Saving A Fallen Star (Book 1 in Saved series)

Chapter 12: Interrogation

Kaya's P.O.V.

After the boys left, Cassy didn't wait a minute to begin interrogating me. She questioned what, when, why and how. (She didn't do who or where because she was there.) Her last question made me think. Was he worth it? Was he worth the pain? My first instinct was to say yes but, I barely knew him. Thankfully my mom came in and saved me from answering.

"Kaya! Oh my goodness. Look at you! Are you alright dear?"

"Yes mom, I'm quite alright."

The doctor, who was taking care of me, came in." Are you Mrs. Smith?"

"Yes, how bad is it?"

" To put it simply and shortly, she has three options,
1) Be stuck in a wheelchair for the rest of her life,
2) Have metal bones inserted, and be put in rehab for a couple of months or
3) Have her lower leg amputated."

"Why does she have to be in a wheelchair for the rest of her life?" my mom asked.

"Her leg was so badly broken that even if her leg healed correctly, it wouldn't function very well and be so much weaker, easier to break."

My mom gave me a despairing glance.

I was horrified, crippled, Iron-Girl, or no leg!!?? My life had taken an instant nose-dive; running was going to be my future, my ticket to college, my JOB. But now my whole future had just blown up in my face. Things couldn't possibly get worse, but I was wrong. It got worse, a lot worse.
“Can we talk it over?" my mom asked.

"Of course you have two days." 'My' doctor then walked out.

My mom sat down in a chair and looked at me. "Why Kaya? Why'd you do it?" she then broke down into tears. My mom isn't heartless it's just, my father died a couple of years ago so money was something we had very little of.

"Mom you've always told me to do the right thing and accept the consequences. So that's what I did." 'Mostly' I added mentally. I watched my mom carefully.

She calmed down quickly, looked at me sternly and said, "Well, it's your choice then. You choose crippled or iron bones!"

"Mom..."

"Your brothers will be home soon. I have to go."

That was the biggest load of crap I had ever heard. My brothers were home all day and had no play dates. I saw the hurt in her eyes as she lied and walked away. But she did it with dignity. She didn't look back once, which hurt a lot. Cassy had stayed quiet during the whole conversation.

"Kaya, I could pay your bill if you helped work for it."

"Cassy...I....I don't know what to do!" I started to cry again and Cassy came over and hugged me tightly. She really is the best of friend's. "I'll think it over tonight and let you know tomorrow." I said.

We then both fell asleep. Cassy in the window seat and me, well, you know where.
