Niall and I decided not to continue speaking about my mother. He had stuff to take care off and I had an escape plan to coordinate. I needed to leave now that he was ‘cured’. I understood that he wanted to come with me, but that would be bad for both him and myself. I had to admit that I had feelings for him and he told me he had feelings for me to. But somehow I felt it in my bones that it would only be a disaster. What Katy had told me made me realize that I too had feelings for him, but that didn’t change anything.

I had almost forgotten about Katy as I walked out into the living room. She was sitting on the couch with a smug smile on her annoyingly perfect lips. I realized she may have heard everything but before I could ask her she laughed a cute laugh and spoke.

“I left as soon as I got a hint on where your conversation was going.” My cheeks turned deep red and when she turned to look at me she looked really happy. “Stayed far enough away to only know when it was safe to come back.” I nodded and sat down next to her.

“So you know everything?” She sighed slowly and nodded. She still looked happy, about what I couldn’t imagine, but her face showed a little guilt.

“I’ve known for a while.” I nodded and closed my eyes. Of course she had known for a while. She was the mind reader of mind readers. If there was anyone who would know anything before anyone else, it was her. “I couldn’t tell you.” I smiled and opened my eyes to look at her.

“I know.” My easiness with the subject shocked both Katy and myself. Just moments ago I had lashed out on Niall because he knew, and here I was taking it easy with Katy. “I guess it’s not really a secret if everyone knows about it.” She laughed a little and nodded her head. Her now brown hair bounced a little and it made me jealous. Even though I sometimes had perfect hair, hers always beat mine by miles.

“Simon doesn’t know that you know. Or that Niall knows as much as he does.” I looked at her shocked and she smiled victoriously. “Even Simon has his limits.” I laughed out loud to that one.

“It’s hard to remember that sometimes.” She laughed and stood up from the couch. “Where are you going?” I looked at her with a content smile on my lips. Even though I knew my life would get just a little bit more complicating in the next few days, I was happy right now.

“I’m leaving. I can hear your thoughts about leaving, and I don’t want to know where you’re going. So I’m going to say goodbye now.” I stood up and hugged her tightly to me. “You know how to find me if you need me.” I nodded and as soon as I let her go she was gone. She was only here for a short period of time but she was one of my best friends.

I walked down the driveway towards the car. Simon had called me and asked me to come into the office. I of course said that I would and he insisted that he would send a car. No matter how much I tried to convince him not to, he still did so. So as I sat down in the backseat of the black car I was reminded that Simon really was my boss. He could tell me what to do, when to do it, and I would have to agree. I hated not having my own life and that’s why I was getting out. I had the feeling what he would say to me. By now the news about Nialls returning emotions would have reached him, and he was calling me into his office to make me stay. Oh but how foolish did he think I was? No matter what words he was going to use, no matter what he was going to say my plans were already made.

I walked through those regular doors that I had walked out of just a few days ago. This time it felt different. It felt like the people who I met in the hallways knew I was leaving. They all said hello, just like before. But their looks were different, they were looking at me with pity and a little hope. As I approached Simon’s assistant she looked up at me with a glum expression. She motioned for me to sit down, which I found strange because I would normally just walk in. I sat down as I was asked to do and then I waited. After about ten minutes the door to his office opened and Niall walked out. He looked sad, and slightly confused.

I had to strain myself from getting up and going to him. When I noticed that someone had walked out behind him I once more had to stop myself from getting up and slapping the shit out of the person. Behind him stood the one and only Russell Brand. See, there was a reason Katy and he got along so great. They both were super mind readers, which meant they couldn’t read each other’s minds. But he had cheated on her, so she left. He was through and through a bad person. And he had devoted his life to making Katy’s life, and my own life, into a miserable hell.

