Chapter Five

Well, my life is pretty much officially done. I’m being a bit overdramatic, but in a time of crisis, one has to be a drama queen.

Currently, I’m sulking on Lina’s new bed, dressed in Lina’s ugliest (but most comfortable) mismatched pajama set, hugging the pillow I’m pretty sure she stole from my house when she moved out, and sobbing. The doorbell rings, and I, being the friend I am, just continue sobbing loudly into the squishy pillow and refusing to answer the door so as not to accidentally pose as the new girl that just moved in next door. The doorbell rings again, this time persistently and constantly. The doorbell-ringer gives up and starts pounding on the front door so hard I think it might break down.

I stand up, still hugging the pillow and rifle through her dresser drawers, throw on more appropriate pajamas and her favorite moccasin/slipper thingies that were fuzzy on the inside, then walk to the bathroom and splash cold water on my face until the redness under my eyes are almost gone. The puffiness is still there, but I can deal with that later.

“Lina! Open the door, now!” a voice growl-shouts from outside the front door as I walk up to it. “We need to talk!”

Oh, boy. This doesn’t sound good. What kind of trouble has she have gotten herself into already? She’s only lived here for a week! I told her she should’ve moved into a safer neighborhood…

I back away from the door, hugging my pillow. I eye the front closet warily, wondering if she keeps anything weapon-like in there. I open the door and peer inside, finding a wooden baseball bat.

‘This should do it,’ I think to myself, grabbing the bat and swinging it once. Good and solid.

I hoist it over my shoulder, unlock the door and open it slowly, but then whoever is behind the door decides to shove it open, I decide to swing the bat as hard as I can. I narrowly miss the head of the enemy.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa! Watch it!” he yells.

I pull the bat over my shoulder to take another swing, but then I recognize the face of the intruder. “What the fuck?” I spit out, not letting go of the bat. I hold it higher like I was taught in softball.

“Who are you?” he asks, confused.

“Why the hell are you in my best friend’s house!” I shout at Liam.

“I asked first!”

“I asked second!”

“Stop it!” a familiar voice shouts.

Shit.

I drop the bat and run for the safety of the bathroom, slamming and locking the door behind me.

“Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck,” I repeat quietly, pacing the floor of the small bathroom. I slide down the wall, sitting on the tiled floor and holding my head in my hands. I stand up and brace myself on the sink, locking my elbows and staring at the drain. I look up at my pale reflection in the mirror, wondering how I got to this point in less than twenty-four hours.

First, Harry on a date with Lina, and now, Liam and Harry show up at her house? What the fuck? How does she know One Direction?

I hear a car door slam shut, and a few seconds later I hear Lina.

“Liam, what are you doing here?” I hear her ask. She sounds just as confused as I was, so when she starts to yell, I jump. “What the fuck is he doing here? Why the hell didn’t you call me before you brought him over to my house?! You know, maybe a ‘Hey, Lina! I’m going to show up at your house unexpectedly with a person you obviously don’t like and not tell you at all!’ You’re supposed to be my brother; a normal brother would call!” she shouts.

Brother?!

“Besides, we only met five days ago. You can’t just come over to my house uninvited. Just because we’re blood doesn’t mean we’re family!”

“Jeez, Lina! I just need to talk to you about Harry!”

I unlock the bathroom door and pad down the hallway, hugging the pillow.

That douchebag? The one that broke my best mate’s heart?! I don’t want to even see him right now. Get him out of my house!”

“Whoa, guys. What’s going on here?”

Shit. There’s more?! She knows all of them?!

“Lina?” I say quietly. Five heads turn in my direction.

All in one direction.

Ha.

That’s not funny.

“Katy,” she says, walking toward me.

I back away from her and she stops, looking hurt.

“You have a lot of explaining to do,” I say. I try to stay calm, but my anger gets the best of me, and I start to shout. “Liam’s your fucking brother? What the hell, Lina? Whatever happened to telling each other everything? I thought that’s what best friends did!”

