Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Thirty-Five.

It’s been nearly two months since the incident and this is the first time Luke and I have sat in the same room together with our friends. It was like there was a sheet separating us from them. We may have been sitting in the same room and making conversation with them, but everything felt so different. They treated us differently and it drove me crazy. No one was acting like themselves. Ella and Mikey weren’t their happy-go-lucky selves, Ashton and Kaylee weren’t talking about Josie, and the worst of the bunch were Steph and Calum. Typically, they were so caught up in themselves, but today they didn’t say a word. Steph was three weeks overdue and she was doing everything she could to go into labor, but we didn’t hear anything about that. It’s like no one knew what to say and when they said anything, it felt like it was the wrong thing to say.

“I read online that swinging on a swing could induce labor.” I spoke, taking a sip of my tea as I stared at Steph. She cocked her head as a small smile spread on her lips.
“What?” She asked with a slight laugh.
“Yeah, some girl posted about how she was like 39 weeks and walked to a park and swung as high as she could and then when she stood up, her water broke. That’s why in some labor and delivery rooms, they have those weird swings. I guess they like progress labor.” She nodded slowly as I spoke.
“I guess that makes sense.” She smiled. “I just want him out already!” We all shared a laugh.
“I totally get that!” Kaylee pitched in. “Once you get down to the third trimester, everything moves so slow! Like I can’t imagine being overdue!” I nodded even though I couldn’t quite understand.
“I’m so envious of you two. We’re still trying. With no luck.” I watched as Ella spoke, Mikey squeezing her hand. A small smile spread across my lips as I looked at Luke. He shared my smile.

Luke and I sat at a small table on the pier, sharing a dinner. He’d asked me out to a dinner after we got back from Kaylee’s, and it had been anything but awkward. He was kind, complimented me, and made me feel like everything was back to normal. I was so grateful to have him. We were laughing, smiling, and having a great time. Luke reached across the table and grabbed my hand.
“Do you want to dance?” He asked, gesturing to the boardwalk. I nodded, noting the light instrumental music. Luke stood, grabbing my hand and pulling me up and to his body. We gently swayed to the music, ignoring all the other diners.

“I still love you, Romy.” He squeezed my hand, making me smile.
“I still love you, too, Luke.” I laughed, setting my head on his chest. He pulled me closer.
“Do you think we can make this work?” He asked, kissing the top of my head.
“Yeah.” My voice was confident.
“I really want to stay with you.” He gently pulled away, staring at me.
“Then stay.” My smile was so wide I’m sure I looked ridiculous. All of a sudden, he got down on one knee and pulled out the most beautiful ring I’ve ever seen. My smile fell into a gasp.
“Will you marry me?” He asked, a nervous smile taking place. I could hardly contain my smile as I pulled him up to stand by his hand and looked him in the eye.
“As long as we can try for kids again.” My voice was a whisper as I bit my lip.
“It’s a deal!” He laughed, causing me to laugh as well as my eyes began to water. Luke put the ring on my finger before grabbing my face and pressing his lips against mine. We stayed like that for a while. Holding each other, kissing each other.

We stayed like that until we were forced to break away because Luke’s phone began to ring. He still held me as he spoke on the phone. Excited, he looked at me and started to laugh.
“What?” I asked, giggling as he hung up the phone.
“Steph just went into labor!” He exclaimed, pulling me back into a kiss. It was just then that I knew everything is going to be okay. I was going to be happy again.
