We're on Fire

nine: i don't want to be wasting my time alone.

I let out an irritated groan as I hear voices not too far off from where I was. I curse under my breath at the noise and try to go back to sleep. It was pretty damn early and right now, all I wanted was to sleep. I was tired and felt hung over from the long ass party last night. It lasted all night until the ass crack of dawn around like 3:30 or some shit from what I can remember. It’s all quiet for the next few minutes so I try to fall back into nice sleep.

It’s silent for a few minutes more before I hear voices speak up again. “M-Mornin’,” I hear around me speak and roll my eyes. As I lift my head up from where I was lying down, my head begins to pound immensely. I could hardly remember anything from the party last night but all I knew is that I drank too much. The voices continued to get louder and closer as I shut my eyes again and lay my head back down and try to block out the noises.

“Sorry if I startled ya, babe, and woke ya,” I hear Niall’s thick Irish accent as he talked to someone near me, I guess. Ashton? Hell if I knew.

“Shut the fuck up,” I mumble and roll over and groan as I bump into something, or someone, I think. A few minutes go by and I feel slight movement near where I was. As I sit up and open my eyes to the bright sun, I feel my fingertips brush up against Ashton’s arm as I notice her sitting a bit close to me on the couch. I let out a slight chuckle followed with a groan as she jumps at my sudden touch.

“Thanks for disrupting my sleep, babe,” I mumble in an irritated tone. I wasn’t one to mess with, especially in the mornings. Everyone, especially Liam, knows to steer clear of me whenever I’m drunk and tired as fuck, like this morning, for example. I hated mornings but cherished my sleep, what I could get of it, anyway.

She mutters a soft “sorry,” and moves a bit so I could sit up. I roll my eyes as I sit up and run a hand through my messy hair. It was too early, and I didn’t want to deal with people right now.

“Rude much?” Ashton replies back in an annoyed manner. I brush it off and don’t respond; all I do is let out a grunt as I stand up and stretch a bit before I slowly begin to make my way out of the room. I roll my eyes as I head for the kitchen so I could find some aspirin and water for my headache. Ashton hurries out the room, Niall ahead of her, and I slowly trail behind her.

I make my way over to the cabinet so I could find myself some aspirin, if they had any, even. I open the bottle and take one so I could take it with some water. After I grab a glass and fill it with water, I down the tablet and set it down on the counter. I decide to stand there for a minute or two and find myself staring over at Ashton, who sat at the bar, while Niall fixed her his hangover cure-all drink. I then begin to make my way over to the stools that sat in front of the island.

I take a seat on the empty stool that was besides the one being occupied by Ashton. I can’t help but stare at her as I sit there quietly. As I sit there and watch her, I can’t help but wonder what was floating around that head of hers. Her eyes were focused on the bottom hem of her dress as her fingers played with the end of it, as if she was in full concentration on something. As I stare at the beautiful girl who sat beside me, I can’t help but bite my lip and feel the slight tug of the metal in my lip.

A few minutes go by and she looks up, a confused yet surprised look on her face. My lips curve into a smirk as I look back at her, my eyes wide as I look at her. She jumps slightly when she realises I was staring. A chuckle leaves my mouth.

“What’s wrong, Ash?” I question, a hint of a smirk on my face as I look at her. She doesn’t respond right off like I thought she would, like she’s thinking of what to say. A look of anger flashes in her eyes and she groans.

“Don’t call me that,” she snaps in a harsh tone and crosses her arms over her chest. There was a hint of a scowl on her face and I couldn’t help but let out a faint laugh.

“Touchy, touchy,” I respond with a small smile and rise up from my spot on the stool. I go back over to the fridge so I could grab myself some water because I was a bit thirsty. I grab a fresh water bottle and grip onto it before I shut the door. Soon, I am back at my spot beside her at island bar thing.

“Here we go, love,” Niall sets the crimson colored drink on the counter. “Drink up,” he says with a smile. I could smell it from here, the stench strong and traveling up my nose. It wasn’t the worst but definitely did the trick, that’s for sure, plus it had a kick to it.

“Thanks,” she mumbles as she grips the large glass of the crimson colored hangover potion, in her small hands.

I take that moment to get up, again, and go over to where Niall stood, fixing himself some breakfast. The two of us strike up a bit of conversation to pass the next few minutes. Every so often, my eyes trail over to Ashton, who sat at the bar. She scrunches up her nose at the smell of the drink, and I can’t help but laugh at that. Niall and I chat for a few more minutes. The next time I look over to where Ashton sat, that’s when I notice she was gone.

Where the hell did she go? I think to myself as I look around. My eyes soon fixate on her as I realise she stood in front of the sink, the empty glass in hand. Her back was to me as she stood in front of the sink, her dark hair cascading down her back.

“I can do that for you, babe,” I blurt out in a deep tone. She jumps at the sound of my voice and I can’t help but laugh, yet again. I don’t know why I find it funny when she does that, I just do.

“No, I got it,” she responds, slight annoyance evident in her voice. “Don’t need your help,” she mumbles.

It takes her a few minutes before she gets it as clean as she could and sets it beside the sink. She then takes that moment to walk out of the room, her phone in hand. I stand there alone to my thoughts. What the hell is she doing to me? This girl, Ashton, who I just barely met yesterday is all I could think about. I have no idea what the hell she is doing to me. I’ve never been the type to fall quick for someone, not after her.