“I’ve barely had time to process it myself! I was going to tell you after my date but thatdidn’t work out.”

“You could’ve told me after we left!”

“I was going to tell you but I was just so pissed off about Harry and… and you!” she shouts back.

I blanch, but recover quickly. “Me?! Why the hell were you pissed at me?”

“Well, for starters you never told me about that stupid locket of yours. If I had known, this could have been avoided altogether. Instead, I went on a date with my best friend’s douchebag of an ex-boyfriend!”

“Oh, right! It all comes down to my locket?! Jesus Christ, Lina! It’s the one thing I never told you the full story of and that’s why you’re blaming me for this whole situation? You’re the one with the secret brother!”

“You still have the locket?” Harry’s shocked voice comes from somewhere to my left.

“Shut up, Harry!” both Lina and I shout at the same time, not taking our eyes off each other.

“Katy, you of all people should know I was going to tell you!” Lina says, not shouting any more.

“And I told you all that I was willing to tell you about my locket! Why couldn’t you just accept that, Lina?” I say, an angry tear rolling down my left cheek. I wipe it away, hating the tickle of the water as it treks down my face.

“No, you didn’t! You refused to tell me about the locket up until I was on a date with the dick that gave it to you. I had to rip it from your neck to figure it all out!”

“Just because it wasn’t the whole story doesn’t mean it wasn’t enough. Just because you wanted the whole story doesn’t mean I was willing to give you the whole thing,” I say, my voice low and full of anger. “You never even told me who he was. This isn’t completely my fault, Lina. Don’t try to blame this all on me.”

Just then, Louis fucking Tomlinson walks in. “Hey, Lina! Did you know that your front door is wide open?” He sees Lina and I and blanches. “Whoa. What’s going on in here?”

“I think we need to give them a minute. Everyone outside. Now,” Liam says, ushering everyone outside and closing the door behind him.

“You’re right. I shouldn’t be forcing you to say things you don’t want to say. I should have told you about Harry.”

“Damn right you should have! I asked you like, three times what his name was!”

“Well how was I supposed to know if you were going to freak out or that he’s your freaking ex?”

“Well, for one, you should’ve at least told me his name. We could have made the connection then!” I shout, beginning to lose my patience.

“You’ve already said that! What’s your point?”

“My point is that you should’ve told me! That’s the only question I needed answered and it was the only one left unanswered.”

“Well I have a right to not tell you things, just like you and your locket,” she says matter-of-factly, flipping her hair over her shoulder.

“I wasn’t ready to tell you about my locket! You’re being so overdramatic about all this! Why can’t you just accept my answer? I didn’t think my locket was that important to you! Harry was a huge part of my life and I didn’t want to tell you about it! All I wanted was a name. You wanted a story that would’ve broken me all over again. You wouldn’t have believed me if I said I dated pre-famous Harry Styles even if I showed you the pictures in my locket. You know my photoshopping skills and would’ve assumed that’s what was done!”

“You obviously don’t know me then,” she tells me quietly. “I’m your best friend, Katy. I never doubt anything you say; I never have and never will, regardless of the extremes and your wicked Photoshop skills. I can’t believe you’d think that.” She sounds slightly hurt.

“I just can’t believe you didn’t tell me about your brother. I mean I feel like that’d at least deserve an immediate call. And even if you weren’t ready to tell me he’s your brother, you should’ve told me you met famous people!” I say. “Why didn’t you?”

“I don’t know,” she says, looking down. “I’m sorry, Katy.”

“Me, too. I’m sorry. I just wish you had told me before I had to find out the hard way.”

“So.... ice cream?”

“Ice cream,” I agree. “You got the whipped cream and the chocolate, right?”

“Like I could ever forget? I’d never hear the end of it if I forgot it.”

Halfway through the movie, Lina jerks upright. “Shit! We forgot about the boys!”

I sink further into my corner of the couch. “They can stay outside.”

She stares at me, scolding. “Katy, that’s not nice. I’m going to invite them in and then we are all going to sit down and have a cup of tea. We can just ignore Harry.”

