it comes to characters, you got to know how you want to portray them and how you want to show them to the world. Do you want them to look like a happy and up beat person, or a depressed person? This is very important to remember, very!

Here’s some tips on how to hit the right spot when it comes to portraying characters:

>A character is very important, no matter their role. Mother, father, girlfriend, boyfriend, waitress, bartender, etc.. Everything needs to be shown correctly and clearly.

>>When you are giving the backstory of a character, no matter what POV you use, always remember to tie in important details so that we all know what exactly happened to the person.

>>But if its not a main character, try letting us now their facial expressions, tones of voice, things in that matter.

>>Clothing may not seem so important, but it is. When you describe a character’s attire, try to be specific and perhaps relate them to groups of people. By knowing how they dress, we can suspect a little more about them that you didn't mention before. Example: She had on NIKE running shorts, and a cropped Victoria’s Secret tank top that flowed when the wind hit it. She reminded me of a athletic, but gentle, type person. This always lets us know that who’s ever seeing this person is very curious and pays attention to the little things.

>>ATTITUDE is very important. If you’re doing a punk story, you want to try to make the main guy seem scary, dangerous, and perhaps evil like. SO you must use words to describe the way he feels, or if some one is seeing him. The attitude he gives off is very important. The characters set up the bases for your story. You can’t get to home plate without going to first, second, and third. So, you have to make sure we know the characters are aware of things and of themselves, feelings, thoughts, etc.

>>Vibes. The vibe a character gives off is similar to their attitude, but this is something another character feels while around them. Example: The way his eyes gazed into mine made me feel lost, insecure, but yet.. helpless and struggling.

>>Feelings. When a character is feeling internal pain, suffer, heartache, etc.. we need to know exactly what this feels like for them. Make sure THEY explain the pain in their own ways. Example: The pain in my chest burned like the flames of Hell. I was always afraid of burning too soon.

>>OVERALL TIPS: Just make sure that the character is portrayed by his/her INNER THOUGHTS and the BACKSTORY.
