To make us forge a plan

As I walked out the dreadful building I dragged Niall behind me. I was panicking, bad. We practically ran to his car, since mine had been taken from me since I kind of quit. Without saying a word we both got in, me driving, and we drove to Niall’s place. I had all my essentials in the one bag I had brought there and he could easily pack some more. I quickly told him to pack the most important stuff and that we probably could some back for the rest. He knew as much as me that that was a lie. We wouldn't be able to come back for a long time, but Niall had willingly taken that chance for me. I still didn't understand why he kept on sticking up for me but now it was too late to turn back.

When we packed I jumped at every sound. I froze when I heard him open a door and when we finally walked outside I suspected every car in the surrounding area. I had never before doubted Simons word but somehow this felt like one big lie. He had never been threatened like this before, no one had told him that his secret would come out. No one had told him that his back-up plan would turn to mush. And this was what I had told him, not so much in words but in actions. I had always known he was one scary dude, but I had never had a real reason to fear him before. Yes I was afraid that I would never see my little girl again, but I was always comforted by the fact that he one day would want her in the company. Although it truly broke my heart that the first six years of her life had been taken from me. And from her. She needed a mother, but Simon saw her as a distraction and nothing more.

We kept on driving. Somewhere down the road I began thinking this all was a terrible idea. I didn't know where I was going, I had absolutely no clue as to where my baby was. Simon wasn’t going to make this easy, but he liked to play games. For as long as I’ve known him he had been playing games with me. And even though he pretends to be a heartless son of a bitch I know that he deep down is the devil himself. I had to figure everything out. Get my mind together and plan. But first I needed to get us to a safe house.

---------

“I haven’t asked you where we’re going because I can see that you’re trying to figure this all out, but I need to know something.” I slowly bit my lip as Niall spoke his first words since we left Simons office. I was trying to ignore him, but he wasn’t having it. “You need to realize that I’m not going anywhere. And for once I’m staying out of your head.” I felt his steady gaze on me as I looked onto the road. “So please tell me something.” He said the last word carefully and then stayed silent. I knew I had to tell him, but it was hard to grasp the situation.

“I’m taking us to a close friend of mine.” I didn’t mean to give him so little information, but it just wouldn’t come out.

“Won’t Simon know where that friend is?” As I slowly shook my head a sad smile appeared on my lips. Simon had never known about Frida. Right from the start I had known there was something wrong with him, so I kept what was most sacred to me hidden from him.

“He doesn’t know about her.” He nodded his head and fell back against his seat. After twenty minutes of silence he spoke.

“When do we get there?” I quickly glanced at the time and did the math. We were about four hours away.

“Around six.” I didn’t need to say anything else. He understood. I was thankful that he didn’t ask me about where she lived. Even though I did trust him. But I couldn’t get the risk that we might get caught again out of my head. So he stayed silent and I did too. During the rest of our journey we only spoke when it was needed. So the hours flew by slowly. And by the time we got to her house it felt weird to speak.

I parked the car outside her house. Frida was a year older than me and had married last year. She and her husband moved into a grand house they bought together. I knew for a fact that they were happy. That they were head over heels in love. He was a normal guy, working for a construction company, and she was a normal girl who worked for a small law firm.

As I glanced up at the house I hesitated. I knew I was going to get into a lot of trouble for coming here, unannounced. She would probably yell at me for not calling before, so that she would’ve had a chance to clean up. The fond memories made me smile.

“Well, if that’s all she’s going to do then what are you waiting for?” I looked at Niall with a warm smile and gently grabbed his hand. His hand felt so strangely warm against mine. He made me feel so alive. My gaze lifted slowly from our hands and when I looked him in the eyes I slowly started to lean forward. No matter how mad I was at him for actually coming with me, I was relieved and glad that he did. He was safer here with me. When our lips met it wasn’t that raw passion that we had felt before. And it wasn’t that rage filled kiss either. It was one of affection and care. When we broke apart it took me a minute to remember what we were doing.

