Good Intentions ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Twenty-Nine.

I sat across from my mum and Owen at dinner table. I’d called mum up earlier and asked to talk to her so I could break the news, and she invited me over. I didn’t want to come see her, but I knew if I didn’t there would be a huge issue. Dinner was thoroughly awkward, as I hadn’t seen either of them without special occassion since my mum lost her baby when I was 18. I feared telling her for that reason, I knew she’d freak out, and I didn’t want Owen there in the first place.

“So, Romina… You and Luke are back together?” Owen asked, trying to make conversation.
“Yes.” My voice seemed almost monotone. “Actually, that’s why I’m here.” I took a sip of my water.
“Are you engaged?” Mum asked. “You’re not wearing a ring.” She frowned in disapproval as I calmly shook my head.
“No… I just… I’m going back to school. Cosmetology school. And I’m staying at the office until I find a job doing that.” I paused, judging their reactions.
“That’s very nice, sweetie, but I don’t see how that has to do with Luke.” Mum confessed, folding her hands. She peered at me like she knew and I felt uncomfortable.
“Um… Well we’re having a baby. I’m pregnant.” Mum smiled at me lightly while Owen sighed.
“That’ll ruin all the plans you’ve made.” He spoke his mind. “Are you sure it’s a good idea to have it?” Mum gasped, slapping his arm.
“Owen!” She scolded, “You will not talk to my daughter that way! If she wants to keep it, we will support her! I can’t believe you.” She glared at him. “I’d like to talk to Romina alone.” She smiled at me as Owen excused himself. Her hand found it’s way to mine.

“I’m happy for you.” She smiled. “If this is what you want, I’m so happy. How far along are you?”
“It is.” I smiled, not being able to believe how well she took it. “I’m 13 weeks and 2 days.”
“Good… But… I just want you to be careful, okay? You know this, I’ve told you a million times, but I’ve had such a hard problem getting pregnant. All those miscarriages until I finally had you… My miracle. And after you, we lost Sophia… I guess what I’m getting at is that you should get checked up often. I’d hate for what happened to me to happen to you.” Standing, I hugged my mum.
“Thank you.” I whispered into her. “So,” I pulled away. “Do you prefer Grandma or Nana?” She laughed.
“Oh, both make me sound so old! How about Mimsy?” I laughed with her.
“It suits you well.”

“Good morning, you two!” Dr. Alver spoke, setting his clipboard on the desk. “I’m Dr. Alver. You must be Romina and Luke.” He smiled. “It’s a pleasure to meet both of you, I’m happy I was referred. Now, is this our first ultrasound?” I nodded eagerly, smiling as he sat down. “First child?” Again, I nodded. “Okay. Every appointment we are going to start off with some questions. I’ll ask you how you’re feeling, if you have concerns. Then we’ll do some measurements and I’ll feel your stomach. After that we’ll do an ultrasound. Sound good? How far along are we?”
“15 weeks exactly.” I bit my lip.
“Alright. Have you felt any morning sickness?” He spoke fast.
“Yes. When I eat something with bread, I puke.” He nodded.
“That’s normal. Have you had any problems with the prenatal vitamins?” I shook my head. “Okay, good. I’m glad. Any abnormal fluids, spotting, bleeding, discharge?” He peered at me, his face warm. He had dark brown hair and green eyes, stubble lining his chin. His thin glasses didn’t fit his face and his wedding ring was too small for his finger.
“Nope.” He scribbled on his clipboard before standing and gesturing to a scale and measuring stick hanging on the wall.

“Alright,” He nodded. “Perfect wait for 15 weeks. Now please lie down on the table and lift up your shirt.” I did as I was directed, revealing my stomach. It hardly stuck out at all; nothing compared to Steph’s beautifully round belly. She was currently 6 months, and much bigger than we’re used to seeing her. Dr. Alver felt around my stomach before squirting a gel on and pressing the transducer lightly against my skin and swirling the gel around. “Are we going to want pictures?” He asked, glancing at Luke who was staring at the screen.
“Yes, lots!” I exclaimed, grabbing Luke’s hand. A quiet, fast thumping noise sounded and I immediately got worried.
‘Don’t worry, that’s the heartbeat.” Dr. Alver laughed.
“Oh.” I laughed, “I don’t think that sounds much like a train. Everyone says it does, but I think it sounds more like… A horse. Like running.” Dr. Alver smiled.
“Yes, we get that one a lot, too.” He commented, fiddling with the transducer.

“Here it is.” He smiled. My head turned to the screen. “Here’s the head, body, the stomach, legs, and arms. I think it might be sucking it’s thumb but it’s hard to tell because of how early in the pregnancy it is.”
“Wow.” I whispered, my eyes watering. “It’s so tiny!” I laughed.
“It’s the size of an apple. About 2 and a half pounds. Right now, it can make faces like frown and smile. It doesn’t mean anything, though. It’s like stretching for the fetus.” Luke and I smiled at each other. Dr. Alver took the transducer off my stomach and began wiping it with a paper towel. “Everything looks great.” He admitted. “Just keep taking your vitamins and get ready to head out, I’ll go grab your pictures.”

“Isn’t it weird?” Luke asked as he hung the one of the pictures on our bedroom wall. “How beautiful it is? We haven’t even seen the face and I still think it’s the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen.” He sighed, sitting next to me on the bed. “I can’t believe we’re doing this.” He whispered. “I love you so much, Romina. You have no idea how much I love you.”
“I love you too, Luke.” He smiled, turning the volume on his phone up. He was playing some music while moving his clothes to my drawers. Standing up, he held out his hand. “Let’s dance.” He laughed, “I know it’s stupid and cheesy but I just want to dance with you.” I took his hand, allowing him to pull me up. He held my body close to his, wrapping his arms around my waist as mine snaked across his shoulders. I stared up at him, smiling as we swayed to the beat. It wasn’t a slow song, but we were in our own little world, dancing with each other. He placed a small kiss on my forehead before smiling. I set my head on his chest and closed my eyes, thinking about how happy I am right now.
