Chasing Calls

Prologue

INDIANA'S POV

My office block smelt like burnt oak and a hint of caramel; incense sticks that played with my senses like wildfire in the wind. A collective of late nights and early mornings rummaging over paperwork with a fine tooth comb and fueling myself with nothing but caffeine had become ridiculous.

Tired, overworked and exhausted were just some of the world that could possibly come close to explaining how I felt. Euphoric was what I would be at the end of this years tax season. A million and one figures danced through my mind like a symphony of problematic sin. Just one more equation, just one more cup of coffee, just one more spreadsheet typed up and saved.

Just one more and I’d be able to call it a night.

Frustrated and confused, I dropped the biro I was holding onto the desk and brushed my fingers back through my hair furiously jamming them at where it had once been neatly thrown up into a ponytail. Perhaps I was pushing myself too much, perhaps I’d come to my senses about not being a hero. Hands running down my face, I felt my engagement ring come into contact with my skin – cheeks flushing a dozen shades of red and warming as pure delight consumed me.

With a honeymoon in plan; after the big day – I wouldn’t have to see another piece of paperwork for months.

The phone rang, catching me off guard and whilst licking my lips, I answered as dully as I felt.

“Good evening”, I questioned myself, eyes darting straight for the time on the bottom corner of my computer screen, “J.P Accountancy and Law Firm this is…”

“Indiana..”

Sitting straight at my call of my own name, I sat back in my chair and took a cliché deep breath wondering whom this was; what kind of games they were going to play. I wasn’t able to recognize the deep voice. Why wouldn’t they let me finish my introduction?

“Yes, this is Indiana Harris”, I mumbled quietly yet assertive. There was a quiver in my voice that I hoped only I could notice. “Can I help you?

“This call can not be traced. This call was meant for only you. I am able to reunite you with a lost love, forever. I am, Indiana, prepared to prove this by giving you a full week with them, yet if you wish for that to continue, I’ll have to take the life of the person closest to you…”
