Chapter 18

Addie’s POV
I wake up the next morning to the sound of my alarm. I didn’t have a nightmare tonight, and I am happy for it. I take a quick shower and put on dark jeans shirt and a cardigan. Mom has made waffles. It’s still kinda early, so I sit in the kitchen, eating waffles. Cal texts me that he’s ready and to text him when I am. and I invite him for waffles.
Aggie is sitting on the other high chair, eating her waffles. Someone rings the doorbell.
“It’s open!” I shout. Calum enters. “Help yourself” I tell him, scrolling through my dashboard on tumblr on my phone.
“Good morning to you too” He says, taking a waffle. Aggie stares at him. I don’t pay that much attention.
When I’m done with my waffle, I get up, and turn to Calum.
“Ready?” I ask. He nods, and takes the last bite of his waffle. Aggie stares at us.
“Do you want a ride as well?” Calum asks her. Aggie looks at me, and then smiles at Calum.
“I’m fine. Thanks” She politely declines. Good. Calum gives her a thumbs up, mouth full of waffles, and then we’re out.
We make no stops as we drive directly to school. We’re in the hallway when the bell rings.
“See you at lunch” He says to me and then we part. AP Psychology is entertaining. Mikey asks me how I’m doing and I just say that I’m fine and he doesn’t press it.
In Math, Calum pokes me with his pen. He is sitting right behind me, but I can’t turn around because Mr. Law would freak, as he usually does. So Calum pokes me again, and I chuckle. And then he leans forward on his table. I feel his hot breath on my neck, and it makes goose bumps raise on my arms.
“We’re going at Ash’s after school” He whispers. I feel as if my organs are doing flips. I really hope that’s not the case…”You’re coming?”
I nod. I hear him shifting, and then I miss the warm sensation on my neck. Why on earth is he doing this to me. It’s like he knows that I like him. Can he read my mind? Calum if you can read my mind, cough.
Nothing.
But he wouldn’t cough because he won’t want me knowing that he can read my mind. I’m literally digging a hole for myself right now…if he can read my mind that is.
It turns out, he cannot, in fact, read my mind. Unless he is keeping it cool. Then I’m screwed.
I walk to Art and we have a little history lesson for Van Gogh, and then we have to paint what we drew last time. She is all about embracing your own style, so mine is a bit abstract.
After Art is done, my hands are covered in paint, and it takes me a while to wash it off. When I finally find Mikey and Luke at the usual table, they already have their food. I leave my phone, and turn to walk back to the cafeteria. Calum blocks my way and gives me a plate full of French fries.
“For me?” I joke but he nods. And I arch an eyebrow.
“You fed me waffles this morning. I’m feeding you fries for lunch” He smiles and sits down. I sit across from him. Mikey eyes him, and I think he rolls his eyes. I thank him, and dig into my plate of fries.
Marissa walks by and glares at me. I make a face at her, and she just keeps walking. Calum doesn’t even glance at her. I know he was there yesterday when I kind of shut down in front of them. Did he talk to her? I never asked.
“You look kinda pale” Mikey says to Luke. He looks like he hasn’t slept.
“I think I have a fever” He says. Mikey puts the back of his palm on Luke’s cheeks.
“You’re burning up, mate” He says removing his hand from Luke’s face.
“It sucks getting sick before the weekend” He says.
“Because you are such a party animal with a social life and all that” Mikey jokes. I can’t help but laugh.
After lunch, Luke decides to leave, and we continue with our classes. By the end of the day, everyone is talking about a birthday party some guy is hosting, and that everyone is invited.
We get into Calum’s car, Mikey sitting in the front this time, and the three of us drive to Ash’s. The weather is a bit better. At least it’s not raining.
At Ash’s it goes pretty much the same way it always does. We all sit in the garage, and then band for a while, and then Ash supplies us with beer and snacks and we talk and laugh, and it’s really easy to be in their presence. Takes my mind off of things.
“You guys wanna go to John’s party?” Mikey asks, sipping beer.
“Who is John? I swear, I know like 4 people in this school” I say. Cal laughs.
“It’s his birthday, and he is having a party, and everyone is going” Mikey explains. As if that makes things clear now. It doesn’t. Calum looks at me, as if expecting an answer.
“I’m up for it” I say, shrugging and drinking my beer.
“Cal is up for it” Mikey points at Calum and then turns to Ash “You?”
Ash nods.
“Alright, but I have to call Elena” He says.
“How long is she in town?” Calum asks.
“She’s leaving on Monday” Ash says.
“Awwww” Mikey claps his hands. “Well, you guys should totally get wasted and go crazy tonight.” Ash gives Mikey a mischievous smile, as he texts. “Ah kids. They grow up so fast” Mikey wipes an artificial tear from his eye.
“But can I go home first?” I say. They look at me confused “I want to change” I say, motioning with my hands towards my outfit.
“Why?” Calum and Mikey ask at the same time.
“Because I want to look nice for my enemies” I say, slowly getting up.
“Fine, I’ll drive you” Cal says. I glance at the other boys. Ash is on his phone, not really paying attention, and Mikey is looking down at his shoes or something. He looks a bit annoyed. Is he ok? Note to self, talk to Mikey.
“Cool” I say. We walk to his car and the drive to my house is quiet. We both get out of the car and he follows me to my door.
“I have to go in from the front so my mom can see that I am home” I say and walk to the front door, taking my key out.
“What am I suppose to do?” He says, laughing.
“Wait by my room” I say and then enter. My mom is in the kitchen talking on the phone.
“Alright. Have a safe flight” She says, and then looks at me. “Hey honey” She says.
“I’m just here to change. I’m gonna go out” I say walking to my room.
“And where are you goin?” She asks me.
“To this birthday party” I say stopping to look at her.
“Who’s birthday party?” She asks. Ughhhh
“A friend’s. You don’t now him” I answer. And neither do I.
“Okay. Be back by midnight” she says, and walk to the living room. That’s highly unlikely.
“Kay” I say and go in my room. I open my door and Cal comes in, making himself comfortable on my bed. “So is it like a fancy party or like ratchet?” I ask, opening my closet. I hear Calum’s laughter, and I smile.
“It’s casual, I think? I mean you can dress up if you want” He answers.
“Kay!” I say and take a bunch of clothes to the bathroom with me. I try them on, and at one point Calum is making fun of me for talking so damn long.
“Beauty can’t be rushed!” I yell from behind the closed door.