I didn’t want to think about her. God, that was another story for a different day and I didn’t want to deal with that right now. The only thing – right now, on my mind – was Ashton, and I didn’t mind, at all. I am pulled from my thoughts when I hear her let out a groan of annoyance. I slowly make my way to the doorway to see what was going on.

“Something wrong, love?” I ask as she looks over at me.

“It’s fine,” she responds in a snippy tone and rolls her eyes. “Just peachy,” she mutters.

“Tried calling Liam but he’s not pickin’ up. Guess that means I have to walk back with you,” she mumbles and I notice her begin to make her way toward the front door. She stops and turns to look back at me, her arms crossed over her chest.

“Won’t be so bad, keep each other company that way,” I say as I make my way over to where she stood. She doesn’t say anything in response, only nods her head before she goes and steps out the door, shutting it softly behind her. I call out to Niall and tell him I’ll see him later. I pull the door open and step outside, my heavy boots hitting the pavement. After I step out onto the porch, I shut the door with a loud slam.

“Surprised to see you actually waited, thought you would’ve left by now,” I tell her as I walk over to where she stood. She gives a small nod of her head, eyes fixed on her feet.

“Well I didn’t,” she mutters and begins to walk down the driveway to the sidewalk in front of the house. I begin to make my way over to her. “Kind of don’t remember how to get back to the house, anyways,” she mentions and glances up to find me beside her.

“Ah,” I reply. “Glad to be walking with you, babe, make sure you don’t get lost, yeah?” I question and stuff my hands in the pockets of my jeans.

“Suppose so,” she mumbles. I just nod my head to her remark.

The two of us talk amongst ourselves as we begin to walk back to my house. Every so often, I couldn’t help but ask her things about herself. I was just curious and wanted to know more about her life. She was quiet and slow with her replies as if she didn’t want to answer them. For whatever reason, I wasn’t quite sure why, but I wanted to find out, and I intend on doing just that.

In return of me asking her questions, she asked me a few. I told her where I worked, at the nearest bar that was in town somewhat close to campus and a little ways from the house. We continue to chat for the next few minutes as we walk down the street. The next time I look up, I realise that we were in front of the house. It was a good fifteen minute walk or so, I think, but I wasn’t paying attention.

Ashton lets out a tired sigh from her lips as she slowly comes up the steps that led to the front door. “Everything alright, Ash?” I ask as I look back at her as I turn around to see her on the second to bottom step, trying to catch her breath.

“Just tired, is all, have a lot to do, get ready for orientation tomorrow and classes in a few days,” she says and lets out a tired sigh. I hear her on the tired part, I was quite tired and wanted to sleep before I had to go to work later, but that wasn’t until this evening. As much as I didn’t want to go, I had to, because I got paid a pretty decent amount, and needed it as long as I lived here or I’ll be out on the fucking streets homeless.

“May go pass out until I have to go to work later,” I mutter as I stand there and watch her slowly make her way up the steps, hands clutching the railing. I smile a bit and let a laugh under my breath. I stand there for a minute before I reach out my hand to help her and make it easier for her. She mumbles a ‘thanks’ and I reply back with a “welcome” before I turn to face the door.

I reach for the door handle and turn the handle only for it to be locked. Of fucking course! I think to myself and realise I don’t have my key. Where is my damn key anyway? I roll my eyes and knock on the door.

“Liam! Open the door, mate! It’s fucking locked!” I yell and cross my arms over my chest. I roll my eyes and let out a frustrated sigh from my lips.

“I’m sure he’ll come, Harry,” Ashton says quietly. “Be patient,” she mutters and shakes her head at me, a small smile on her face. I don’t respond, only roll my eyes again. I’ve always hated when people tell me to be patient, I fucking hate it. It would only make things worse if I opened my mouth and said something I’ll regret later, because the last thing I want is to get Ashton mad at me, and we hardly even know each other…yet.

A few minutes go by as we stand there. I decide to knock on the door again, this time; I bang the door a bit harder as my fist collided with the wooden door. As I was just about to knock again, the door swings open in a quick motion.

“Look who’s finally up,” I mumble as the door opens and I find Liam standing there, rubbing his eyes with his hand. “Thanks for finally letting us in, asshole,” I mutter in an annoyed tone.

“Morning to you, too, Styles,” he says with a tired looking smile and pushes the door open so Ashton and I could walk inside. I let Ashton walk inside first and help her by putting an arm on her back to steady her a bit.

“Thanks,” she mumbles and slowly walks inside. After what seemed like hours, I walk inside and slam the door shut behind me.

“Ash, you sure you’re okay?” Liam asks as he looks at the girl who stood next to me. I find myself staring at her and Liam. He had one of his arms around her shoulder, a friendly gesture, and the two were going on about something. Her hair was a mess, dress slightly crooked but still looked decent enough on her, eyes still just as bright as they were when I first met her, and it’s only her first full day here.

“Well, carry on, I’m going to go… and sleep,” I say a bit loudly.

Liam and Ashton look up at me for a second before I begin my way up the stairs to my room. My mind can’t seem to shake off Ashton. Why is she taking over my thoughts and why can’t I seem to get her off my mind? I plan on getting to know her more because she’s beautiful and I can’t get enough. That’s what I plan on doing, but I don’t want to mess things up, which is something I always end up doing in the end. I slam the door shut once I get into my room. The room was dark, thanks to my curtains that shielded the sunlight from coming into my room, which was perfect condition for sleeping. I am soon out to the world as I fall asleep on my too comfortable bed, thoughts and images of Ashton flowing through my mind.