Now that bloody coward was here. And I knew it only meant trouble for me. As I just implied he didn’t like me, at all. I had helped Katy leave him and he was convinced it was my entire fault. As I slowly stood up Russell looked over at me and smiled. He was looking at me kindly, he had a wicked smile on his lips. Cursing within I walked towards Simons door. Just as I was about to walk into his office the leach spoke up.

“I hope I haven’t ruined any plans of yours Nicky.” I bit my tongue and kept my back to him. “It would be a shame to see you suffer as an office rat. Such a shame.” He shook his head and laughed a little. I stayed perfectly still just outside Simon’s door and felt Russell move away. He walked down the hall and when he was in the elevator I relaxed my body. That man made me uneasy, and I didn’t like. Soon after I had relaxed I felt Niall’s hand on my shoulder.

“I’m so sorry Nick.” I nodded my head slowly and shook his hand off me. I walked into the office in front of me without saying a word to Niall. I knew he didn’t mean to spill the beans, but it had been done. And now I was going to feel the wrath of Simon.

“Close the door Nick.” I did as he asked and sat down on the chair in front of his desk. “Could you make sure they don’t hear?” I nodded my head, feeling dirty and ashamed for some odd reason. I waited for him to speak. “You must understand why I had to call in Brand.” I took a deep breath and slowly looked up at him. I was mad, because he was doing everything in his power to make me not leave.

“Still was a low blow though.” He nodded his stupid head and quickly looked towards the door. When he looked back at me he had a strange look in his eyes.

“You weren’t telling me anything.” I bit the inside of my lip to stop myself from overreacting to his words.

“It’s not in your place to know.” I shrugged and stared at him. He could see the pure hatred in my eyes. He recoiled a little and took a deep breath.

“Georgie, I’m the one who have put you in this position. I don’t see how it’s not my place to know.” I felt myself ball my hand into a fist. He said such stupid things.

“Maybe. But you are also the only one who can stop me.” I smiled but it never reached my eyes. “Well. Not stop. Maybe just hinder a little.” He didn’t smile. He didn’t laugh. But I saw in his eyes that he knew that what I had said was true.

“Do you know where you are going?” Was he prying or was he giving in?

“Honestly? No.” I decided to tell him the truth. I didn’t know where to begin, but I knew I had to begin.

“That’s a good start.” His tone was dry but I saw a hint of sarcasm in his eyes. “You’re not going to try to get the info from me?” I shook my head and leaned back in my seat.

“If you wanted me to know, you would’ve told me years ago.” He nodded and leaned back in his own chair.

“But as you know, I like a challenge.” I swallowed back the fear as past memories came up to the surface again. Simon only smiled, giving me the sign that told me he had read my mind.

“You promised to never read my mind.” His smile grew larger and as he leaned forward I tried to lean backwards.

“I also promised your mother to never inflict pain on you. Broke that promise after five years.” My eyes started to water and I wanted nothing more than to get out of there. “That boy is really in love with you.” I stayed perfectly still as Simon got up and walked around the table. “Would be a shame if something happened to you wouldn’t it?” His hand snaked around my neck and he forced me to look at him.

“Stop.” His hand tightened as Niall’s voice came from the doorway. Simon tscked his tongue as his hand roamed farther and farther down my neck and onto my chest.

“You really want to touch these, knowing where they’ve been?” He ran his hand over my left breast and Niall took a step forward. I couldn’t see but I could feel him.

“Get your hand off her.” Niall’s voice was fierce. He sounded really mad and determined to save the day.

“I’ll give you an hour to get away.” Simon spoke to me, but kept his hand on my breast. “After that, the chase begins.” He let me go. Quickly I stood up and walked over to Niall. “Oh, and Niall?” We both looked back at Simon with worried looks. “You better go with her, because you have no future staying here.” I gulped loudly and began dragging Niall out of there. Now I understood why everyone looked at me the way they did.

They knew he was going to kill me before his dark secret got out. He knew that if I got my hands on her, he would never see her again. And he needed her. With me gone he really needed her. Melody. My daughter.