Calum’s POV

I lie on her bed, looking around her room. She has so many books on her shelves, and on her nightstand, and on the floor. They are everywhere.
“Alright, I’m gonna go change too. You’re making me anxious” I say and when she mumbles an okay, I jog to my house.
“Where are you going?” Mali asks me as I come out of my room all dressed. Well, I’m not really dressed up. I have a button up shirt and black skinny jeans. I walk down the stairs.
“To a party” I say, putting on my black shoes.
“Is Addie going? Is that why you’re all dressed up?” She teases me, sitting on the stairs.
“Yes” I say and she giggles “To the first one!” I quickly add, but it’s too late.
“Yeah okay, sure. Have fun. Wear protection” She says, and disappears in her room. I shake my head and go to Addie’s.
The door is left opened and when I come in it smells like a girl’s perfume, something sweet but not strong, like Marissa’s perfumes. She is still in the bathroom.
“Addie, it’s getting dark outside. What the hell are you doing in there” I say, lying on her bed again.
“Magic!” She answers. “Alright, I’m done” She says and after a moment she comes out. My breath catches. I feel like I’m in one of those stupid chick-flicks Mali makes me watch with her. She is wearing a black long sleeved one suit, or whatever they are called. Like a jumpsuit. Her hair falls around her shoulders. She has high-heeled ankle boots and is wearing a black leather jacket.
Her face, though. Her make up isn’t complicated – cat eyed eyeliner, and a gloss on her lips, but she looks so…”Gorgeous” I whisper to myself. She doesn’t hear it. She doesn’t even notice me staring at her. Her every curve is pronounced. She attaches a necklace above the V-neck of the jumpsuit and grabs a purse from a drawer, putting her phone, keys and her wallet in there.
“You cleaned up well” She says. I am nothing compered to her. I can’t stop staring at her. “What?! Stop staring at me like that, you’re scaring me” She laughs.
“You’re not bad yourself” I say. She says goodbye to her mom, and then we’re walking to my car. I open the door for her and she smiles at me, sitting in the passenger’s seat.
My heart is beating faster and faster as we drive to Ash’s. It’s almost completely dark outside, and the part is starting right about now.
“What inspired you to get all dressed up?” I ask Addie, we’re almost at Ash’s.
“I don’t know” She says, shrugging. “Felt like it”
“Valid reason” I say, nodding. And it is. I am incredibly attracted to her right now.
When we come into the garage, Mikey’s jaw drops, like in a cartoon.
“You look like a badass ninja!” He jumps up.
“Can you guys stop staring at me like that?” She laughs. I laugh, averting my eyes, but Mikey is still looking at her. Ash comes in with wine, and we start our pre-party.
Elena joins us. She is also dressed up. Red lips, eyeliner, a black dress and similar ankle-high high-heeled boots.
“What is with you guys?!” Mikey asks, drinking his wine, grinning. I’m sitting next to Addie, and I can smell her perfume.
“Dressed to kill” Elena jokes and Addie agrees. They both start laughing and talking about how dressing up gives them so much more confidence, and how no girl should dress up for male attention, but for herself as well. I can’t concentrate on their conversation, because Addie is next to me and I can feel the heat coming from her body. Mikey is in a similar situation. He looks at Addie, from time to time, and doesn’t really pay attention to their conversation.