“Oh right.” I fixed my clothes as I sat up straight. As I looked over to her house once more and noticed the lights on, I spoke a quick sentence to Niall. “And by the way, she hates vampires.” I quickly got out of the car and grabbed my one bag. When I was halfway to the house Niall emerged next to me.

“Throwing me to the wolves huh?” I laughed at his statement and nodded my head. But my laughter quickly died out when I realized we were at their door. I held my breath and looked at the white piece of wood in front of me.

“I don’t like this.” Niall nodded his head and put his arm around me.

“I’m here.” He lightly kissed my cheek.

“I just don’t like to ask for help.” I sighed and knocked on the door. Niall hugged me close and then let me go. I had to admit that I instantly missed his touch, but I didn’t get time to think about that before Frida opened the door. She looked at me a little confused at first, but after the two seconds that it took her to recognize me she smiled largely. Her arms were thrown around my neck and she squeezed me so tight that I couldn’t breathe. When she finally let me go she leaned back but left her hands on my shoulders.

“God, it’s been forever man.” I grinned at her use of slang and nodded.

“You know how it is.” Her eyes were coated with a dark shadow when I said that. She remembered why I hadn’t been around.

“Who are you?” She looked up at Niall and raised her chin. I knew she hated the fact that he was taller than her, even though it wasn’t by much. Even my gut could feel that she already knew he was a vampire.

“I’m Niall.” He reached out his hand towards her but she simply shook her head. She was a firm believer that if you shook another person’s hand, that meant you accepted them. And since she didn’t like vampires, she couldn’t shake Niall’s hand. Frida had always been a complicated figure.

“Why did you bring it?” She motioned with her head towards Niall but kept her steady gaze on me.

“Because he is important to me.” For a few seconds she looked shocked but recovered quickly. Her eyes moved to look behind me and then she motioned us inside.

“Come in.” When the door was closed she turned to me and I could see a little worry in her eyes. “Geo-.. Nick. Why are you here?” She paused and grabbed my hands. As she did so her husband walked into the hallway. Casper noticed the frightened look in his wife’s eyes and instantly went to stand by her side.

“It’s a long story.” I glanced at Niall and when I looked back at Frida I saw understanding in her eyes. “I was planning on leaving, just like we talked about so many times.” I took a deep breath and felt Niall’s arm snake around my waist. My body instantly relaxed and I felt a little safer. “To make a long story short, shit hit the fan and Si’s on a killing mission.” I tried to laugh but it only earned a pitiful smile from my best friend.

“Should we go to the living room? It’s must’ve been a long ride for you two.” Casper spoke up and for the second time I looked at him.

“Yeah that would be nice.” I smiled and reached my hand towards him. “It’s nice to finally meet you Casp.” He nodded his head and shook my hand.

“I agree. It’s nice to have a face to the name and voice.” I smiled and as he let go off my hand I felt Niall move just slightly. This time he didn’t reach his hand out towards Casper. He must’ve thought that Frida and Casper thought alike. “And what was your name? I must admit your face seems rather familiar.” Casp smiled and Niall relaxed his body. They shook hands and I noticed Frida bit the inside of her cheek.

“I’m Niall. Casper was it?” Casp nodded his head and they let each other go. “Nice to meet you. Both.” When he added both he looked at Frida. Her eyes shifted so she was looking at me, and she didn’t look happy.

“Let’s go sit down.” She tried to sound nice, but all she managed was impatient. Niall and I followed the couple into their house. It was a really nice little villa with all the necessary things to raise a family. I knew they were trying really hard. As we sat down everyone in the room turned to look at me. I didn’t know what their eyes said, but when I looked at Niall I knew I had to ask what I really came here to ask.

“We need a place to stay.” Frida opened her mouth but I quickly interrupted her. “It’s only for a night or two. I need to figure out where to go next.” She slowly nodded her head. Silence filled the room and when it was broken, it wasn’t Frida that had spoken up.

“You are both welcomed to stay for as long as you need.” Casp looked down at his surprised wife. “And if you need any help, please..” He paused and looked up at Niall and me. “Don’t hesitate to ask us. We will do anything in our power to help our friends.” He considered Niall a friend. Well… This was a better outcome than I thought was possible. Thank God.
