Adventures in England

Chapter 1

Cassy’s POV
“Yes mom, I just got out of class. I’ll see you tonight,” I say with annoyance in my voice.

She has been badgering me nonstop about the fact that its Christmas break and that I finally get to come home. I live 6 hours away from my home town in Central Illinois, so it’s not like I never come home but every week away is a year to my mom.

As I drift my focus back to the conversation I hear her asking if I had gotten my letter yet.
“moooom don’t you think I would’ve started with that?” I stated.

As I look at my watch I realize it is 2:30 and the mail should be here. Before she can reply I decide to end the conversation with a quick- “I’m going to go check my mail now, bye I love you.”

I run across campus to my dorm. The whole time the only thing I can focus on is the anticipation of what is waiting for me in my mail box. People are just blurs in my vision as I tunnel through the trees and up the sidewalk. I finally see it, my dorm. Any other day of the week I would've stopped to admire the icicles hanging down from the brick building and the trees bending under the snow. But I am focused; as I make it into the building I slow my run to a quick walk.

People keep on giving me weird looks. But I barely notice as turn the corner of the mail room I come face to face with my roommate Rosaline.

“Have you gotten your mail yet?” I ask.

“Ya, I just got it, go grab yours and we can open them together,” Rosaline replied.

I could tell she was nervous about it because her voice was shaking. I ran to my box, my hand was trembling so hard I didn’t think I would ever get the key into the lock.

As I pull out the letter, my anticipation builds. I walk over to Rosaline who is just staring at the letter.

I laugh at her and say, “are you trying to read its mind?”

She laughed back and I could see the anxiety melt away from her shoulders. “No, I’m just trying to mentally prepare myself for a denial,” she said.

“Don’t be silly we are going to get in and then we will go out celebrating like we planned.” I reminded her.

She nodded in agreement.

“ok, then we might as well get this over with,” I say, losing my confidence.
As we both open our letters our eyes grow bigger as the words:
‘Dear, Ms. McBride we are pleased to inform you…’ came into view. That’s all I needed, I couldn't even finish the letter. I look up at Rosaline who is just staring at the letter with the brightest smile on her face I knew it was good news.

----------- At the restaurant later

The restaurant is one of those fancy places college students usually only get to experience except when their families are in town, so this is our way of treating ourselves.

I sit back in my seat and just take in the scene. We all sit at a dimly lit table, the three girls sitting around me are sharing a laugh. All of our friends had gotten in as well so to say the mood was high is an understatement. The more we talk the more I come to terms I with the fact that I am done with my first semester of college.

As I sit there and think about how wonderful my life is I suddenly start to feel a buzzing in my pocket. I grab my phone and realize I’m getting a call from my aunt, which is strange since I’m going to see her tomorrow. I push away from the table trying to not interrupt the girls’ fun.

I walk to the restroom and shut the door as I hit the send button and put the phone up to my ear. “Hello?” I say quizzically.

“Oh Cassy, I hope I didn't catch you at a bad time. I just have some great news I couldn't wait until tomorrow to tell you” My aunt said.

I could hear the excitement in her voice so I decided not to say anything back because she was going to pop out the information either way.

Proving me to be correct she blurted, “My request got accepted!! I am now the head anesthesiologist at Beckenham Hospital in England!!”

It took me a minute to process this information, but as I came to terms with it I tuned back in the conversation:

“…. I am so happy for this. I start the second week in January. And I know that doesn't give me a lot of time to pack or to move things. Which is why I called and told you now. I leave the

January 4th, so I will barely see you once get here.” She said rambling.
As she paused I decided it was my turn to talk, I couldn't contain my excitement as I yelled,

“Congrats, I am soo proud of you! But I will definitely miss you.”
At that she simply stated, “You can visit anytime you’d like, just give me a weeks’ notice and I will make all the arrangements. I know you will love it here. But I've taken too much of your time already, I’ll leave you to your friends. Goodbye darling.”

As she hung up I walked back into the dining room I see that my friends were still sitting and chatting. I sat down and joined the conversation but my mind kept going back to my aunt’s offer of going to visit.

Today had been filled with great news, but it wasn't until much later that I would realize just how much that one day would affect the rest of my life.
