Make It Stop ⇼ Luke Hemmings

Twenty-Nine.

“This is nice.” I smiled lightly at Luke as we enjoyed our pasta. Liz had prepared a nice dinner for us and took Luke’s dad and brothers out for a while so we could have a nice little date.
“Yeah… You look good.” He half smiled.
“Thanks.” I muttered, picking at my pasta.
“Is it okay?” He asked, trying to hide a glance at his phone.
“Yeah, it’s wonderful.” I lied. I couldn’t help but think about everything that’s happened in the past few days—his grandmother’s passing, the funeral, him wanting to leave, staying, not telling me he loves me, his distant attitude, his mood swings, everything—and here we are, sitting across from each other and having dinner, pretending that everything is okay and we are not broken.

With small talk and glances at phones, Luke and I finished our dinner and decided to move to the couch, watching a film called American Mary, and cuddling. His chest was pressed into my back while his arm slung across my stomach. He held me impossibly close to him, but it felt like we miles apart.
“Luke?” I asked quietly, turning to him and allowing him to tighten his grip on me so I wouldn’t fall off the small couch.
“Yeah?” He looked past me, to the telly.
“Are we okay?” My question caught him off guard. But before he had a chance to respond, Calum walked into the living room. Luke immediately let go of me and our attention diverted to him.

“Sorry if I’m-” Luke cut him off immediately.
“You’re not.” He snapped as I turned to Calum, my back pressed on Luke’s chest once again.
“I just came by to give you your phone charger.” He held a wire up, tossing it on the nearest sofa.
“Thanks, mate.” Luke muttered, his hand snaking back around my waist.
“Alright, well…” Calum’s voice trailed off as he shoved his hands in his pockets. “I-uh-I have to go. Steph is waiting in the car.” He ran a hand through his hair.
“Bye Cal.” Luke and I spoke simultaneously.

Luke and I were sitting in his backyard, staring up at the sky, somewhat watching the clouds, and somewhat speaking about troubling things.
“I just really miss her, you know?” Luke sighed.
“I understand.” I whispered, knowing he was talking of his grandmother. “How’s everyone else holding up?” I asked, as I haven’t spoke much to Liz lately.
“Mum is a wreck. She’s been crying, which is understandable… I mean, it was her mum. Dad is emotionless, like always. Jack and Ben have just been out with their girlfriends a lot lately, so I’m not really sure.” He sighed. “Everything is just weird.”
“I’m sorry.” We fell silent.

“Mum got into a car crash last night.” I told Luke. He didn’t answer. “Did you hear me?” I sat up, staring at him. He nodded slowly. “So… What?” I scoffed. “You’re not going to say anything?” He merely shrugged. “Luke.” I frowned. “I just told you that my mum got into a car crash. You don’t have anything to even say about it?” He chewed at his lip ring.
“There’s nothing to really say…” His voice trailed off.
“You could at least ask if she’s okay.” I grumbled, standing up. “Whatever, Luke. I’m done.” I began walking away in annoyance and anger. How could he be so cruel? It’s so hard to believe that even after I gave him my heart, he still acts as if he doesn’t have one. The moment I knew I had to leave him was the moment I told him about the car accident and he didn’t respond, but I couldn’t bring it upon myself to do so; I merely walked away.

“Romy!” He called after me, running and catching up with me as I entered his house, stepping in the kitchen. He grabbed my hand, gently yanking me back. “Oh, come on.” He dryly laughed as I pulled my hand away from his. “Romy, stop.” I rolled my eyes, looking at him.
“Why?” I demanded. “Give me a reason why I shouldn’t up and leave right now?” I crossed my arms.
“Why would you?” He was confused, but at the same time, he didn’t care at all.
“Do you even care?” I asked.
“Romy.” He tried to reason. “Baby, it doesn’t really matter.” I was appalled.
“Do you know what, Luke?” I rhetorically asked. “I’m so done. I can’t believe you could be so heartless. You’ve been sad, moody, angry, and distant. I’ve put up with all of it… Because I love you. But you’re not trying at all. And things never work out when someone stops trying, do they?” Luke stared at the floor, and I had enough. “Call me when you’re done being an arse.” I spat, turning around and making my way to his door. He immediately followed me and called out as soon as I touched the handle.

“I’m not sure if I want to marry you anymore.” He blurted out, shattering my heart into a million pieces. I didn’t turn around, though. I didn’t want him to see that I was already crying. “I have something to say.” He announced.
“So say it.” I whispered, still holding onto the door.
“I’ve been seeing Madison.” It came as too much of a shock, as I knew it would happen sooner or later. I just didn’t think it would hurt so bad. I was never ready for the impact.
“Luke?” I asked, holding my head high and still refusing to look at him. “I never want to see you again.” I selfishly spoke, opening the door and slamming it before walking home and promising myself I wouldn’t text him.

Notes

Sorry this chapter is crappy and short. I just have SO much on my mind right now, and it gave me inspiration to write the crash scene with her mum. I actually got into a car crash today, I was driving and it was terrifying, and when I texted a boy whom I've been talking to for quite a while, he never responded(I know he saw it, too, because it was on snapchat). So I was pretty torn up about that. Thankfully I'm okay, but I'm sorry that my writing has also taken an impact because of it.
I have written the last chapter, but I will not publish it until I finish writing the first chapter of my new story so hopefully you can all check it out!
I hope you liked it.