“Lina,” I say mockingly.

“That’s not nice.” She frowns at me as she gets up from the couch. She stuffs her feet in her slippers and walks outside. I eat another spoonful of my ice cream. A moment later, Lina comes back in alone.

“Where are the idiots you invited in?” I ask, taking another bite of ice cream, making anom-nom-nom noise as I eat.

“Hosing off in the backyard,” she explains, walking into the bathroom and coming out with towels. “They found a mud puddle.”

I pause the movie and walk into the kitchen to get more ice cream. Moments later, five men tumble into the small entryway, sopping wet and wrapped in towels and wet clothing. I internally laugh at their droopy state, my snarky side getting the better of me, and enjoy their misfortune, even if they are my idols.

“You lads know where the loo is,” she addresses, pointing into the hallway. They all shuffle dejectedly into the small bathroom while Lina takes clean towels out of the linen closet in the hallway. “Take a hot shower, but fast ones. I don’t care if you all shower together. But if my bathroom is a wreck next time I use it, none of you are allowed back in my home.”

Niall looks back, stares at me for a long moment, and then he, too, shuffles into the cramped bathroom and closes the door. “What are they going to do about clothes?” I ask when she flops back on her end of the couch.

“Not my problem,” she says, pressing play.

Turns out, the boys have a backup plan for clothes. All. The time. Ten minutes after they get out of the shower, a van shows up with a box full of brand new clothes in their exact sizes, even thought they could’ve just gone next door and all worn Louis’ clothes. Now that I think of it, they could’ve just cleaned up there, but it’s whatever honestly so they dump their wet clothes in the washing machine and dress in their new clothes.

Then, they sit on the floor and drink the tea that Lina had begged me to make. Harry is sitting by himself in the corner, as far away from Lina as he can get without leaving the room. For the most part he keeps his eyes on his phone, but I occasionally catch him staring at me. Liam is talking in hushed tones with Lina in the hallway. I can occasionally hear a stage-whisper volume comment, but I don’t listen too closely.

“Katy!” Louis says loudly from his spot on the loveseat where Lina had previously sat.

“Hm?” I turn away from the movie and look at him. Niall is looking at me intently from his spot next to Louis.

“I asked if you were a fan,” Niall tells me. I can tell that he’s trying to be discreet, but I see Harry slightly turn his head so he can hear my answer better.

“Uh...” I pause, debating whether or not to tell of my fangirl-ish ways without making it seem like I only listen to them to keep tabs on my ex-boyfriend. “A little. I had some friends who were obsessed with you guys, so I was kinda forced into it.”

Niall nods as if he understands. It’s a lie, so he doesn’t, but I’m not about to tell him that. Louis looks like he’s about to say something else, but I stand up before he can speak.

“If you’ll excuse me for a minute…” I get up and walk through the hallway, grabbing Lina’s arm and dragging her behind me. “I need to talk to you,” I tell her through my teeth. I pull her into her bedroom and close the door.

“What? I was talking to Liam!”

I ignore her. “You need to come watch the movie again. Niall keeps staring at me and you can literally feel the awkward.”

Notes

Did anybody catch that "Supernatural" reference? I did. Mostly because I wrote it, but when we were revising the fight I made sure we kept that line in. It's my favorite so far.

SUPER sorry that I didn't update sooner. I finally got around to starting to finish the chapter on Thursday and still didn't finish until Friday. Since we decided that it wouldn't be enough time to write the next chapter and post this early and the next on the day it was supposed to, we decided to juggle the schedule a bit. The next chapter WILL be out on Saturday. Promise. It's the more organized author writing this next one.

And since I'm grounded (from driving, not the computer obvi), I'll have a shitload of time to write.

I really can't think of any questions for this chapter....
Uh....
Harsh words were exchanged between Lina and Liam. One quote in particular. Guess which one I'm talking about.
What kind of tea did Katy make?
Why does my little sister's pink nail polish refuse to come off my toes?