A few wine glasses later, my sight is a bit dizzy and Mikey’s eyes are glossy. Elena seems unfazed by the alcohol, as if it doesn’t affect her, Ash is grinning, like he always does when he is drunk-ish, and Addie is laughing at everything. She looks more high than drunk, but oh well.
Then, we realize that there is no designated driver between us, and that we’ll have to walk to John’s house.
So we start walking. The air is chilly. I start talking with Elena and Ash about Elena’s alcohol immunity, when I notice that Addie and Michael have fallen behind. When I turn, I see their arms locked. She is laughing so much, and Michael is explaining something with grand hand movements. I pretend not to look, and I tell myself that there is nothing there between them. They are friends.

Addie’s POV

Michael’s body is warm and, even though alcohol is running through my veins, I am still cold and shivering a bit. Should’ve brought a thicker jacket. Cold wind blows my hair and stings my cheeks. Michael is explaining how he managed to skip Math class last year, by literally jumping out of the window. Of course, the classroom was on the ground floor, so it wasn’t that high, but I have Mr. Law and I know how strict he is. It takes balls to get out in the middle of the class through a window.
I can’t stop laughing.
“Stop it, stop it” I hit him, actual tears coming from my eyes “My make up” I say, fanning my face, forcing my eyes to dry.
Michael laughs at me.
“My make up, my make up” He imitates me, which makes me laugh even more.
After what seems like forever, we get to John’s house. Whoever he is. I hope I don’t get uninvited at the door. That would be embarrassing.
I do not get uninvited; in fact, John comes up to us and tells us how happy he is that we showed up. He is so drunk. We find a spot in the kitchen. There’s punch, and there’s alcohol in that punch, no doubt.
“Do you want a drink?” Mikey shouts in my ear. The music is so loud. I nod, not bothering to ruin my vocal cords. He goes by the punch bowl and waits to put punch in two cups.
“Hey” Cal stands in front of me, a little too close. I don’t step back.
“Hi” I say, and smile at him. I turn to where I saw Elena and Ash, but they are not there anymore. “Where did they-“
“They went to dance” He answers my question before I can ask it. “Do you want to join them?” He extends his hand. I look at him. His eyes are shining, and a bit bloodshot, and he is swaying a little bit.
“Yo” Mikey comes and hands me the drink. I mumble a thank you. Calum puts his hand down, as if defeated. He doesn’t look at me, just walks away. Without saying anything, his head down, and walks away. Mikey is oblivious. I stare after Calum. He looks back, glances at Michael next to me, and disappears into the crowd.
