Chapter One

It was a long shift that day, I remember like it was yesterday. It was a cold and gloomy night in the city as the last costumers headed out. Ivan began to turn off the lights of the Olive Garden we worked at. I grabbed my bag as I headed out after him. He locked the main door as he said his goodbye and thank you for covering for him. I smiled and plugged in my iPod before making my way home in the quiet and dim street. It wasn’t a long stroll, I took short cuts to make it easier to get home before my parents. The usual way would be through the restaurant parking lots, but I decided to take the alley instead.

I began to sing out loud walking in a rush as an object got my attention. My eyes targeted it: a dark outline not moving, just laying there. I could feel my heart race as I got closer to it not knowing if it was a person or just a pile of boxes. I took off one of my earphones as I grabbed a tiny rock and threwit towards the object,there was no reaction.
“h … hello” I asked in a shaky voice, no response.
“Are you asleep?” I made my way to the figure, the light of the cars made it easier to see. It was a young woman: she looked very fragile, kind of like a porcelain doll. Her blonde locks fell down her pale face; she just sat there with no movement of any sort. She looked around my age maybe one or two years older than me. I pressed my figure next to her freezingshoulder.
“Miss? Are you awake?” I said as I tapped her a few times. I got close to her face to see if she was breathing; no air came out of her nose.
“Oh shit” I backed off a bit as I stood there thinking of what to do next. Is she dead? How long as she been there? I asked myself trying not to freak out.
Okay Veronica calm down I said to myself, I took out my phone as I dialed 911 as quickly as I could
“911 what’s your emergency?”
“Yes, this is Veronica umm ...” I didn’t know how to explain what I just found, what if they thought I killed her?
“I FOUND A DEAD BODY IN AN ALLEY”
“I’m going to need you to tell me what street you’re inpleasehun”
“Oh yes, umm it’s between Clover and Chestnut” the lady was so calm, it kind of made me panic a little more.
“Okay Veronica, someone is on its way to help you I’ll stay with you until they arrive okay?”
“Thank you so much.”
I waited there on the phone with Rachel on the other line, I had asked for her name attempting to begin a conversation to calm my nerves. However once the cops and ambulance arrived I couldn’t stop shaking. Once the police men began their investigation I was taken aside and interviewed about the entire situation. I began to explain in full detail.
A little later I was asked if I wanted to go inside the ambulance along with the girl I found in the alley, whose name I found out to be was Glimmer. I agreed and climbed in the ambulance.
“Oh man, looks like we have another attempt suicide” said the woman in the back with me and Glimmer.
During the ride to the hospital Glimmer was revived but was still unconscious.
“Do you think.. she’ll make it?” I asked listening to her irregular heartbeat.
“I’m not so sure; whatever drugs she took seemed to be pretty strong. Let’s hope she makes it through tonight” Said the nurse with a sad look on her face. She didn’t look so old, maybe in her thirties with short brown hair with a few white strands popping out of her ponytail.
Once we arrived to the hospital the scene turned incredibly chaotic. Everyone looked as if they had something important to do running around the hallways occasionally yelling out to another fellow nurse or doctor asking for help. Glimmer was taken into a room quickly while I was forced to wait in the waiting room.
About half an hour later a young man with blondish hair came running in towards the nurse behind the directory desk, “WHERE’S GLIMMER?!”
I couldn’t quite hear what she said, however the young man was nearly yelling his head off.
“IM NIALL. NIALL HORAN, GLIMMERS BOYFRIEND. NOW TELL ME WHERE SHE IS. NOW!” he tried to compose himself while the nurse directed him towards the waiting room because no one was allowed to see Glimmer at that moment. He forced a smile to the nurse as he sat across from me in the small room.
While we waited for the doctor, I took out my iPhone and messaged my mom:
Me: Hey mom, I’m going to be a little late tonight. I’ll explain once I’m home, don’t worry I’m not hurt or anything!
I continued to mess with my phone to entertain myself while I waited, Niall on the other hand looked like he was about to lose it. That’s when the doctor came in and called my name.
“Are you Veronica?” he asked
“Y-es, did she make it?” I stammered.
“Why yes! Looks like Glimmer will be making a full recovery, but she’s going to have to take it easy for a little while” as the doctor spoke to me Niall stood up along with four other guys I didn’t notice before. Niall quickly introduced himself and again asked where Glimmer was. Once the doctor told all six of use what room she was resting in, we made our way towards the room. No one bothered to introduce themselves, clearly knowing what was more important at the moment.
While we were walking I couldn’t help but notice the five boys walking next to me. They all looked like athletes. One with a head full of curly hair paired with green eyes, another with a head of short hair, the third with semi short brown hair with darkish green eyes. The fourth had longer hair but styled differently and had big brown eyes along with beautifully long eyelashes. And of course the last was Niall, brownish hair with some blonde in it and with blue eyes.
We got to the room and found Glimmer conscious. Her eyes widened once she saw the five boys along with me.
“Baby! What were you thinking?!” said Niall as he rushed to her side. Before she even said anything back, a nurse came in and ushered me to explain how I saved Glimmer.
“Well, um I was walking home… taking a short cut through the alley.. I saw something and made my way towards the object… then realized it was a person..” I trailed off remembering how scared I was “you just laid there, not moving or anything it scared me shitless… I called the cops not knowing what else to do..and well, now we’re here” I said giving Glimmer a slight smile. Once I finished, I couldn’t help but jump as I felt a pair of arms hug my body.
“Thank you so much for saving my little girl!” said the middle aged woman, whom I suppose was her mother. Her father did the same. I couldn’t help but feel slightly embarrassed because of all the attention my act was causing. At that time Glimmer began speaking:
“Hi..thank you.. so much.. I’m sorry I didn’t know what I was doing..” she said in a weak voice. I made my way towards her bed while the rest followed.
There was not much talking from me for the next hour or so, her parents remained with her during that time and so did Niall. I was introduced to the rest of the boys; Harry, Liam, Zayn, and Louis. They seemed nice, however, a bit cheeky. After a while, I exchanged numbers with Glimmer and made my way back home since it was getting pretty late. Lucky for me, I lived about three blocks from the hospital so I decided to walk instead of taking the offers from Glimmers parents to give me a ride.
Once again I was alone walking under the light of the moon, listening to Lana Del Rey. While I walked I received a text message:
Glimmer: Hi, thank you once again. I was wondering if you won’t mind visiting me again..so I could know more about you if you don’t mind. J
Me: Of course I don’t mind! I’ll come and stop by tomorrow!
I had a feeling this series of events will never be erased from my head.
